My roommate and I said the EXACT same thing.

Besides the 2 hot chicks in that brothel scene, the dialogue was great. This episode was Little Finger's episode (stole the show - that jerk) lol
I also thought the exchange between Greyjoy and the brigand woman was also a good scene.
Damn things are not looking good for the Starks. (having not read the books)

Can anyone explain to me further detail the different divisions of the nightwatch - ranger, steward, and builder? significance?

They each just have their separate duties. The rangers are the fighting branch that go out on patrol etc. Builders maintain the Castle Black and the other towers.

Jon got stuck as a steward to Lord Commander Mormont. He obviously wanted to be out in the field. Sam opened his eyes to the fact that Mormont probably hand selected him to groom him for a leadership role.

ahh ok so no special backstory or history there. thanks for the info.

I like how the Dartraquis have really come to force as well.

Drago's speech about getting "The Iron Chair" for his queen was great as well.

Between the accents and having never seen it actually spelled, who knew?

Hopefully it will work out better than his promise to deliver a golden crown to her brother.

I know the scene was supposed to be horrific, but I couldn't help picturing Viserys going, "I luf goooolllllddd!" like his fah-zhah.

Hopefully, we get to see why the Dothraki are so feared soon.

I didn't realize til this episode that "Khal" was Drogo's title and not his first name.

Best line of the season thus far:

“There is only one god and his name is Death,” said Syrio. “And there’s only one thing we say to Death: ‘Not today.’”

Was I the only one that thought "TROPIC THUNDER!" when they saw Syrio.

I swear, I had to google it to make sure it WASN'T Robert Downey Jr.

Yeah you can tell there are certainly elements of the Mongolian empire that influenced the portrayal of the Dothraki. Nomadic horsemen that lived on the plains that razed their enemies and fired arrows from horseback.

Khal = Khan ?

yup I was surprised, the very first episode I wasn't totally sold on the princess and Drogo's acting ability. But they've done a good job. Kudos to whoever was in charge of casting. Dave Navarro was pretty good.

I was doing a little research on the show and there's an unaired pilot episode which featured another actress (Tamzin Merchant) as Daenerys Targaryen. The producers replaced the director and re-cast the part with Emilia Clarke for the "Winter is Coming" first episode.

The stream I was using to watch tonight's episode went out 15 minutes into it. Now I have to wait for someone to upload it later.

Interesting. My wife and I have a very good friend who is pretty high up on the production ladder for the show. Might have to ask her if she has a copy of that I can borrow.

Spoiler Alert...

You know you're an idiot if your hair is cut to just an inch or two and you're trying to compete against Drogo, whose hair is almost to his knee.

Utterly stooopid.

Great episode....to people that have read the books...

Love the HBo interpretation thus far but why are the wolves so neglected.

They are so phenomenally important in this series on both a thematic and storyline role.

There were quite a few scenes that could have been omitted from the show. Great scenes, true and I don't want to identify them (just read the books), but as far as pushing the storyline forward didn't really do anything yet they chose to make up these scenes completely and add them in on one hand and omit such an important part of the book on the othe...Simply put, a few scenes were added in to further drive home the status of certain relationships and characters While cool and all, completely unnecessary and it seemed like it meant omitting some others.

I'm ALL for picking and choosing scenes for time considerations but flat out writing new and COMPLETELY unnecessary scenes for fvck knows why and omitting some others. Just seems an odd decision since they hit a home run on just about every decision thus far.

If this series goes on past season 1, there's no way the producers can ignore this aspect of the storyline. They're just too integral.

As said, the wolves were hard to work with. There are also some things that just don't translate well from books to TV/movies. One of them would be Ghost as a silent wolf. Think about the scene in this last episode and how bad it would be if the dog was quiet. When he was circling around and jumping at the door, does he have to go pee? Is he just restless? Having him growl ominously shows the viewer that there is definitely something bad going on in the tower.

Anyway, GRRM wrote the last episode so I have to think anything that wasn't following the book storyline is intended. He's said that making the cast older on the show is something he wishes he could go back and "fix" in his books, so all of these minor changes don't bother me too much. Book scenes that rely on inner dialogue especially don't work well on TV, so they have to show them in another form. I really liked the way they showed Drogo getting his cut. He's a complete badass but you never see him fight in the book. I think that scene (youtube) works a lot better than him just showing up with a cut one day after a battle. Also, his speech in the previous episode was money.

About the only scene not in the book that I think went a little far was the one with Littlefinger and his whores in the last episode. Not that I have a problem with whores or titties, but it went on for 4 minutes and just seemed out of character for him. Why would he tell his life story to some whores that just showed up from the North?
