Is there a way you can encode an option in the profile to remove this thing? Have it on by default, but give the user the choice to turn it off (Like in the game World of Warcraft)

I really can't see how this is a bad idea, and I'd assume that most users would turn off the filter.

I assume you mean "turn off" filter so a particular user can read it if they choose. If so, with everyone turning it off even the young ones would be reading it. The whole point of the filter is to keep the site family oriented. Seeing cuss words is overrated anyway. 99% of the time you can usually figure out what the "bleeps" stand for based on the context. "I need to take a...." "Luke Walton is playing like...."

Actually, as with all forums on the internet, you need to be at least 13 to register which would mean there wouldn't be 8 year olds on here.

And it's user based, you're thinking of it from a server-side point of view.

Let's say you type "(bleep) the Spurs"
If I turn off my filter, it appears as what it means "F the spurs"
If someone else chooses to keep his filter on, it appears as "(bleep) the spurs"

I can't see how it would do more good than harm. People would just get into arguments and someone would drop the f bomb and it would get even worse. I honestly don't see what good would come of it.

No, I totally got what you're saying. But who isn't to say the younger viewers wouldn't turn off the filter also? That's just defeating the purpose of having a filter in the first place.

And there's no point in placing the option in a very obscure place (or anything of the like) because young kids are smarter than given credit for, they'll find a way around it.

I just don't see what good can come from seeing people toss around F-Bombs.

Typically the word is altered by the script as it is posted.

That way it's a one time deal instead of having to alter it every time the post is read.

It's an efficiency thing.
