you know that top 10 isn't bad but it is an absolute embarassment to have u2, carole king and nirvana in the top 10.

Hey what's wrong with Carole King?

She sings the theme song to Gilmore Girls.

there's nothing wrong with carole king. to say she has made one of the top 10 albums of all time is insulting to actual artists who are true geniuses.

Tapestry really is a great album. Not my cup of tea, but a great album, nonetheless. Top ten of all time? Maybe not, but pretty far up there. Also remember that this is just the latest of dozens of such lists, and they all consistently rank this album very high. So it's not just one review being stoopid.

As for U2, gotta disagree with you there, too. JT -is- one of the great albums ever (despite being a little weak toward the end). I'd also put The Unforgettable Fire on the list.

honestly, this is one of the worst lists I've ever heard. sure albums like sgt. peppers, exile, dark side of the moon, iv, are all close to appropriately ranked.

but avril lavigne? alanis morisette? 50 cent?

the fact that avril's "let go" is ahead of ziggy stardust, al green, white blood cells, illmatic, aquemini.... no credibility.

agree on U2 and carole king, but Nirvana's Nevermind deserves to be there. It basically put grunge on the map, plus every song on that record is a classic.

nirvana is one of the most overrated bands of all time...and i really like them. their status as a perennial top ten band, album etc.. is due to the circumstances surrounding kurt cobain and his suicide. their "image" has always trumped their music.

contrast that to the band radiohead, who make brilliant music but have no image...you can see what matters most in the music industry.

QFT. The accolades that have been showered on Nirvana since Cobain's death, and the subsequent lifting of Nirvana to legendary status is one of the worst cases of undeserved praise the music industry has ever seen. They were no better than any other grunge band that happened to come out at that same time, and enjoy their 15 minutes in the spotlight, until the fad wore off.

I had to disagree with a lot of these, but then I got to thinking about how they ranked them (which I am not sure but I am taking a guess here). Is it really the music on the albums, or what the album did at the time of their release? Sgt Pepper was a ballsy move at the time, and Darkside of the Moon was brilliant (though not my personal favorite PF album).

Shania Twain? Well, she did sort of start the Nashville pop sound, or as my gf said, she got the belly shirt look started up.

Alanis Morrisette? The whole angry female voice became popular.

Nirvana really put grunge on the map.

You can debate a lot of these albums in the same way. It's not just the music on the albums, but what factor the album had on history and musical history.

Just a few observations:

- Elvis Presley appears only once on the list ranked at 147
- Queen appear on the list only once ranked at 152
- There are only 4 Jazz albums on the entire list
- Avril Lavigne
- There is one Classical album on the list
- No Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Cream, Louis Armstrong, King Crimson, Nina Simone, Deep Purple, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles.... Actually this could go on for a while
- I can't be bothered to double check, but I believe David Bowie, Elton John and Bob Dylan only make one appearance each
- Avril bloody Lavigne??

That's barely scratching the surface.
Obviously you're alway going to have disagreements when it comes to matters of taste, but that is simply not a good list.

I think the Red Hot Chili Peppers are too far back. And I'd prolly put Californication before Blood, Sugar, Magik. Glad Linkin Park made it. I love Nirvana, wish In Utero had made the list.

And I guess this is my own opinion but, The Offspring~ Smash... thats not a top 200 album? That is prolly my favorite cd of all time.

I dont recall seeing any Bad Religion or Ramones either..... beh!

Kid A not being top 5 nullifies this list.

What? No Akon on this list? Shocker.

Obviously, everyone is going to have a different opinion than what this list has. They're ranking something that cannot be ranked. You cannot seriously give out Grammy awards, and you cannot rank albums.

I am no fan of Michael Jackson at all, but I can certainly see why people would like Thriller. Mostly I can see why any of these albums - with a few exceptions - can be on the list, even though I don't care for the artist.

Better just to sit around your AMC Pacer on the football field drinking beer and talking with your friends about why Van Halen I is the greatest album ever than to take this list too seriously.

That is a good album.

But what about Massive Attack's Mezzanine? Also another great album. I think it was voted somewhere as the best album to have on while having sex. That should count for something.
