NY Times article

Quote:
Yielding grudgingly to the growing European bias against smoking in public places, Germany announced today that it would seek to ban smoking in restaurants, discotheques, schools and other public buildings — but not in pubs, bars or under beer tents.

The compromise, worked out by Germany’s coalition government, would bring this country, Europe’s biggest tobacco market, closer to its neighbors in curtailing public smoking. But it would fall short of recent laws passed by Britain and France, which also ban lighting up in pubs and bars.

Antismoking groups said the proposal was a milestone, given Germany’s long resistance to any restrictions. They called on the Parliament to broaden the ban when it votes on it, probably next year.

It is SO nice to enjoy a meal without it being ruined by cigarette smoke, or go out to a bar or club and not come home stinking of smoke. I am always surprised by this when I travel to MA or NY, but here in MI smoking is allowed anywhere. I hate that cigarette smoke on my clothes.

If I am going to stink, let it by own natural stink that offends.

I am still really surprised France made the same ban.

What really stinks is people legislating what others can and can't do. Businesses that cater only to adults should have the right to allow or disallow smoking at their discretion. You have the discretion not to go there. Why does everyone seem to think the world must comport itself to only their tastes and habits?
