It depends on what criteria you're using. If you're going to off:
- Delivery Skills
- Vocabulary
- Socio-Political Commentary
Then I'd have to go with the GOAT - Rakim.
Then probably:
Brotha J - X-Clan
Dave - De La
KRS One
Q-Tip
Now, the greatest Hip Hop producer of all time is a no-brainer - Dre.
Next:
DJ Premier
Bomb Squad
DJ Jazzy Jeff
Prince Paul _________________

Slug (don't believe me, DL "The Woman With the Tattooed Hands", best poetic rap song)
Eminem (more than 3 years ago)
Mos Def
Aesop Rock (daylight one of the greatest songs ever)
B.I.G. (when not doing stupid P. Diddy-like tracks)
Common (can be very "on", or very "off")
Talib
Q-Tip
Pac (when staying away from THUG LIFE matters)
Chuck-D
Sage Francis
NaS
KRS-1
Kanye (of the mainstream new school at least)

I wouldn't call him the best of all time, but J-Live has been amazing for awhile now, with very little notice. If you're looking for an underground act that likely isn't playing anywhere on the radio, but incredibly gifted lyrically, check him out. |

also eminem should not be producing !!!!!!!!!!!!!! his beats sound like they could be use for a kids toy ... btw tupac wrote more than just thug life..it was poetry !!!!!!!
just look at this.....beautiful
when your hero falls from grace
all fairy tales r uncovered
myths exposed and pain magnified
the greatest pain discovered
u taught me 2 be strong
but im confused 2 c u so weak
u said never 2 give up
and it hurts 2 c u welcome defeat
when ure hero falls so do the stars
and so does the perception of tomorrow
without my hero there is only
me alone 2 deal with my sorrow
your heart ceases 2 work
and your soul is not happy at all
what r u expected 2 do
when ure only hero falls
not correct spelling so dont go on and start flamin cuse i know. just showing that tupac wrote more than just thug life |

Word, J-Live is the truth. Dude used to be an English teacher and the way he structures his rhymes reflect that. He is also a great DJ and often raps and scratches at the same time during his shows.
Also worth mentioning are Gift of Gab, Black Thought, Supastition, Illogic, Common, Krs -One, Chuck D, Rakim, Brother Ali and Eyedea. _________________ "The advice I get from Magic, Michael and those guys, that's always sacred," Bryant said. i can't believe that nobody has mentioned the Immortal Jay Dilla for best producer ever. His beats are beautiful. I would go with DJ Premier as my #2, and then Dre would be my #3
as for best lyricist, i might have to go with Rakim. That's tough though. |

who do you guys think is the best rap lyricst of all time?
personally i love nas. for god sakes he wrote Still Dre and that's some people's fav song. a lot of ppl don't know he writes songs for other artists. |
I thought it was Jay-z that wrote Still D.R.E. Can't chime in on the best lyricist portion of this. I think there are too many factors that come into play.An artist can have some crazy, make you think type lyrics, but his voice and delivery might bore you to death. It depends on what you're lookin for.
As far as beats go, I know I'll catch heat for this, but Dre is overrated. He gets plenty help from other producers and samples a lot... and he loses points for delaying Detox. Timbaland is killing everyone right now.. love him or not. |

great song, but actually, jay-z wrote the lyrics for still dre.
he originally wrote a track that was too east coast for dre. jay came back with what you know as still dre. i heard him talkin about how sick it was jay could write a song like that bout west coast life.
no one touches pac. he's been dead 10 years and his music is still relevant today. socially, politically, ect.....
and noone had the diversity of topics in his music like pac. "brendas got a baby"-tragic.
keep your head up- inspirational
trapped- police profiling and brutality
me against the world- struggle
i get around- party joint
to live and die in la, california love- repin his home
i aint mad at ya- emotional
dear mama- admiriation and love
changes- uplifting socially
hit em up- straight up anger and revenge
unconditional love- and so on and so on...
just so many, could be here for days naming them.
the guy wrote about everything and anything. he was so dynamic, so many sides to him. and if you've ever read his poetry, you'd see a whole other side to him. he's universal. go around the world and they know and love pac. don't think they know redman, as ill as he is.
and pac passed at 25, think of where he'd be now if still alive musically.
no one touches pac imo. a poet, leader, revalutionary ect.... _________________ Spark the ism, my expertism, is lyracism, my flow will take you over like I was hypnotism...so where's the lighter, to start the cypher.... |

I dont know if people realize that pac was bigger than measly Hip Hop. You can let Jay, Biggie, nas and those type of guys fight for the scraps from that little table. Tupac is beyond that. I used to hate the guy with a passion till about three years after his death. After reading rose from the concrete however I have a new appreciation for who he was. Misguided yes but had he lived he would have straightened out to be an amazing leader. _________________ "I was laying myself on the line by saying, if this doesn't work in three to four years, if we're not back on the top then I will step down because that means I have failed,"

Nas -- untouchable in his prime
Rakim -- The GOAT
The next person is hard to figure out. Toss up between Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, B.I.G. , Black Thought (The Roots), Common Sense, De La Soul, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, etc. |
