... how long did you last on it?

Mine was cleaning restrooms at a gym at 16 and I did that for a whole summer. To this day, I try to be as nice as possible to the cleaners at the gym I work out at, for I know how bad it is. Imagine looking at floating turds and right when you look the other way, a naked 80 year old dude walks by, saggy balls and all. And the smell -- a combination of feces, urine, and sweat, F-ing nasty. Oh the horror!

Worked in a boiler room for 3 days over 25 years ago.

I still remember my line exactly after all these years.

"Congratulations on answering your telephone this evening. This is lakersfreak from the Orange County Shopping Spree program, as heard on the Might 690 am radio station, and your number has just be selected by our computers to recieve over $1,000 worth of merchandise, services, gifts and entertain. Congratulations aren't you excited?"

Of course they had to shell out a $40 fee to get the 'coupon book'.

telemarketer.

we sold auction listings for reposessed cars and homes. it was a total scam..you could get that information for free if you did a little searching. plus we automatically billed your credit card every month unless you call to cancel (and you have to go through like three people to cancel, all of which will try to convince you to stay). there was also language in the script that tricked people into signing up for even more scammy deals in the same purchase.

i lasted about 3 months.

Independent undergraduate researcher

I worked in this biological research lab at my school and the PI was a Harvard graduate.
He promised the world before I started and as soon I as I started, he turned into a devil, asking me to come in 6 hrs a day despite having 4 classes, asking me to work at the same efficiency as postdocs and graduate students.

I got cut for not having my "heart" in it after two weeks but I'm glad it happened because man what a stressful job for one that DOESN'T PAY!

Yang Xu at UCSD. The worst professor ever... ever.

I worked at a pet store in a mall when I was in high school. Cleaned dog poop all day. Have some really nasty stories including parvo poop being spilled on a girl's hair and hamsters squished by 10-gallon aquariums (ever seen a hamster squished flat as a piece of paper?).

Some of the worse places are where a company is shrinking. You arrive at a company only to find that they just fired a bunch of people. People resent the fact that you are there. They are angy, because they haven't gotten any raises in a while. Sometimes, they have taken pay cuts. They see you as a threat. They want to make those around them look as bad as possible to try to protect their own positions. All you can do is work hard and try to be helpful. Often it is a no win situation.
