do not think that is true...with Deng, they would still be in tax next season....so they would be paying repeater tax on 18 M this year....then again next year....just stretching him is probably much cheaper. |
Way too lazy to do the math, but it would seem that you’re right ... I think.
If Anthony refused to give them a buyout discount however ...
How much money would OKC safe by trimming ten million in salary this year?
If it’s more than the eighteen million they’d have to spend on Deng next year, it may be worth to it for them. |
I have never took the time to calculate tax bills and how the repeater effects a team....I know it is just following the CBA rules and simple math....but still hoping someone does it for me. |

Does that even work?
Melo 27.9 mill
Deng 18 mill
5.7 Cap Space |

I mean, he'll be more useful than Lance Stephenson at a lower cost. But I'd lean no given that he'll take minutes from Kuzma and I'd rather see Brook back taking up frontcourt minutes at center since he provides at least some size and rim protection.
Of course, we all know Melo is going to be a Laker. _________________ Under New Management

yeah you're right, they'll still have to pay. Although I know it's significantly less because the salary they pay goes down by 10 mil, just not sure how much exactly they'll save in luxury tax. I can't imagine Melo and OKC agreeing on a buyout that would save them more than that 10 mil. |

I’m definitely not trying to give the resident board curmudgeons any more ammo than they need, but signing a bought out Melo would make me seriously question Magic’s judgment.
I’m an advocate for all of Magic’s moves thus far, but if this is true, he will deserve every slice of criticism that will be heaped upon his 6’8 frame. _________________ A creative scorer, a wing defender, and a shooter. |

Put him on the d-league team except for when we have injuries. It would make Drew's job a lot easier. Drew is the poor kid whose job is to constantly call Lakers fans on the season ticket waiting list and try to sell them SouthBay Lakers tickets. |

It’d be ten million plus tax charges that they’d be saving Just don’t know how much they’d be getting taxed on a ten million overage fee. _________________ A creative scorer, a wing defender, and a shooter. |

if he is willing to take a reduced role and become a spot up shooter, sign him for peanuts. he will flourish in the right system with a good coach |

Just made a spreadsheet and with the current cap estimate on sportrac, stretching Carmello would save around ($85M). Stretching cuts his number down by $18+M. $27.9M becomes $9.3M. And saves a tax average of 517% on the reduced dollars.
OKC is all the way in to the 575% bracket on the luxury tax with Melo

No thanks. Melo is a net negative player now. He'll lose you more games than he wins.
Also remember when we were interested in Boogie Cousins also? Remember before Twitter and reporters actually confirmed and verified (bleep) before throwing it at the wall. Well no more... Favorite phrase is "fluid" but I'm pretty sure it's the accuracy these guys are hitting the toilet. |

If Brook turned us down and IT went to Orlando I'd take him.
If either of those are in play... I'd take them instead even though we don't need any more point guards. Never hurts to have a prolific scorer on the bench.
But if Melo is willing to be a sub... sure
I'd rather have him be on our team than on Houston.
Especially since there is a good chance we will see them in the playoffs. |

Kuzma can play back up 3 with him at the 4, and the person spelling time from Ingram could be Kuzma in that scenario.
At that point Melo is only spelling for LeBron. _________________ How NBA 2K18 failed the All-Time Lakers:

The trouble is Carmelo is a one-year contract and Deng is two years, which means OKC would save money in the first year but lose money overall. They'll be looking for a lesser expiring contract for Melo rather than taking on additional years of someone else since they are going to have tax issues next year too. |

If you said who would sign Melo for 27 million... the answer would be zero unless some of Melo's family posts here.
But at minimum contract... it's a different question. |
