It was 100% what I expected. It would've taken ALOT for it to exceed my expectations or disappoint me. And it did neither. The direction, writing, and acting were all fine. Wasn't really my cup of tea. I prefer a little more visceral action in spy flicks (like Atomic Blonde, Bourne Identity, some of the good Bond movies). But going into the film, I knew I wouldn't get that in a Disney+ movie.

Did you see it in a theater or rent it?

Watched it at home.

The Lecter in it was made to look so pitiful after Hopkins played the part. Hopkins pones that role. Quid pro quo, Clarisse.

I think both approaches work and I'm a fan of Brian Cox's more understated Lecter in a movie that was really about Will Hughes and the Red Dragon. Hopkins rightfully owned Silence of the Lambs, but subsequent efforts to shoehorn him into later adaptations of Harris' novels diluted the initial impact he had in the 1991 masterpiece.

It probably wouldn't have been that much more visceral on a big screen, and I agree with you about the value in physical action over CGI. I'm curious how much the big screen for contemporary Hollywood spectacle blockbusters covers up for their lack of quality when viewed outside that environment.

I respect your opinions on aesthetics and understatements. I'll have another peep on YT. I always assume that you are some kind of Don Draper when it comes to movies. You remind me of the Z Channel guy Jerry Harvey. He was a movie savant. There's a fascinating documentary on him called "Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession". It's largely about Harvey's extremely troubled life and death. I copped it from Netflix about 10 yrs ago, I don't know if it's hard to find now, but I highly recommend it. It's up your alley for certain.

You mean that British docu series from the 70s? My dad had those on a one per month plan for awhile, and I still have a few of said tapes. Some were really good, like the one about the US's Pacific campaign and atomic bombing. However, it has a very definite British leaning. Anything they discuss about Americans, they show Yank soldiers running and tripping and bumbling while the Brit soldiers are always shown as heroic and masterful. That's my only gripe, but it IS a British production, so they have license. I've probably seen over half of the 26 epis, maybe 3/4ths. I wasn't able to get the whole set cus Pops cancelled it midway.

My grandfather was KIA on the German side. He was both in the SS and in the Gestapo from what my uncle was told by old relatives in Germany back in the 80s. He was killed in the Warsaw Uprising, there's a website showing all the SS members in Warsaw and he was on the list, tho he wasn't a notorious figure. My grandmother remarried a Yank and she and my dad and uncle came to the US in 1952, we still have my dad's plane ticket from that. They had some hard years as little Krauts who didn't speak English. However, it's good to note that my family is white, but my father was still an immigrant. Everybody deserves safe haven here if they can't get it in their homeland, not just the white Europeans much to Trump's dismay.

^Yep. That's the one. Starting episode 1 tonight. I'll let you know what I think.

BTW. You should write a book. I'd buy it and read it.

Edit: Just finished the 1st episode. Wow. No wonder this is reviewed so highly on IMDB. Amazing. Can't wait to watch episode 2 tomorrow.

Wow... whew-- put me through a lot of emotions and enjoyed the main character very much. The main character has high emotional intelligence
throughout all of the movie and is still able to smile forward today

I'll probably give Gunpowder Milkshake a shot. The cast is filled with people I like. And it looks like it has some good action choreography.

Summer Of Soul. LINK Harlem Culture Festival. It may be more a documentary than a film.

I tend to enjoy Wes Anderson's work. I will check out the French Dispatch when it comes out. That being said, I can totally see how people can find his work annoying.

Remarkably variable. Some stuff I love, and some feels like pretentious dreck. Very little in between.

Some Like It Hot: It's a bit depressing to think of how people have and will continue to gradually forget Cary Grant to the point where Tony Curtis' hilarious riff on Grant in 1959 won't make any sense to anyone under the age of 80.

Anyway, an enduring comedic masterpiece for a couple more decades at least.

"My last wife was sort of an acrobatic dancer. You know, a contortionist. She could smoke a cigarette while holding it between her toes. Zowie!

But ma~ma broke it up."

"Why?"

"She doesn't approve of girls who smoke."

The very underrated and underseen office comedy Clockwatchers (1997) is streaming on the Criterion Channel.

I don’t find him annoying, I think that anyone with a unique voice and style in their craft, which Anderson certainly has, should be celebrated. With that said I like about half of his work, the rest I don’t care too much for. I tend to gravitate more to his earlier work like Rushmore or Bottle Rocket.

Bottle Rocket and Rushmore were the only two of his that I have liked thus far, probably his two most commercial titles. I remember watching Bottle Rocket in the wee hrs back in 96 and I realized how fresh it was and a few parts were pretty amusing. The other advantage is that I didn't really know who Owen Wilson was yet and he wasn't as obnoxious then. Luke Wilson for that matter, too. I haven't really delved much into WA's "oeuvre" more than that. I attempted to watch Moonrise Kingdom when it was new and someone recommended it as a good WA flick. It was just a couple days ago and I watched a piece of it, but I've never been able to get thru it all. It felt like all of WA's gimmicks crashed in on themselves. WA overload. It's not that I couldn't understand or "get it", it was more that I didn't want to try.

(edit: Omar, I had a series of brainfarts in that reply and mistakenly called Wes A "PTA" as in Paul Thomas Anderson. Yeah, Boogie Nights and Rushmore are fairly different flicks. I dunno if you noticed that error and figured it out or were sayin to yourself huh?!1 or a little of both.)

I like his more recent stuff more, Grand Budapest Hotel is one I watch every year once it starts getting cold. I'm excited for this new movie, especially with that cast.

I wanted to like Rushmore, and did in parts, but it was just so Jason Schwartzman. And I have yet to see a performance by him that did t make me want to murder him.
