Unless he just goes into a giant tailspin, yeah. Heyward resumed baseball activities today, swinging a bat and running. Supposedly he could progress to sim games next week, and that would be followed by a rehab assignment. So if there are no setbacks, we could be looking at his return in about 17-21 days. Given that Outman is struggling, unless he gets white-hot really quickly, I'd have to assume that Heyward immediately gets his starting gig back, and at that point I have to think that Outman gets sent down to AAA.

As for Lux, he still has about 70 AB's to hit that 150 AB threshold that the Dodgers talked about before. He's been sitting against all lefties so he's ridden the pine in a few games lately. He's been a bit better, at least, in the last 2 weeks, hitting .260, but he only has 23 AB's over that span and his 6 hits have gone for a measly 7 total bases. He's just not driving the ball at all. If Lux does get sent down later this month or in early June, let's say, I'd guess that the internal plan would be to just go with Rojas in his place, figuring that he probably won't hit any worse than what Lux has shown, plus you improve the infield defense. Interestingly, and I'm not sure if anyone has pointed this out (forgive me if so), but in the last few games where Rojas has started over Lux with a lefty going, Mookie has stayed at SS with Rojas playing 2B. It seems like Mookie is playing the position fine and that they don't want to move him back and forth anymore. Baseball Reference has Mookie at 0.7 dWAR already, and Fangraphs has him at his best UZR/150 ever, including any of his Gold Glove years in the outfield. That's really something. Mookie being a good defensive SS is an absolute game-changer for the Dodgers, and it likely means that we won't be in the market for another SS like Willie Adames, unless, I suppose, that player could play second base for the rest of the season. Hey, Trea Turner did that for us alongside Seager, so I suppose you can't rule it out.

Not used to seeing a clutch at-bat like that in extra innings especially when the hitter has 2 strikes on him.

So that’s what a win in extra innings feels like.

In the spirit of my previous post, instead of SS's, now here is a look at some second baseman that I think could be made available by their clubs, with Arraez now off the board.

--Luis Rengifo, Angels: They are extremely likely to be clearly out of the race as soon as next month, and Rengifo has one more arb year in '25 before he hits free agency. He usually starts seasons slowly until the weather warms up in the summer, but this year he's off to a .330 start. A switch-hitter who traditionally murders lefties, 2024 is no exception as he's hitting .474 against southpaws so far. This could be the time they cash out on him, and keep in mind that the Dodgers thought they had traded for him once before.

--Brandon Drury, Angels: He's more of a lefty-masher and isn't good defensively, but he's a pretty good bat and as an expiring, wouldn't cost a ton to acquire, in all likelihood.

--Jonathan India, Reds: Matt McLain may not be back until August at the earliest, but India has not gotten off to a great start and I could still see the Reds trying to move him before the deadline, even though he's signed through 2025 and would have an arb year remaining in '26 before he reaches free agency. (He seems like the odd man out when all of their infielders are healthy.) He gets on base and his approach is something this organization would likely embrace.

--Tommy Edman, Cardinals: He should be be back later this month after a wrist injury. The team has younger second baseman in Nolan Gorman and Brendan Donovan, and although Edman's infield/outfield versatility could be appreciated by St. Louis (and certainly would be by us too), he becomes a free agent after next season, and if the club continues to spiral after last year's malaise, I could see them trying to move him if he comes back and shows he's healthy and playing reasonably well.

Yeah bittersweet win now knowing the Padres picked up the reigning batting champ for peanuts when they don't even have room for that dude I'm their crowded infield.

The leading prospect they got, outfielder Dillon Head, is only 19 but was a 1st Round pick in the most recent MLB draft in 2023, drafted #25 overall. So I don't know that I'd call it "peanuts"; it's a forward-thinking move, as the main piece won't be MLB ready for a while. I don't see him on mlb.com's top 100 prospect list (Pages was 93rd), but Bleacher Report had a list on April 18 in which Head didn't make the top 100 but was listed from 101-150. So as things stand, he's not that far off where Pages was ranked. If we had traded Pages by himself (and the Marlins got 3 more prospects as well) for Arraez, I think most of us would be upset.

It is going to be interesting to see how they deploy all these infielders. I'm guessing that they use the DH spot as a rotation of sorts. Machado is still coming back from surgery and only recently returned to third base, so he'll likely get DH days every third or fourth game, at least for a bit. Kim got off to a tough start defensively at SS but I have to imagine they'll want his glove out there, so the most DH days will likely come down to Arraez and Bogaerts, possibly in that order. Both of them have slightly negative defensive WAR's at second base so far this year.

It's a good addition for them, there's no question. The guy is the modern day Rod Carew. If the Padres happen to play down to expectations and miss the postseason again, I'd imagine they could look to flip him this winter to recoup some assets, a la their play with Juan Soto when he was an expiring contract. (It wouldn't be a Soto-like haul, of course, but he'd still fetch something decent.)

Baseball America new prospect rankings:

#42: Josue De Paula

Quote:
Baseball America updated its 2024 top 100 prospects list on Thursday, and outfielder Josue De Paula is now ranked as the Dodgers’ top prospect, making the jump from the “just missed” group ranked between 101-115 before the season to the No. 42 prospect in MLB now.

The blurb on De Paula, who doesn’t turn 19 until May 24, at BA said,

Quote:
“A prodigious hitter with advanced bat-to-ball skills and a discerning eye at the plate, De Paula is just scratching the surface of his potenital in-game power. The Dodgers outfielder is poised to cement himself as one of the game’s top prospects.”

#43: Dalton Rushing

Quote:
Catcher Dalton Rushing is right behind him at No. 43, up from 50th in the preseason.

#85: Andy Pages

Quote:
Andy Pages moved up from 96th to 85th after impressing in both Triple-A and the majors…

#92: Thayron Liranzo

Quote:
…catcher Thayron Liranzo went from unranked in the preseason to 92nd now.

The Dodgers have done a good job of selling high on some prospects, shame they couldn’t do so with this one.

The OPS of our top 7 hitters in the lineup are just silly.

To be fair, he’s only had 49 ABs this year.

That’s basically 10-12 full games?

Extremely small sample size.
