the first time i heard that term, a few months ago, i thought it was dumb . . . since it probably wouldn't make the homeless person feel any better about being homeless

They're bad dogs w/ babies around, too. Refer to pitbull thread. They've been known to "go there" and kill a baby in the crib just like pitts and Rotties. Expert level mutts. A husky was the alien in The Thing for a reason.

231) ratatouille I mean...that was my fave thing that Mommy would make for me on special occasions. That w/ near burned garlic bread (how I liked it, blackened on edges, crisp). She made the bomb touille. It's a loanword, but to an English speaker, it gives hints of rats going tooey. How the hell did they come up with that as the name?

Ha. And at some point, "historical" replaced "historic", it seems.

I refuse to use "an" before "historic" or "historical" . . . but if I were to drop the "h" sound, then I might be more agreeable to its use.

Sort of like relevancy, resiliency, competency, etc.

The word normalcy instead of the then-common normality was the result of Harding using it. Sort of akin to Chalky's use of nonce in, "For the nonce..." There was a number of posts re: nonce in the BE thread. Nucky re: Warren G.: "He has a way with words." True, he was thought of as a cunning linguist in both work and play.

Phrase "for the nonce" was also used in Miller's Crossing. I've never heard any other jaboney say it.

I cringe when pundits seem to use bully in bully pulpit in its current form instead of its old slang meaning of "great". TR found it bully. Paz de la Huerta to Margaret: "Bully fuh yeauw..."

RIP Chalky and TR. Two gents of their times.

225) jerk chicken

224) marinaTe vs marinaDe as if there had to be two different spellings.

223) puce and ecru (re: colorways, I don't like how the auto industry jumped the shark on non-metallic slate gray in one year. It used to be a cool, rare color for classic cars. McQueen had a slate Porsche that sold for gazillions. It also looked sleek on 50s era land yacht Caddies. Now it's overdone.)

Can you give me a thousand bucks, perchance?

That's an actual question. You can Paypal me if it's easiest, but I'll take cash, MO, check, stated value in drugs, etc.
