I am not sure how this one turns out, but it has all the markings of one of those storms that sneaks up on us, and inflicts major damage. Hurricane Michael did not get the week(s) coverage similar to most large storms as it kind of sprung up off the coast of Guatemala and Belize in the last week as a small storm, but has strengthened quickly. It is now expected to make landfall soon as a Cat. 4 storm with winds of 145 mph and 31' waves. It appears many did not evacuate, expecting a much smaller storm until the past 24-48 hours.
If anyone lives in the path of Hurricane Michael or had family in the panhandle.....stay safe.

The eye is going to hit Panama City directly. The storm's still 30-45 min away according to news reports but just saw video of beach house getting destroyed by the winds ahead of it. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant

I honestly cannot imagine taking on 150 MPH winds. I have experienced 100-110 MPH sustained winds with a little bit stronger gusts.....and the rain felt like what I would think someone shooting me with an automatic BB gun where ever I had exposed skin would feel like.....and it was near impossible to breathe facing into the wind directly.

Adkindo you're in Florida right? Stay safe man
I am fortunate, and not near this one. It is just cloudy with sporadic rain where I am....on the Central East coast.

The best beaches outside of CA are in this area. Hope these little towns survive.
now they are saying the eye wall may cross over Panama City which is not good at all.....more populated both residential and commercial. At least it will not be on the Dirty Side of the storm.

Shep Smith claimed the storm had made landfall based on the live radar....and confused at why the National Weather Service has not issued an alert. I think he thinks he broke a story or something......someone needs to tell him that a storm has not officially made landfall until the center of the eye or 50% of the eye has crossed onto land.

Update: Winds are now up to 150 MPH. At 157 MPH, the hurricane would become a rare Cat. 5 storm!
Hurricane Center now reporting 155 MPH winds.
About an hour ago the news reported the eye hit land. Are you in safe territory? _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Anyone here want to estimate the amount of on hand available money in your bank account or credit cards would be required just to try to drive away from this
Not to mention you need a way to evacuate
Then you make the decision "Weatherman says it's gonna hit 45 miles south of us we're probably ok" do you leave but it was ok or risk it maybe you have a basement? Wait those get flooded
What do poor people during times like this? How do they escape capitalisms wrath

With Katrina the city had buses to transport people away from flood zones. Of course not one bus was used, they ended up flooding. The mayor dropped the ball big time. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.

I have not seen strictly wind damage from a Hurricane outside of maybe Andrew that equals Michael. Mexico Beach and Tyndall Air Force Base look like a nuclear bomb went off.....buildings just crumbled in the face of 155 MPH winds. I guess if there is any silver lining.....the damage and destruction costs would have been exponential if the eye was a little more West....placing Panama City in the path of the most extreme winds.

That was FEMA's fault as well. They didn't even try to arrange for additional buses until after the storm hit. By that time the roads were all packed with those who had cars and the one's who didn't went to the Super Dome.

FEMA's primary purpose is to coordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred. FEMA definitely made mistakes in the aftermath of Katrina, but all of the massive failures before FEMA hit New Orleans, Louisiana is owned by Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin.
Blanco was very late in getting the bureaucratic ball rolling, rejecting encouragement to declare a state or emergency for several days. The federal government's hands are tied until a formal request from the state's governor is made. She made a very limited request on August 27th, then a more substantial request on the 28th.....Katrina made landfall later that night into the early morning hours of August 29th. Blanco should have made the declaration 48-72 hours before she finally gave in and requested assistance. That put everything and everyone behind the eight ball trying to sufficiently respond.
In regards to those buses, that was 100% on Nagin. He even rejected Amtrack's offer to evacuate New Orleans residents before the storm. Nagin declared an emergency, and then canceled it before abandoning the city, fleeing to Dallas with his family before the storm hit.
It is just not FEMA's role to come into a state or city to evacuate people before a disaster, especially without the request of the state and local governments.

Plus the major damage wasn’t from the hurricane, it came later when pumps failed and the levee broke. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.
