I don't know what the production people were thinking a couple nights ago
with the Wolves game, but at half-time they had a Black History Month
segment where Hassel read about a 3-minute dialogue over pictures and
video to explain an event in black history.
He sounded like the kid in Billy Madison who could barely read anything
over 4-letters long. It was embarassing to listen to honestly, I just felt
bad for him that the production people hadn't know better than to let him
stutter and mispronounce over 3-mins of dialogue in deadpan monotone.
It was painful. |
Yeah, but he could still be a math/science wizard. |

You get 400 pts for writing your name properly.
I also heard that Odom went to 3 different high schools.
One year in college.
Something like 4 different coaches w/ the Clippers.
One year in Miami.
And now 3 different coaches w/ the Lakers.
That's approximately 12 coaches/ systems in 11 years. He's had no consistency whatsoever. I also believe his mother died when he was quite young so he's had no consistency on the home front either.
Now that he's being asked to run a structured offense he's completely lost. The only consistency he's had in his life has come from the playgrounds.
Personally I think he seems pretty intelligent when interviewed so I don't know if the test scores are accurate.
I know his scores were discredited at one time. That was how he ended up at Rhode Island.
I'm a drug counselor for teens and Odom seems to have typical ADD type traits that emerge in his game.
Amazing potential that's never realized.
Practice of his strengths, neglects his weaknesses (no right hand, jump shot, etc.)
Inability to focus on the task at hand.
No stability/structure in his upbringing.
Never seems to improve (same stats as a rookie).

Standardized tests shouldn't label anybody's intelligence. I have a friend that is alot more intelligent than I am, yet I scored highed on ACT,SAT and LSAT than he did, but now he owns his own business and is very successful. |

Agreed gp5.
I've seen people take this "650" thing outside of this thread...
...After the thread was started I figured I'd play along and just try to have
fun with it... but even if LO isn't our option as a #2, he deserves better
than where this has started to go.

I agree but I don't think there is that much correlation between monetary success and intelligence either.
A lot of dumb people are very rich while a lot of smart people do not have jobs.
But it really doesn't take much intelligence to realize that Odom does not have the sharpest tool. |

Who cares? I'd rather have athletic ability and be as smart as Odom and make millions than score high on the SAT and work at a job that pays $60K a year. _________________ I'm like a Hadouken, down-right Fierce! |

Very much in agreement with you with financial/career success not
correlating (at least as "the" major factor) with intellect.
You want your factor?
Work ethic.
Kobe Bryant oozes with it.
Peyton Manning does.
Those are a couple guys I read tons about when they first came into their
respective leagues and right off the bat said to myself, "that guy is gonna
be one of the greats." (not a Colts fan by the way, just was what I
remember thinking at the time).
Lamar Odom
Rookie Year:
16.6 ppg
7.8 rpg
4.2 apg
1.3 blk
1.2 stl
This Year:
13.8 ppg
9.3 rpg
5.3 apg
0.9 blk
0.9 stl
Net Change From Rookie Year (6 Seasons):
- 2.8 pts
+1.5 reb
+1.1 ast
- 0.4 blk
- 0.3 stl
I said since the day we got him that we shouldn't expect any more out of
him than the stats he'd shown so far in the league.
Those who expected a ton more constitute half of the "Odom haters" now
because they got their hopes up and thought he'd change.
To those people? Ya shoulda known better.
He can still be a good 3rd guy for us, I've always maintained that.
But 2nd option? See above.
Work.
Ethic. |

From what I recall, some moron named Kevin Garnett had awful SAT scores. Thank your lucky stars he's not on the Laker roster. |

Div 1 is a sliding scale - the higher the GPA, the lower the SAT. FYI, if you have a 3.55 GPA, you can get a scholarship with a 400 SAT. With a 650 SAT, you need a 2.95 GPA. The minimum is 820 with a 2.00 GPA for Div 2. 1009 is the average SAT score for all college athletes.
In my day, the minimum was 700 if you had a 3.0 GPA. Nowadays, with the ADD and LD exemptions, you can take the SAT with no time limits and can take it as often as you like, so getting guys NCAA eligible is not THAT bad.

I can vouch! It's some great beer! I down a couple pints of it daily while I cruise the freeways in my self-propelled airconditioned porta-potty with a pair of those very same video models by my side and they do nothing but rave about how nice & generous of a guy you are! I have all of that too. Except the waterproof laptop. When I drop mine in the tub, I just buy another. Or when the battery runs out. _________________ Nerd rock in progress.

In 1983 the NCAA passed Proposition 48. This mandated student-athletes to reach certain academic eligibility requirements in order to compete for Division I colleges.
Under Proposition 48, student athletes are required to have a minimum SAT score of 700, or an ACT score of 17, and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in at least 11 courses in core classes, according to the NCAA Web site.
Things became a little tougher when delegates to the 86th NCAA Annual Convention passed Proposition 16.
According to the website, the proposition came in two stages, the first going into effect Aug. 1, 1995.
Under the first stage, the number of required courses was increased from 11 to 13 and two academic electives were added. According to the Web site, SAT/ACT and GPA requirements did not change.
In the second stage, which went into effect Aug. 1, 1996, one of the academic electives was moved to English. This meant four years of English were required instead of three. The SAT/ACT and GPA requirements also changed in 1996, according to the website. A sliding scale combining SAT/ACT scores and GPA in at least 13 core classes was instituted.
The website used the example of a student athlete with a SAT score of 700 (ACT of 17) needing a GPA of at least 2.5 to meet eligibility requirements. |

Oh yeah, and the minimum possible score on the SAT is 0. You start off at 400, gain four for every correct answer, and lose one for every incorrect answer. Since there are 5 options per question, random chance will have you losing one point four times for every one time you gain four. So random guessing should keep you at 400. But if you can manage to answer everything wrong, you can get a 0. Generally that ought to require that you actually know all the answers and guess wrong on purpose to try for a 0. Just being stupid won't do it. _________________ Nerd rock in progress.

since when did your SAT score have any bearing on basketball IQ. admittedly lamar's made some dumb decisions on court but its no worse than stuff I've seen kobe do. Kobe's supposed to be smart right?
The only difference is Kobe has the license to make those mistakes, he makes them a lot, but he also bails us out a lot. Lamar on the other hand does not have the same license, and I can't recall him ever bailing us out in a game. Hence everytime he makes a dumb mistake near the end, its magnified.
If you want to see a really stupid player play, check the lakers last year when one guy'd start bricking 3s in the final 2-3 minutes despite the team being down on single digits. He shot us out of enough games doing that. His name was not chucky atkins, no...kobe bryant.
Anyway Lamar's made some dumb decisions lately, that have lead us to losses. Its not so much the fact that he made the stupid decisions but more the fact that he doesn't contribute quiet enough to warrant making those stupid plays. |

If you just knew all posters here behind their nicknames, you'd be asking some of them for their autograph. Believe me.
