I was watching that 2000 WCF game 7 where we had that awesome/ridiculous 15 pt deficit comeback in the fourth and noticed something: the fans were way more animated then than they are now.

So what do you guys think: is it possible that the "Lights Out" does not allow fans to see each other and react in a group manner?

The Lakers have had many, energetic, exciting finishes and comebacks since the inception of "Lights Out". Getting rid of it is not going to have a positive effect on increasing their likelihood.

I'm up for that.

I also think Staples Center's biggest mistake was designing it for the rich people.

They should have thought of the fans(real ones) first, then the rich people.

Nothing wrong with catering with the rich fans, but when push comes to shove this is still a basketball arena.

I know we as fans at Staples get flack for their lack of enthusiam, but the place itself doesn't help. It's like a huge cavern too. The 300's are really high up and for whatever reason, the cheering doesn't get down nearly as much as I'd like.

Bye.

Hmmmmm, so fans were really animated during perhaps the most exciting quarter of basketball in Laker history. Shocking.

I've been a season ticket holder for 25 years, and the entire time people have been giving Laker fans grief for supposedly not being loud enough, whereas my experience actually being there is that we're plenty loud, plenty animated, etc. We will be tonight as well.

No I doubt it's him, the insider who posts at CL actually has the username - 'gumbygld'. He's actually Drew's agent, David Lee. He hasn't posted since the talks of Bynum's extension.

Would be cool if I had that kind of inside track to Bynum though!

I hated when they went to Lights Out at Staples and I hope they change back some day. I think is very inviting to the visiting team having the lights out because they can focus so much on the court and is not intimidating when seeing the fans.

maybe it's just me, but on TV, the crowd seems dead. But on the radio, i can barely hear Spero and Mychal at times.

sounds like youre not a regular at the games or new to team

the lakers crowd has always been like that, the lights out has nothing to do with it....were too cool to act the fool and scream at everything, were too spoiled

I will say that the majority of the good seats are just flat out unaffordable. seems like most of them are bought up by movie studios an given out to people that will pimp their most recent work. Did anyone see that chick from some show called the Closer? that chick had great seats and didnt have a clue about the team.

the lights out started as a test about 2 years ago. after the test game the lakers sent a survey to the season ticket holders. most of us liked the look so the lakers kept it.

No, I'm not a regular. I just go by what I watch on TV. Every arena at this stage in the playoffs is animated and ready to go 30 minutes before tip-off. But Staples, the Place is empty until maybe the end of the first quarter.

Refs just seemed easily influenced by big crowds. The fact that we don't seem to have one gives us a disadvantage.

No. What's shocking to me is what I see from TV. I mean, last night for example, people were hyped throughout the game. In Denver, same thing. In Cleveland same thing. Here? It's as if Phil Jackson is doing his post-game interview and all the reporters are falling asleep. If you've been going for 25 years, you must honestly see that the crowds were different in the forum than at Staples. Really, when since 2000 have the crowds been animated? Not even in 2001 or 2002. They were, but not to the level where you get goosebumps. That's what I mean, I don't get goosebumps off the energy from the crowd. May be loud, but it's just noise, not playoff energy goosebump noise.

They should implement a real "lights out." If any fan is texting or not cheering, someone comes and gives them a "lights out" punch to the face.

Of course, the payroll wouldn't be able to get anywhere near where it is right now, much less where it's likely to go next season.

And no, the status of the lights would not change anything.

I feel reasonably safe in saying that a good portion of the fans at Staples are old enough that they no longer associate dark with quiet time or nap time.

It's not that dark. It's definitely not so dark that the "visitors don't see the fans aren't as intimidated".

Lights out is great. IF anything it focuses the fans attention of the court.
