Quote: | Brian and Tim Kelly snatched a claim recently in a football competition that will make a decent family yarn for years to come.
Their glory apparently won't make it to national television, but that doesn't diminish the fun of it.
The Kelly brothers beat Kordell Stewart and Andre Rison in a game of 2-on-2 flag football. The competition was linked to a "Pros vs. Joes" event staged by a New York television station on Jan. 24.
"Pros vs. Joes" is a Spike TV series, in its second season, which puts amateur athletes in competition against former pros.
Brian, 35, and Tim, 29, qualified for the New York event when Tim won an event in Chicago. Brian played wide receiver and kicker for UW-LaCrosse. Tim, who lives in Chicago, was a receiver for St. Norbert.
"My brother heard on Chicago radio about a contest at the ESPN Zone, nothing more than one of those interactive games they have where you throw footballs at two moving targets," Brian Kelly said. "About 30 or 40 people played. Tim was the overall winner. The prize was to go to New York and play against these guys."
"These guys" were Stewart, who played quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens during his National Football League career from 1995-'05. Rison played wide receiver from 1989 to 2000 in the NFL for eight teams, including the Green Bay Packers in their championship 1996 season.
At its Web site last week, Spike TV posted some video of the Kellys' game against Stewart and Rison, but it has since been taken it down to make room for other promotions. In the first game against Stewart and Rison, Brian returned an interception on a pass thrown by Rison for a touchdown. Tim threw Brian a touchdown pass in a second game. Stewart and Rison competed against four teams of "Joes" at a 20-yard field and end zone set up in Grand Central Station.
Brian said both Stewart, 34, and Rison, 39, were gracious, especially Stewart.
"Kordell was extremely social," Brian said. "He's the ideal kind of guy for a venue like this. Rison wasn't quite as social, a little different demeanor. He didn't say anything objectionable.
"Their mind frame coming in was they weren't looking to get embarrassed, so they were competitive," Brian said. "After the interception their eyes changed a little bit. They understood we were serious about winning."
Brian Kelly said he thought at first the competition was to be made part of an episode on "Pros vs. Joes." But in the end the brothers were told the video may become part of a promotional spots for the show. |
