All these cost about $50 and have the same specs...

Samsung Spinpoint MP0402H
Toshiba MK4032GAX
Western Digital Scorpio WD400VE
Fujitsu MHT2040AH

40GB
ATA-100
5,400 RPM
8MB Buffer

*The Samsung does have a 5 year warrenty vs. 3 for the others.

Not sure about the differences between the brands you mentioned, I think it all comes down to personal experience. Hard to go wrong with Western Digital.

But would you be willing to look at a SATA 7200 rpm drive instead? The cost probably wouldn't be significantly more, but you'd get more performance.

I'd love to but my computer is old and only has an ATA interface.

Aaah - gotcha. Then yeah, I say go with the WD as they generally have the best rep. But really, I don't think there's much differentiation, they're all about the same.

It's hard to go wrong with any one of those. True, WD is certainly the most common when it comes to HD's, but they've all been doing it for about as long. I've owned each (expect for Toshiba) in notebooks & desktops and they all were great.

Only manufacturer I has issues with was a Maxtor several years back (it caught on fire)...actual flames. It was awesome!
