Rip City Beatdown... Give the Portland Trailblazers credit, they had the Lakers attention.

Despite the criticism that this team hasn't locked down on anyone this season, they have shown flashes of flexing their defensive muscle when required. Tonight, the Blazers had the Lakers attention from the jumpball. The game was over shortly later as the Lakers pounded them 121-96.

"We set the tone early defensively and we did an excellent job from the get-go," Pau said after tallying his fourth career triple-double, second as a Laker. He did it in just three quarters.

The passing on this team is superb. We're seeing more repost passes than ever, and as a result, Pau is moving it well, too, to a variety of cutters and shooters.

"We're a deep team, an unselfish team and this is what you get," Kobe said.

When the starters get through with teams, the bench is ready to clock opponents. They consistently extend leads and are responsible for many of the TKO's this Laker squad is delivering.

"They're a team that you can't go out there and play with low energy, or they're going to kill you," said Brandon Roy, who scored just 8 points on 1-6 shooting. "It's no secret they're stacked." His running mate, LaMarcus Aldridge, also had just 8 points.

Although it was the second night of the back to back, it wasn't like the Blazers faded late in the game. They Lakers won the first quarter 27-14 and didn't lose a quarter after that. Joel Meyers joked during the broadcast that the Lakers took the crowd out of it early with their dominance.

If you have the Lakers attention, better look out. Some might think that's an arrogant attitude, but the focus and intensity after winning a ring has always been an issue for any team -- let alone a back-to-back champion. That is always the challenge of a repeat.

These guys know what it takes to win, however, and have done nothing but that.

Kobe -- -- It hasn't been often that the Lakers could completely dismantle a team with Kobe scoring just 12 points on 11 shots. Or even just being on the floor only 24 minutes. With Pau and Lamar balling and the deep bench, this team can do that. When he sits, the bench has the ability to extend the lead on teams and they are doing it with regularity. Kobe said this team has a lot of shooters, screeners, passers and cutters. "You've got pick your poison with us, and you've got to make a choice. We have so many weapons," he said. It seems like the team is just starting to get up to speed, too. Kobe made just three baskets in this game. He got tapped on a couple of them. Defensively, he got the assignment on Dre and that seemed to be the only thing really working for the Blazers as Ron locked up Roy. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 3-11 shooting (0-2 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +20. The Action: He missed a wing three on the Lakers first attempt. He missed a long wing jumper. He missed a wing turnaround. He pounded the dribble in the post and sank the baseline turnaround. He attacked, pulled up on a cross-over and sank the elbow jumper. He was called for a charge on a drive. He was called for 3 seconds trying to post up Matthews. He couldn't finish a lob, so he brought it back down and got tapped on the subsequent fallaway bank. He drew FTs on the perimeter, he made both. He had 6 points on 2-6 shooting in the first quarter. He drew an illegal D on two Blazers, then made the tech. He missed a lefty jumphook in the paint. He missed a wide open corner three over the zone. He had 7 points on 2-8 shooting in the half. Second Half: He overpowered Batum and banked from the left side on the drive. He then picked up his third foul right at the start of the half. He missed a top-of-the-key jumper. He traveled trying to reverse directions after a jump-stop. He missed a layup down the middle of the lane, but Lamar tipped it in. He made a tech FT. He made another tech. He drew FTs sealing his man for a post entry, he made one. He had 5 points on 1-3 shooting in the third.

Gasol -- -- Again, Pau has looked like an MVP candidate. Even though he scored big in the last one, the complete game wasn't there. Tonight, Pau had his triple-double tonight before the third quarter was over. Good thing, too, because the game was about done and it would be a short night for him if/when the second unit did their jobs. He nearly had the triple-double in the first half. Few bigmen can put together the kind of all-around game that Pau brings on the offensive end. Long outlet passes for dunks, hitting cutters for layups, kicking out to shooters, it was all there. Pau also went after the glass early and often in this one after losing the rebounding battle in the last game. The Lakers completely dominated on the boards. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 9-13 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 14 boards (5 offensive), 10 assists, 3 steals and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +29. The Action: He kicked out to Ron for a three. He faced up and sank a wing jumper. He sank a top-of-the-key jumper. He hit Lamar against Roy for a layup. He couldn't tip in a Kobe miss despite a good effort. He missed a fallaway from the right side. Pau drew two men, pulled up and fed Caracter under the hoop against Roy for a dunk. Quick attack down the lane off the catch and he drew FTs, he made both. He backed down Aldridge and hit his lefty jumphook. He had 8 points, 6 boards and 4 assists in the first quarter. He poked a ball loose in the post. He found Barnes under the hoop twice for layups. He swished a jumphook on the repost. He grabbed a board, missed the putback, but tipped it in. He dunked off the dribble penetration and miss by Fish. He had 14 points on 6-9 shooting, 11 boards and 7 assists in the first half. Second Half: He spotted Lamar for an open 16-footer. He sank the elbow jumper off the behind-the-back pass from Lamar. He outlet to Lamar leaking down court for a dunk. He was blocked, got it back and sank the high-arching jumper with the shotlcock low. He hit Ron cutting for a layup and Pau had his triple-double before the third quarter was over. He dunked when Blake went off the glass with the pass on the breakaway. "I wasn't expecting that but I went and got it," Pau said. He scored 6 points on 3-4 shooting, had 3 boards and 3 assists in the third.

Lamar -- -- "He's right in midseason form," Phil said of Lamar's game so far. Another serving of Odomination tonight as Lamar dropped a double-double across Pau's triple-double. That's a damn good front line and Drew is still in the wings. Another rarity tonight -- Lamar led the team in scoring. He's engaged, active, crashing the glass, stroking the jumper. That confidence from the international ball this summer is carrying over. No doubt. Usually Lamar has to have a lot of room to get his game going, meaning the other team leaves gaps and spaces he can attack. Lamar is only taking advantage of that when he sees it. This is just a more balanced, confident all-around game from him than anything else. Love it. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 10-15 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 12 boards, 3 assists, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He missed a long wing jumper. He lost the ball off the dribble trying to attack to his left. He grabbed the board, pushed out with speed and scored a layup. He powered up on Roy on a high-low pass from Pau for a layup. He posted up, sealed his man to take a pass over the top of the D for a layup. He pulled the ball out of the post and sank the step-back 14-footer. He and Ron doubled Aldridge and knocked the ball off him. He kicked out to Fish for a three. Up high for an offensive board, but he couldn't finish the putback. He missed a step-back corner jumper. He was blocked on a handoff from Pau. He had 8 points on 4-8 shooting and 6 boards. Second Half: Bad post entry, right over Ron's head. He sank a 16-footer when Pau spotted him. He found Pau behind his back for a jumper. He dunked off the long outlet from Pau. Great follow tip on a Kobe missed layup barely a beat after Kobe missed it, too. He attacked to his right, took all kinds of contact on the drive and somehow hit the runner as he was almost behind the glass (it paid to be a lefty on that one). He missed a finger roll when Blake tapped an offensive board to him, he then went to the floor trying to recover the ball, but was out of bounds. He had 8 points on 4-5 shooting and 6 boards in the third. He went weak to strong, took the pass and banked with his left. He drained a three a couple steps behind the line straight away.

Artest -- -- He got the Roy assignment again and held him scoreless until Ron sat with a couple minutes left in the first half. "When he can focus on a player," Phil said, "and really get into what this player represents to a team, then it becomes a crusade or a mission for him. He's got the ability to get in body-wise to people and with his quick hands disturb their ball handling. So they're cautious with the ball." Roy seemed hesitant out there on how to attack. Ron not only got after him defensively, he worked him on the other end. He overpowered Roy in the post. Manhandled him. That will also wear Roy down on offensively. Not having Bynum on the floor gives Ron the room to get into the post and do that. Roy finished with 8 points on 1-6 shooting. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-8 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 2 boards and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +20. The Action: He drained a corner three on the touch pass kickout from Pau. He missed a lefty layup in the low post. Great reach to force a man to fumble the ball away after Ron switched on him. He picked up his second foul trying to help on Miller. He kicked out to Fish, grabbed the miss and scored the layup. He sealed Roy and drew a foul in the post. He sealed Roy again, this time scoring a layup on him. Second Half: He missed a long sideline jumper. He overpowered his man again in the post, missed, got it back and scored it. He flashed down the lane and was hit in the groin as he made a layup in traffic.

Fisher -- -- Phil put Kobe on Miller and Fish on the SF, Batum. Those two still ended up as the Blazers leading scorers, but the Lakers took Portland out of their game from the start. Fish played some scrappy ball, but on occasion had issues with the size. In a close game, Phil could easily go with a bigger defensive lineup if we wanted to tighten this up and leave Kobe on the point and Ron at the SG defensively. It didn't matter tonight. Offensively, the Laker PG spot combined for 17 points and 10 assists tonight. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 3-7 shooting (1-1 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He drained a DFish Special, the foot-on-the-three-line jumper from the corner. He got a piece of a ball in the post on Batum to force a miss. Nice post double to help force a miss. He pulled down a board, pushed it up and sank the pull-up from the FT line. He missed a three badly. He drained a three on the kickout from Lamar. He missed an open wing three. He jumped a passing lane and drew a clear-path foul on the steal and push out, he made both FTs. He missed a FT pull-up. He attacked and missed badly expecting a foul, Pau dunked it back in. He had 9 points on 3-7 shooting. Second Half: He drew FTs on a reverse on the break, he made one. He bulldogged his way to more FTs on a drive from the right wing, he made both.

Blake -- -- If you paid attention to the defensive end of the floor tonight, you might have noticed some excellent D by Blake. His lateral speed, rotations and recovery were all superb. He got multiple lateral stops. Very rare we have seen that from the point defensively in the purple and gold. The starters pounded on the Blazers, the second unit didn't ease off. They pounded them some more. "You can't just let up no matter what the score is," Blake said. Blake, of course, was going up against his former team. It's funny, you wouldn't have known Blake played in L.A. and at Staples last year. Hell, I bet he didn't even know. It's different being a Laker, and Blake is having a great time. "These guys are amazing. Not only players...people. We're enjoying each other as a team on and off the court," Blake said. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-4 shooting to go with 2 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and no fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: Great D to deny his man on a couple attacks, then he eventually stripped him from behind with a reach. He lost his man on a pinch post and scored a layup. Right after the interview with his dad, Blake swished a corner three. He went over the top perfectly to Lamar with a corner entry, for a layup. Second Half: He swiped the ball when his man slipped, pushed it up uncontested and went off the glass to Pau for a dunk. He attacked and kicked out to Brown for a three. He missed a wing three in semi-transition. He missed another three early in the shotclock. He attacked and kicked to DC for an elbow jumper.

Barnes -- -- He and Artest talked before the game about locking down opponents. "It's our goal this year to just shut the leading scorer off," Barnes said. "If you cut the head off the snake, it's hard to win." Barnes consistently mentions the importance of defense and rebounding. He may not have won a ring yet, but he speaks the language. He led the bench in rebounds and had double-digit scoring. Just more of the garbage work that kills teams. Phil went with Artest on Roy, then some Kobe briefly. I'd be interested to see any of the Three B's on him, as well. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-7 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He over threw Pau who was open for a lob. He cleaned up a deflected pass with a reverse layup. Quick hands to snag an interior feed from Pau that surprised him and Barnes was up quickly for the layup. Second Half: He missed an open baseline jumper. He stepped on the sideline trying to attack off the three line. He chop blocked Fernandez on a three as he tripped on his way to close out. He scored a putback layup off the Brown miss. He scored a layup off the Caracter drive and dish. He scored a layup cutting off of Luke for a pass. He grabbed an offensive board and found Sasha for a baseline jumper. He rattled in a wing three next time down.

Brown -- -- You might as well pretend he's a new addition to the bench, too, because this Shannon Brown didn't exist last year. His jumper is rock steady and fluid, hitting from all spots on the court. His improved handles get him to more places on the court and through some tighter seams. He's averaging 10 points a game now and has made 27-52 from the floor and 11-21 from three so far this season. Sensational start. Hopefully, it's a trend that we see all season and deep into June. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-12 shooting (3-6 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He took the outlet, lost Fernandez with a sweet high-speed inside-out dribble and he scored the layup. He attacked and missed a layup with his left. He missed a fading jumper from the top of the key. He tried to go to the inside-out dribble again on the break, but didn't see Roy behind him to swipe it. He missed a sideline three. Second Half: The back-door lob wasn't open so he immediately turnaround to take a pass and swish a short wing jumper. He drained a corner three next time down. He missed a step-back jumper from the wing. He drained a long wing jumper off the dribble. He buried a three from the same spot when Blake kicked out to him. He popped out and off the weakside split action and drained a wing three. He seemed surprised to be left alone from three shortly later and missed a wide open one.

Ratliff -- -- After Caracter's first stint, Theo stopped him before he sat down and was in his ear with some advice for the defensive end. This is one of the big things you hope he brings to the team -- vet experience and mentoring our young bigmen. He'll be in Bynum's ear, too. Despite some sore knees, he played 5 minutes in this one to start the fourth quarter. The game was not quite signed, sealed, and delivered at that point, but just about. That unit kept things in order. The Stats: He didn't score on 0-1 shooting, had 1 offensive board, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 5 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a tip-in attempt. He dumped Cunningham to the floor for a foul as Theo tried to get position.

Vujacic -- -- Sasha needs to keep his head up. The minutes aren't there now, but if anyone on this team knows that you have to be ready from the bench, it's the guy who as Pau said before introducing him on ring night, "knocks down two of the biggest freethrows in Laker history. No Laker fan will ever forget that." Sasha got some run in the final minutes. The Blazers went to some pressure D and that caused him some problems. Once that settled down, he was hitting shots from the perimeter. It would have been nice to see him run a little clock on a couple sets, but being aggressive and not letting up is the attitude this bench should have. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 turnover and 1 foul in 6 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a quick-fire baseline jumper against the press. He then coughed up the ball and fouled against the full-court pressure and gave up freethrows. He missed a three early in the shotclock. He faked a handoff one way, turned the other way and swished the jumper. He swished an open baseline jumper when Barnes found him. He attacked left, stepped back and drilled the 18-footer.

Walton -- -- Before the game, there was much discussion on the recent passing of Maurice Lucas. He, of course, won a ring with the Blazers and spent a year with the Lakers, and Bill Walton named Luke after him. Lucas used to come to the Walton house and play with the boys. "I just remember always thinking how massive and big he was when I was a little kid, but how nice and fun he was," Luke said. When Luke was in high school, he said he didn't know what was going on the first time he got the "Luuuuke" call from the stands. His dad loved it and told him they used to do that for Lucas. In the game, Luke didn't score but gave the team some vet leadership in the fourth. He slowed down the attack and ran some clock. He also started to get into the groove a little with his passing. The Stats: He didn't score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover and no fouls in 7 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He bricked an elbow pull-up badly. After a strong defensive board, he was picked from behind for a layup. He hit a cutting Barnes for an easy layup. He missed a three from the wing.

Caracter -- -- Prior to this game, Phil said Caracter will see more time on the floor in order to reduce Pau and Lamar's minutes. With the defense he played in the first half, he flat-out earned more minutes. He rotated, clogged the lanes, challenged shots and even managed to force Andre Miller into an airball when he was isolated on him. Very impressive for a rook. Offensively, he short-armed a couple of shots on post moves, but also had a quick spin to lose his man for a score, showed his range on a jumper and finished strong on another. He looked very, very comfortable out there on the floor tonight. That's hard to do for a rookie. Looking forward to seeing more minutes like this for him. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-6 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 3 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He sealed a help defender when Pau drew his man, Caracter took the pass and threw down on Roy. Nice challenge on a jumper after recovering from helpting to wall off a guard. Another excellent help switch to deny penetration and force a turnover. He was called for an illegal D. Great defense again switching on Miller on iso and forcing him into an airball and shotclock violation. Nice spin move in the post between a couple defenders, but he was short on the jumphook. He saved a hoop with a swat from behind and then recovered the ball. Second Half: He missed a layup on an off-the-mark lob pass from Barnes on the break, then fouled to give up FTs. He missed a short jumphook (he had Barnes open). He attacked and slipped a pass to Barnes for the layup to make up for it. Quick spin move in the post with the shotclock low and he scored a layup. He drained a 15-footer off the Blake drive and kick.

Phil -- -- Phil started with Artest on Roy, Kobe on Miller and Fish on Batum defensively. The Lakers led 13-8 midway through the quarter. They stretched that lead to 9 before the subs came in at the 3 minute mark... Phil brought in Blake and Caracter for Fisher and Lamar... Shannon came in for Kobe with a minute left... The Lakers led 27-14 after the first quarter. They held the Blazers to 37 percent shooting and no offensive boards... The Pau, Caracter, Barnes, Brown, Blake unit pushed it to a 35-16 lead, forcing a timeout... Phil brought in Lamar for Pau 3 minutes into the second... Phil sat Barnes for Artest when Roy returned... Phil subbed out Caracter for Barnes... Then went back to all the starters with more than 6 minutes left. Good rest for Kobe... Up 24, Phil sat Kobe and Ron for Brown and Barnes. Both starters had a couple fouls... The Lakers led 58-36 in a dominating first half on both ends. They shot 51 percent (24-47). The Blazers shot 36 percent (16-36). The Lakers had a 25-11 advantage on the glass and a 12-2 advantage on points off turnovers... The Blazers trimmed the lead twice in the first 6 minutes of the third only to see it bounce back up... Phil sat Kobe with under 4 minutes left in the third for Shannon with a 22-point lead... Kobe came back in for Ron to cover Roy when Ron picked up his third foul late in the third... The Lakers won the third 31-28... The Lakers led 89-64 heading into the fourth. Phil started a Ratliff, Odom, Barnes, Brown, Blake lineup... Phil brought in Luke for Ratliff after 5 minutes... Phil then went to the rest of the bench to close... The Lakers didn't lose a quarter tonight. They won the glass 49-25 while shooting 55 percent...

Thanks DB. This Laker team has the ability to take primary scoring options away altogether or at least slow them down. This is a great sign. Their 2 big guns went 4/15 and were a non-factor.

The scary part is that Kobe still hasn't played more than 37 points in any game this season. Matter of fact, was tonight's 25 minutes a season low? Wow.

What more can we say about Pau and LO? 19/28 for 41 pts, 26 rebs, 13 asts, and a +41. Wow.

Will we be able to afford to keep Shannon next year if he keeps this up? He was amazing tonight.

Thanks again DB!

In each of the past 3 seasons we've went to the finals, but rarely have the Lakers put together a win streak beyond 7 games or had this many players play unselfish championship-caliber basketball all game long. This team looks different, the kind of team that could make a habit of long winning streaks all season.

What a game by Gasol!!! Triple Double congrats!

Lamar Odom appears to be playing some of the best ball he's ever played, the B's are out in force, Fish is actually playing much more steady than he did last season, and Kobe's capable of turning it up any time he's needed.

Two other surprises tonight were the Blake off the backboard to Gasol gem, and the way Derrick Caracter handled himself on both ends of the court. Good job to the Rook!

Man is this team fun to watch!

14th!!!
Seriously, DB, your work is appreciated. Even when I see the game it's nice to hear your notes. I confess, I like the 'assessment' more than the blow-by-blow (the details of which must be enourmously time consuming for you.) Maybe one day when there is no game you could describe the process you go thru to put this together?

Re the game: When Luke came in and there were two bricks he thru up, I got that old (last-year) feeling about the bench not holding leads. Then the ship righted. It usually takes paying into the cap and getting older (but not too old) vets to come in for less to create the deep bench the Lakers have.

This team's new guys (Blake, Barnes and new-Brown) are not that old. Blake is paid about right, Barnes was a steal and Brown's work on his game makes him very underpaid. Perhaps with Luke and Sasha gone this unit (and development of the Rooks) can stay together for a year more than this one??? Brown needs to replace Fish, I think, and absorb his salary. Barnes can be paid out of Sasha's pot. What are folks thoughts on keeping the bench for the future?

He (Odom) missed a finger roll when Blake tapped an offensive board to him, he then went to the floor trying to recover the ball, but was out of bounds.

Aside from the off the glass dunk by Pau, this was my favorite play of the game. We were up by at least 20, and Odom was diving on the floor for a loose ball. love the effort!

thanks DB

Obviously, there's a lot of season left to be played, but right now the bench is playing fabulous—bringing energy, rebounding, scoring, defense ... what AREN'T they bringing!?!?

I'm hoping that a Championship-Caliber Team would have some staying power for Barnes and Brown, who will be the targets of the most money this offseason. Then again, with labor negotiations, the offseason will have a lot of uncertainty, and if Dr. Buss can quickly offer these guys some certainty in the $4-5 million per year range for each, I hope they'd bite. With only Sasha coming off the books though, I dunno if that's a financial reality. Anything above $6 mil seems prohibitive, but the rest of the season will determine that.

Thanks DB, I appreciate all your game recaps.

I was really impressed with our team D, especially how we double the post to take away the spin to baseline. Our pnr D was better, too.

Pau Gasol is just unbelievable, I think Pau's smooth effortless play puts Phil in a trance. Phil gets sucked into playing him a lot of minutes because he just loves what he's seeing and Pau really makes it look easy. If Pau can keep hitting those rainbow jumpers like that against Boston and Miami then they'ill be toast.

I'm loving Blake's all around game, especially his bulldog D. He moves his feet extremely well and never gives up. He's very alert to the help sequences, one time he was defending the guy on the left baseline, weakside, and he saw the D force baseline on the strong side, he got over there in plenty of time to take a charge, but in that instance a foul occurred by another player. But the rotation was so perfect.

On another sequence he was defending a drive and contested well, then deftly pivoted around to box out a Blazer big. He's so tenacious and efficient, I bet other teams hate playing against him.

Last observation regarding Fish, he may be overmatched by height and speed but he does a lot of little things that are smart and he deserves his props when he does them. he's good at the Rick Fox stripping at the waist technique and he reads passing lanes well. his nickname 'bulldog' is well deserved. Sometimes it's flat ugly or even comedic but the last couple of games have highlighted his will and ability to win.

This year, I wonder how much input the assistant coach responsible for scouting the opposing team has in decisions regarding the defensive assignments and substitution patterns.

Caracter has such good footwork on the block and once he starts converting again on those little jumphooks that for whatever reason he's short-arming right now, he'll be a horse down there.

This team is so loaded, I'm actually disappointed that he and Ebanks are going to spend time in the D-League.
