All-Time Starting 5: Los Angeles Lakers
by Tyriq Butler - todaysfastbreak.com
With the Vegas Summer League officially over, it was time for Shaquille O’Neal and Scottie Pippen to give NBA fans something to talk about during the dry period. They’re two of the top-50 greatest players ever, so when they speak, we listen.
Shaq caught my attention with his role as GM in this conversation. It’s interesting that he pretty much penciled himself in as the starting power forward. He’s obviously fully aware that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the greatest Lakers center of all time, and that’s not up for discussion.
So what would the all-time Lakers starting five look like?
Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Elgin Baylor, O’Neal and Abdul-Jabbar take the floor for the Lakers in front of a sold out crowd in the Staples Center. This exercise is designed to be intriguing and appealing. Those are arguably the five greatest players in the franchise’s history with each player being special and exhibiting a uniqueness that makes them admirable.
The glamor and prestige associated with the Los Angeles Lakers makes it a tough place to play in. You have to be an individual devoid of any fears playing in the spotlight. If you’re not built for that life, it’ll eat you alive.

The Lakers need Byron Scott to evolve with them
by Drew Garrison - silverscreenandroll.com
The Los Angeles Lakers may have tacked on a talented lottery pick in D'Angelo Russell as compensation for hitting rock bottom, but that's just one piece of a very muddled puzzle. Lakers Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Jim Buss needs the franchise he leads to be competitive again, and has a two-year window to slide through before he meets the buzzsaw of a deadline he set for himself. It's going to take an incredible turnaround for the Lakers to accomplish that, but the next piece they may look at is Byron Scott.
The Lakers are already slowly making changes. They went with the dynamic backcourt player, not taking the safe route by going with the "other" franchise big man on draft night. They added a "liaison" to help handle ideas between the coaching staff and an analytics department that's headed by Mark Madsen. The Lakers are putting up, at the very least, the appearances of a team taking steps into the present after being called out for being the Fred Flintstones of the NBA.

Learn To Love Kobe Bryant At Power Forward
by Jackson Sanders - hoopshabit.com
I get it, Los Angeles Lakers fans.
You think Byron Scott has officially lost his mind. Or, perhaps it was simply confirmation of that fact when he recently stated that Kobe Bryant would see some time at power forward.
Scott’s reputation as a head coach in the NBA is in tatters, in the eyes of the Laker faithful at the very least. In his first year at the helm he pulled moves like starting Ronnie Price, benching Ed Davis for Robert Sacre, and, my favorite dead horse to beat, starting Ryan Kelly as anything other than a stretch big.
The head coach was not perfect when it came to dealing with Kobe Bryant, either. In the early going, the offense was simply “Kobe-Or-Bust”, leaving the fragile veteran to chuck horrific shots as time ran out on his tentative teammates. Bryant’s minutes were uncapped, adding to his already tremendous workload.

Lakers Must Add Small Forward Depth Before Next Season
by Ehran Khan - bleacherreport.com
The Los Angeles Lakers turned over much of their roster this offseason, constructing a new roster on the fly.
Whether the new pieces fit and the team functions remains to be seen, but the front office did manage to stock up at every position—except for small forward.
Currently, L.A.'s depth chart has Nick Young listed as the No. 1 small forward, with rookie Anthony Brown as his backup.
The Lakers are probably going to want some extra insurance for the position.
For starters, you don't want to be starting Young. As a ball-stopper whose best attribute is volume scoring, he's not a great fit alongside Kobe Bryant and another high-usage guard like D'Angelo Russell or Jordan Clarkson. Plus, Julius Randle is going to need his touches this year as well.

Jordan Clarkson is hopeful the Lakers can make the playoffs
by Matt Moore - cbssports.com
The Lakers are battling an expectations problem. Most teams that finished with one of the four worst records in the league are just looking to not be terrible. Instead, because they're the Lakers, there's hope of them actually being good, immediately.
Point guard Jordan Clarkson joined NBA Sirius XM Radio Wednesday and said that the Lakers have hopes of actually making the playoffs.

Kevin Seraphin is still a free agent and three teams are interested
by Jorge Castillo - washingtonpost.com
It’s been nearly three weeks since the NBA’s moratorium was lifted and handshake agreements between free agents and teams could become official pacts. A slew of players signed with teams in the ensuing days, many capitalizing on the heaps of money flung around. Roster spots are dwindling.
Kevin Seraphin figured to be one of the players to benefit from the bloated market and find a home relatively quickly – not necessarily with the first wave of big men but in the next tier after the heavyweights (i.e., LaMarcus Aldridge and DeAndre Jordan) were courted and snagged.
The former first-round draft pick has been frustratingly inconsistent in his five NBA campaigns – all with the Washington Wizards — but he is still a 25-year-old with intriguing potential who wasn’t given steady playing time the last two seasons.
“We stay on him because we know how good he can be, and I think sometimes he doesn’t realize how talented he really is,” Wizards guard Bradley Beal said of the 6-foot-10 Seraphin in January. “I tell him all the time, ‘I’m going to give you the ball, and in my opinion no one can guard you in the post.’ ”
Seraphin, however, is still a free agent. The (possibly former) Wizards big man is one of the top players left on the market and the Wizards, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers are interested in his services, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

Tarik Black of the Lakers Appears to Be Shrinking
by Stephen Douglas - thebiglead.com
Tarik Black, the Los Angeles Lakers’ “big man,” is shrinking.
After averaging 6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 0.4 blocks as an undrafted rookie with the Lakers and Rockets, Black has been demoted to a lesser height. While he played his rookie year at 6-foot-11, Black will enter his second year in the league a full two-inches shorter.
This Rant Sports article from late December sums his problems:

Analyzing Potential Fit for Kevin Seraphin in LA
by Matt Fitzgerald - bleacherreport.com
The Los Angeles Lakers have certainly bolstered their frontcourt this offseason, landing All-Star Roy Hibbert in a trade, signing savvy veteran Brandon Bass in free agency and drafting Larry Nance Jr. in the first round.
Although the power forward position figures to be well-stocked with the latter two and thanks to Julius Randle's return from injury, the depth behind Hibbert is scarce. That's why past Washington Wizards reserve Kevin Seraphin is an intriguing fit for the Lakers.
Sheridan Hoops' Michael Scotto reports LA is interested in Seraphin, along with the Wizards and New York Knicks.
Seraphin is just 25 years old and has averaged only 16.4 minutes in five seasons with Washington. His per 36-minute numbers are nevertheless respectable at 14.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks, per Basketball-Reference.com.

Seraphins 36m per is really solid 14/8 and almost 2BPG he would be a huge upgrade for the Lakers especially if he makes significant improvement... |

Yeah, if you like getting .82 points per possession... |

Jordan Clarkson's contract to guarantee Saturday
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com
The Lakers face one of their easiest decisions of the summer on Saturday, the deadline to cut second-year guard Jordan Clarkson.
Clarkson, selected 46th overall in the 2014 NBA draft, is under contract for the 2015-16 season, but for a non-guaranteed $845,059.
According to the terms of his contract, Clarkson's contract locks in for the year, provided the Lakers do not waive him on or by Aug. 1.
Naturally, the Lakers will keep one of last season's best rookies, as confirmed to The Times by a team spokesman.
