Tip in at the Buzzer... It came down to a single defensive stand -- not good when the score is 117-116 with 12 seconds left. The Pacers Troy Murphy got a hand on a missed layup, tipping it up to bounce around on the iron. A Laker win or loss hung on the rim. As the game clock expired, the ball dropped in and the Lakers took their second defeat of the season, 118-117.

A one-point loss. Pick your poison: The 12 missed freethrows. The 19 offensive boards. The 6 turnovers to start the fourth quarter. A buzzer beater at the half on 70-foot pass Vlad should have stolen. Three straight quarters of scoring 30+ points, only to score 16 in the fourth. So many little things that you could focus on.

The one larger issue that set the stage for the loss was the 118 points the team gave up. The defense was soft except for a brief 3-minute stretch of the third when the Lakers went on a 17-0 run.

That should have been where the Lakers seized control and took the win. They had a 15-point lead to start the fourth and then proceeded to cough up 6 turnovers.

There was no sense of urgency and little extra hustle on the defensive end. One play seemed to typify the effort. In the middle of the third quarter, Marquis Daniels missed a dunk when we ball watched. We relaxed as he missed it, the rebound popped out to another Pacer, who passed it back to Daniels under the hoop. He missed a layup again. Finally, we recovered to foul him for an And-1 on his third attempt. Well done.

"They just out-hustled us for the ball," Phil said. If the team wants home court advantage, they've got to bring better effort on the defensive end. "The extra shots they had, the second-chance points they had, made the difference," he added.

Interestingly, the Pacers own two of the Lakers and Celtics losses this early season. The Lakers attention span seems to have a length of 7-straight wins before it falls apart. Time to start another streak.

Kobe -- -- Offensively, Kobe had some staggering plays. He was adding to the highlight reel late in the first half with some virtuoso sequences...double cross-overs, passes off the backboard on his way to surpass the 22,000-point mark. With a minute left, he sank a 20-footer. He then missed a key elbow jumper with 12 seconds left. His three shooting was MIA (including a key miss in crunch time). Defensively, he was sagging off three shooters too much and we paid a price. He even had a few sequences of ball-watching, which is something he hasn't been doing as much this season. The Stats: He scored 28 points on 10-21 shooting (0-5 from three, 8-10 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. The Action: He missed a wing three on the first shot of the game. He hit a leaning, short baseline jumper in the same set. He missed a runner off the glass, looked like Bynum was open for a pass. He drew FTs when he was stripped at the wing, he made both. He goaltended a jumphook, obvious call. He missed a long three, settling against Rush. He attacked in early offense and drew FTS, he made one. He missed a fade in the lane. He went up high to pull down a lob with one hand, gathered it as he landed and then scored. He went between his legs, attacked and scored the layup. He spun baseline away from the double team and scored a reverse. He took Rush to school: he crossed over, up-faked to put Rush in the popcorn machine, stepped through, passed off the glass to himself and scored the layup. Next set, he crossed over Rush badly, crossed over the help defender and scored the And-1 layup with 2.2 seconds left (that was his 22,000th point), he made the FT. He had 15 points on 6-11 shooting with 6 boards. Second Half: He accelerated and hit the floater from the right side. He drew an illegal D call while double teamed (talk about having a team worried), he made the FT. He pumpfaked Daniels into the air and hit the elbow jumper. He missed a three, Pau got it, Kobe cut and hit he short bank. He ball-watched and his man scored a layup. He missed a three with the shotlock low. He missed an And-1 layup off the drop pass from Bynum, he made both FTs. The offense stalled and he bricked a tough turnaround. He got blocked forcing it into a defender next time down. He attacked from the wing and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a three from the top of the key in early offense with 3 minutes left, not good shot selection. He swished a pull-up 20-footer with just under a minute left to take a 1-point lead. He missed an elbow jumper with 12 seconds left.

Gasol -- -- Pau left 4 points at the line. Uggh. He's usually one of the dependable freethrow shooters. Defensively, the Pacers were able to pull our bigs away from the hoop with their perimeter-savvy bigmen. That may be part of the issue we had with boards, but it was still the Pacer bigmen who were killing us on the glass. If our bigs have to help out, someone else needs to box out. And when a shot goes up, our bigs need to box out, too. He and Lamar didn't secure one board with a minute left and Pau ended sending a Pacer to the line in crunch time. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-12 shooting (6-10 from the line) to go with 9 boards (4 offensive), 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 36 minutes. The Action: He missed a righty jumphook. He hit a short jumphook when Vlad found him in the lane. Late pass to Bynum that hit the rim, layup the other way. He attacked Nesterovic off the dribble and drew FTs, he made both. He couldn't handle a zip pass from Kobe off the screen-roll. He faced up and swished a wing jumper. Good job getting down the floor, he took the pass from Fish in the lane, spun and scored a layup. He attacked from the left elbow with the shotclock low and drew FTs, he made both. Bad pass, dunk the other way. He was pushed from behind on the glass for FTs, he made one. He was held on the offensive glass for FTs, he missed both. He hit a 16-footer off the pass from Kobe. Nice swat from behind to save a layup. He had 13 points on 4-5 shooting and 5 boards. Second Half: He grabbed a Kobe miss and hit him with a pass for short bank. He was doubled, took contact and still made a turnaround. He faced up, attacked baseline and was fouled on the reverse dunk attempt, he made one FT. He was hit on a dunk with no call, but got it back. Difficult high arching baseline turnaround and it went over a double team. He scooped up the loose ball, pushed out the break and no-looked to his right to set up FTs (how sweet is it when your C-spot can give you that?). He missed an open 16-footer. He dunked off the two-man game with Lamar. He missed an open jumper short. He and Lamar couldn't secure a defensive board and then Pau fouled Daniels to give up FTs and the lead with 1:16 left.

Bynum -- -- Those perimeter shooting bigmen again gave us issues. Bynum got burned by the pick and pop with Rasho. It's difficult to try to anchor penetration and contest your man's jumper, but if he's hitting you got to make him attack or do something else. Bynum was away from the rim covering Rasho on the final defensive stand. Offensively, some very nice sequences for Bynum in the post. I wish we could have seen more of it. He had a spin move that James Worthy, the master, gave him props for after the game. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-9 shooting (5-8 from the line) to go with 9 defensive boards, 1 assist, 2 blocks and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. The Action: He fumbled a dribble away in the post. He took a bounce pass from Vlad in the lane, spun to lose his man and hit the layup with contact. Early low position in the lane and DFish found him for the post score (more of this, please). He took all kinds of contact while riding in a layup with no call. He missed a transition throwdown, almost a pretty play off the lob. He drop-stepped, stepped through and drew a foul on the dunk attempt past Rasho, he made both FTs. Sweet spin baseline on the next trip down to lose Rasho and he dunked (more of that please). He missed a runner in the lane off the Sasha pass. He had 10 points on 4-6 shooting. Second Half: He was held trying to power up for the score, he made one FT. He was mugged on a jumphook with no call. Kobe set him up off the two-man game, he was hit hard for FTs, he missed both. Bynum set up Kobe for FTs off a nice drop pass. He dunked when Farmar served him a behind-the-back pass at the front of the rim. He reversed jammed a lob from Lamar, calling for it as he trailed the break. He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he made both.

Radmanovic -- -- Vlad had a decent scoring night, but his soft game on both ends was indicative of the Laker problems. There was a lack of intensity. The second-half turnovers were ridiculous. I think this was a game where again we could have used the Machine a little more, sliding Kobe to the SF for Vlad. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-8 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 5 rebounds, 1 assist (looked like he had 2), 4 turnovers and 5 fouls in 23 minutes. The Action: He hit Bynum with a bounce pass in the lane for a score. He hit Pau with a drive and pass for a score. He was called for a carry. He drained an early offense three from the wing. He swished a wing jumper on a split play. He missed a corner three. He missed a wide open three. He drained a weakside three, left open. He let Granger get a 70-foot pass and hit the jumper at the buzzer (Ariza would have swiped the pass). Second Half: Soft post entry was easily picked off. He missed a leaner from 15 feet out. He swished the wing pull-up jumper. He passed to Kobe as Kobe turned his head and the ball was picked off in the backcourt and Vlad fouled...he was then benched after 5 minutes of action. He charged, attacking off the dribble. He missed an open wing three.

Fisher -- -- Fish was able to go under screens to deny a lot of penetration, giving Ford the jumpers. That helped a lot, but Ford still ended up with 21 points and 8 assists. Our transition D was sorely lacking. Even the usually dependable DFish missed a freethrow tonight. He played long minutes tonight. Hopefully, he has his legs under him tomorrow. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-5 shooting (1-2 from three, 5-6 from the line), to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 35 minutes. The Action: He missed a wing three. He missed a fading elbow jumper. He shook his man and hit hte 10-footer. Nice hustle to draw a loose ball foul on an offensive board, he made both FTs. He tried to attack from the three line and was drilled by Daniels, he made one FT. Second Half: He sank a three from the top of the arc on good ball movement. He airballed a three and wanted the foul. He drew FTs on a corner jumper, he made both.

Lamar -- -- Lamar led all Lakers with a +10. We could have used more defensive boards from him out there tonight. He only managed 3. He did, however, get in on some shot blockage, which is something we've been missing lately. He was in on a couple of sequences that were big in crunch time, a botched defensive board with Pau and an open three. He also set up Pau for a huge dunk, too. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 28 minutes. The Action: He missed an up and under from the post. He swatted Granger from behind. He attacked Rasho in transition and drew FTs on the layup attempt, he made one. Wow, quick around-the-back pass to a trailing Ariza on the break for an And-1. Early offense post position and he powered over McRoberts for an easy layup. He swipped a pass, pushed out the break and drew FTs, he made one. Second Half: He spotted Bynum under the hoop for the alley-oop. He swung it to Sasha for a three. Quick attack off the dribble to his left, he changed directions with a spin and drew FTs, he made both. He worked the two-man game with Pau, attacked to his right and bounced it to Pau on his left for the dunk with under 3 minutes to play. He missed an open corner three.

Ariza -- -- Trevor was the driving force in our third-quarter run. There were some jawdropping defensive sequences where he just owned Granger. That intensity and fire was what this team had been missing all game. At least someone brought it. As mentioned, he's streaky with his freethrows...he made all five of his attempts. He had a few turnovers in this game. It was interesting, though, that usually he ended up swiping the ball back to regain a possession that he botched. He only had 3 steals credited to him, but he was involved in causing 6 (not counting the block, which he controlled, either). The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-8 shooting (0-1 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 steals, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. The Action: Quick first step on the baseline in early offense and he scored a layup. He was called for a travel. Nice reach to strip a man on help D to get it back. He traveled in transition. He missed a layup in traffic. He missed a pull-up jumper, no ball movement on that sequence. He was blocked trying to power up under the hoop. He was fouled on a layup after he stole the ball, he made the FT. Second Half: He was called for a three-second violation. He got it back on the other end with a steal and dunk. He knocked a ball into the backcourt, couldn't beat another Pacer to it, then he sripped Granger and was undercut by him on the dunk and went down hard (flagrant one), he made both FTs. Wow, another steal on Granger and he took it for a dunk. He hit the rim on a halfcourt runner at the buzzer. He stripped a ball off Ford's leg and out of bounds. He missed an And-1 layup trailing the break, he made both FTs. Oh...my...Granger attacked to his right, Ariza recovered to spike the layup attempt down and control it with 3 minutes left. Granger hit a three on him in early offense.

Farmar -- -- Farmar was part of that huge third quarter run, but he was also a big part of that let down to start the fourth. He had a couple sloppy turnovers that cost us possessions and allowed the Pacers to get some momentum going. That's always been a knock on him, and if he's going to floor general this team, he needs to make some better decisions. Defensively, he was as soft as everyone else. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 13 minutes. The Action: He got backdoored for a layup and took it back to his man for a layup on the other. He missed a leaner attacking past his man. Horrible call, beating his man to the spot on D, Jack plowed him down, should have been a charge, if anything. Second Half: Nice use of his body to shield his man, then he banked over Rasho. Sweet play next time down, blowing past his man, then giving Bynum a perfect behind-the-back pass for a dunk. Quick attack and he went cross-court to Sasha for a three. He missed a wing jumper. He traveled trying to create off the dribble against Ford. He missed a layup tyring to power up off the Bynum handoff. He threw a pass away off the two-man sequence.

Vujacic -- -- The Sick Jumpers of Death were out tonight...unfortunately, the Machine only got 11 minutes. I'm still waiting for Phil to use Sasha a little more instead of Vlad (sliding Kobe over to the SF) -- especially on a night like tonight. The offense struggled in the fourth and Sasha had it going. Defensively, he was a bit foul prone (so was Vlad), but Sasha was active and aggressive, which the team needed. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-4 shooting (all from three) to go with 1 steal and 4 fouls in 11 minutes. The Action: He missed a wide open sideline three at the end of the first quarter. He sank a step-back three in the corner. Second Half: He drained a wing three on the cross-court kickout from Farmar. He sank an open corner three off the LO swing pass.

Phil -- -- The Lakers led 30-28 after the first quarter. Some issues in transition again with the quickness of the Pacers and on the pick and pop with Rasho. Sound familiar?... Too many layups, dunks and open jumpers for the Pacers... Lakers got into the penalty early and the Pacers were shooting FTs at the 7-minute mark. The Lakers, however, earned more trips to the line... Down by 3, Phil called a timeout late in the first half. We set up a three for Vlad and went on a 7-0 run to force the Pacers to call timeout. It ended up being a 9-0 run... The Lakers led 66-61. No D on either side. The Pacers shot 53 percent, the Lakers 55 percent. The Lakers shot 17-24 from the line, the Pacers 4-4...Ireland said the coaches were furious with the team's D at halftime... The Pacers took the lead in the third off some soft Laker D again. A flurry of steals from Ariza and the second unit started to roll -- a 17-0 run to close out the last 2:37 of the third quarter. The Lakers led 101-86... The Lakers let up and had a series of turnovers (6) and the Pacers brought it to 104-96 forcing Phil to call a timeout. He put the starters back in. Didn't matter... He brought in Lamar and Ariza a couple minutes later for Bynum and Vlad... "We started getting lackadaisical," Phil said. Started?... Asked what didn't he like about the defense? "Everything."...

Game Flow -- LINK -- The Lakers finally flexed their defensive muscle in the late third, then relaxed to start the fourth and the Pacers went on double runs with no Laker answer.

Thanks DB for thee write up, surprisingly I didn't take it to hard, its a bump in the road but we have a game tomorrow have to get read for that. We played bad unmotivated defense simple as that, but we can’t expect this team to turn into a defensive team it needs to be over night, its going to take time, and consistent effort. I expect tomorrow that Kobe will come out pissed and drop the fire on Philly. Hopefully this team gets it into its head that all teams are gonna play all out to beat us, so we have to have consistent awareness, communication and rotation on the defensive end to win on the road.

Thanks as always DB

Just the first letdown of what is inevitably going to be several this year. We aren't going to win EVERY game against the teams worse than us. Don't take it too hard everyone.

Tough one.

At least we play tomorrow. Easier to put this game behind us.

I would have bet anything in the world Ford was going to destroy Fisher--that was a forgone conclusion before the game. Looking at the box score though it seems Daniels and Granger struggled from the field. But crap like Murphy and especially Rasho going crazy scoring points at a ridiculously efficient clip? That's horrible. When it was apparent that scrub Rasho was having a miracle day and couldn't miss anything if he tried I don't know why Bynum did go out to meet him--it's not like he's the type to drive to the hole. That last second, freakish tip in pushed us behind BOston unfortunately. I wouldn't be surprised if beating Boston the other day is what gave the Pacers the confidence to stick in there throughout the game.

I suppose all we can hope for now is for L.A. to learn from its mistakes. I'm having a hard time believing this team is actually dedicated to defense as they keep saying they are. I really hope they can bring a consistent effort every night like they did for the first seven games. It kinda worries me that Lakers seem to need a wake-up call to keep themselves focused...it's quite perturbing, actually.

the thing is, Murphy isn't crap. he's a beast on the boards for most of his prime career. he may be white and ugly, but that dude can board

I've been thinking where did Lakers defense go. And I can not figure out any other reason but Lakers just being a lazy defensive team. They show in every game that they can play D.... for about 3-5 minutes. The season started with some 20 or more minutes of playing D. Is it players or is it Phil?

Just sad, we are getting back to the last year playing style that was productive almost all the way. I'd hate to have another season of almost winning it all....

Bynum is our anchor. If he goes out to meet Rasho, he leaves the paint open for TJ Ford to penetrate, which leaves Fish or Farmar on an island by themselves.

TJ Ford gets a layup. Nestorivich hits a jumper. Pick and Choose.
I personally would take the jumper over a high percentage layup.

However, Bynum pwned Nestorivich on the offensive end for 17 points plus putting Nesterovic in foul trouble, so it evened out.

The real reason we lost this game was the offensive rebounds.

This was a real hard loss to swallow. Every loss will be hard but not as much as when you're up by 15 going into the 4th and give it away just like that and lose by 1 at the buzzer by some lucky tip in. This one was really depressing. You would think this team would've learned a few things by now. Thank God they're playing tomorrow.

Great loss for the team. Their offense was clicking. They ran up a huge lead in the 4th. So no excuses here -- they as a team finally paid for their drop in defense the past 2 weeks. Let's see how they respond tomorrow.

I said it early in the season, barring injuries, the only thing that will derail this team is complacency. Tonite was a perfect example of what an arrogant attitude without the concomittant effort looks like: a bunch of guys interested only in scoring who seems surpsied when the other team just won't fold before they might and splendor. Yeah, the ball took some funny bounces, but i also saw a lot of guys going through the motions on D. And if you box out, you should always be first to the ball, funny bounce or not.

On a deeper level, PJ's philosophy of not getting too high or too low during the regular season (so as not to burn-out before the play-offs) almost guarantees games like this. STill, it's disturbing to see the team play with so little heart and effort. As a fan, it shows that all that talk of becomeing a great team who will win via tgheir defense was just so much hot air -- this season' marketing hook. But I've only seen flashes of great D from this team. Unfortunately, that won't win anything.

We've seen Kobe dominate on D (e.g., the Olympics), so I think he has major questions to answer to the team and to himself about why he's dogging it and coasting so much on D this year. Because i think the others follow his lead.

When Ariza is the laker out on the floor who stands head and shoulders above everyone else in terms of effort on the defensive side of the ball, the putative leadership (Kobe and Fish) has a lot to answer for. But, in fact, the entire backcourt seems more interested in getting their shots and looking pretty than they are in locking someone down. they weren't the sole cause for tonite's loss 9the FC couldn't grab a measly rebound, either0, but they are the QB's of this team, and they coughed up a hairball tonite by their nonchalance (Kobe, farmar) and simple lackl of ability 9Fish).

DancingBarry:

You might wanna start giving players (and Phil) grades after each game or a score out of 10 so i can give Phil an F or 1/10 for the BS he pulled tonight.

Vlad getting as many mins as Ariza, taking Andrew out in the 4th Q

Ariza would get a 10. He was a beast

Oh and the Lakers got owned by a front court of Murphy and Rasho. That is pathetic

The poison I pick is Free Throws and laziness on the defensive end.

Drew should of been in there but he wasn't. We really need to tighten up our D as a Unit. Not just Trevor by himself.

Oh well Loss number 2 was bound to happen just sucks that it happened in that fashion

Shake of Off this ridiculous loss and get ready to build up a real winning streak with SOLID DEFENSE!!!

Were still Laker Golden, as we all know how Phil is , they'll hear it all tomorrow and before the game in Philadelphia.

Were 14-2 and we still the best in the west.

SHOOT!! WE STILL THE BEST PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a painful loss and a game we should have won, no doubt. But in the back of all your minds, you knew that another loss was inevitable. It was going to happen sometime. Every good team has bad games once in a while.

I'm going to try to look at the bright side. Hopefully this loss will teach the Lakers a lesson. Hopefully it will teach them that they can't continue to rely on their 2nd half defense to make up for their poor 1st half defense and that they can't count on breaking the game open in the 3rd quarter after a lousy offensive showing in the opening period. That's been the story ever since the 8th or 9th game of the season. Crappy 1st quarter offense and 1st half defense and then they have a really good third period both offensively and defensively and break the game open, and then in the 4th they slack again but hang on. Well, this time it didn't happen. They played like they expected it to happen since that had always been the case prior.

Despite the poor effort by the Lakers, give the Pacers credit. They are not as bad as their 7-10 record might lead you to believe. Danny Granger reminded us all why he's a stud. T.J. Ford is one of the better PGs in the game and his quickness was just too much for old man Fish. This team embarrassed the defending champs on their home court earlier in the season and they came out hard and weren't intimidated by the Western Conference juggernaut that is the Lakers. And remember, the Pacers did all of this without one of their best players, Mike Dunleavy Jr., who averaged nearly 20 PPG last season.

Kobe seemed uninterested in playing defense tonight, he was back to his "make seven shots before I waste my time defending you" defense....Fish can't stop penetration ..and Farmar is worse! Ariza played his usual Inspired game and it was a shame it was wasted. Overall though, this was a TEAM defeat Phil included(can't understand why Trevor and Andrew were on the bench in the middle of the 4th quarter)...the team didnt respect the Pacers enough to play as hard as they were capable of and payed a price for it. Of course we're not going to win every game, but this was a game that was lost because they thought that they were better than they are...a tough lesson but let's hope they took good notes!!

farmar is the worst perimeter defender in the league right now, imo. maybe there is someone worse than he is at slowing down penetration, but i haven't seen it. he basically acts as an escort for his guy to whatever spot on the floor his guy wants to get to.

kobe looks like he's been watching ariza hawking all these balls and he wants to get in on the party. he's basically completely ignoring his man at times to go for suicide steals, leaving the entire defense exposed and vulnerable when he doesn't pick the ball. and watching kobe not bothering to close out when he's well rested from low minutes and he doesn't have to carry the full burden of the offense is just depressing.

Kobe's defense sucked tonight, a very low IQ game from Kobe, too many one on ones and ball watching while the Rush and Granger were draining 3s all night, I hate it when Kobe plays like this, he needs to respect his opposition.

I hate that they lost this game the way they did. I really don't think the Laker defense has been as strong recently as it was in the beginning. By the way thanks for the recap DB.

The D wasn't there. Bad effort, worse execution except the third quarter run. They have to play d or we can kiss that banner goodbye come June. Have to execute. Have to play 48 minutes. Ugly loss. SO glad they play again tonight so we can put it all behind us PROVIDED they come out intense.
