(Woke is the ‘new Black’: Erykah Badu on music, MAGA, evolving, real hip hop and ‘A.I. ancestors’)

Top Republicans are attacking what they call “woke” politics, and even passing laws designed to “stop” a supposed woke agenda. The singer who first brought that concept to the culture, in “Master Teacher,” Erykah Badu, reflects on social justice, culture and “woke politics” today – one of several topics the four-time Grammy winner tackles in this extended discussion with MSNBC anchor and music obsessive Ari Melber. Badu discusses her singing, deep links to hip hop, personal evolution, spirituality and approach to the music industry and business in general, including her new cannabis line with “Cookies.” She also reacts to earlier moments and videos from her career, and engages with an “assessment” of her work that an artificial intelligence chat bot generated by drawing on public writings about her music and its message. This in-depth discussion is the newest installment of “Mavericks with Ari Melber,” a series of interviews with artists, musicians and cultural icons (msnbc.com/mavericks)

I just wish everyone voted their economic self-interest. Wealth and income inequality dwarfs every other issue in our country right now IMO. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better”
This is what happens when you vote for Republicans. They appoint right-wing hack Federalist Society judges who want to take everyone back a hundred years no matter how many people suffer and die. I'm sure this will be challenged up to the Supreme Court so the right-wing hacks there can put their stamp of approval. In the mean time the ruling goes into effect unless someone gets an injunction. Live free and die! Mostly die!
This includes pregnancy care, cancer screenings, regular check-ups, birth control, etc etc. They are coming for every last bit of your personal rights and dignity.

Breaking @MSNBC : A federal judge just struck down Affordable Care Act provisions that require health insurers to provide some free preventive care services.
The ruling could jeopardize coverage nationwide for people relying on Obamacare for services like cancer screenings.

A Manhattan grand jury voted to indict Donald J. Trump on Thursday for his role in paying hush money to a porn star, according to five people with knowledge of the matter, a historic development that will shake up the 2024 presidential race and forever mark him as the nation’s first former president to face criminal charges.
An indictment will likely be announced in the coming days. By then, prosecutors working for the district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, will have asked Mr. Trump to surrender and to face arraignment on charges that remain unknown for now.
Mr. Trump has for decades avoided criminal charges despite persistent scrutiny and repeated investigations, creating an aura of legal invincibility that the vote to indict now threatens to puncture.
His actions surrounding his 2020 electoral defeat are now the focus of a separate federal investigation, and a Georgia prosecutor is in the final stages of an investigation into Mr. Trump’s attempts to reverse the election results in that state.
Quote:
The vote to indict, the product of a nearly five-year investigation, kicks off a new and volatile phase in Mr. Trump’s post-presidential life as he makes a third run for the White House. And it could throw the race for the Republican nomination — which he leads in most polls — into uncharted territory.
Mr. Bragg is the first prosecutor to lead an indictment of Mr. Trump. He is now likely to become a national figure enduring a harsh political spotlight.

Manhattan grand jury votes to indict Trump.
Just one of these had to break through. Glad that Bragg finally did it. This may open up the floodgates and the other investigations might now follow suit. Glad to see American justice - at least for today - still exists. _________________ LakersGround's Terms of Service
Mr. Trump will be the first former president to face criminal charges. The precise charges are not yet known, but the case is focused on a hush-money payment to a porn star during his 2016 campaign.

Attorneys for Donald Trump have been informed of the indictment of Trump by the Manhattan Grand Jury. Reports are that Mar-a-Lago was caught unaware. The particular charges have not been revealed and sources do not know if Trump's team has been advised of the charges.

Even though this is just a crack in the door and there's a long way to go -- I didn't know I would be this happy just to get to this point.

Love it! I wonder if Bragg deliberately leaked that news about the upcoming break for the grand jury as payback for all the crap Trump's been posting about him.

Trump has been committing crimes his entire adult life and this is the *first* time there has been a criminal indictment against him. No matter how this plays out, that's not for nothing.
MSNBC saying there are felony charges (per their contact at NYT).
That's great. I think he could get to 1-4 years in prison. _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold.

I doubt these charges result in prison time. Conviction itself is going to be hugely difficult. Trump has spent his lifetime insulating himself from culpability by setting up fall guys and deflecting direct personal responsibility. I’m sure it’s no different here. His defense will be that it was all Cohen’s work and he had no knowledge of, or direct participation in the way the payments were made. But even if he is convicted, a former President is not going to be sent to prison for something like this. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Step 1 Indicted. Step 2 Set a trial date. It will likely be a year or more before Trump faces a jury. Step 3 trial. Step 4 adjudication. I may be 180 out. That's a layman's assessment of the process. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

This is the first time a former President has been indicted. Why not the first one sent to prison? You're probably right but 1 precedent has been set why not 2? This is unchartered territory. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

New York will send him to prison. Likely they will work something out with the DOJ to put him in Club Fed instead of Attica or Sing Sing. _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns".

Well, I think there was skepticism even this day would never come. Says something it did. I'll remain optimistic that this charge (or one of the others that is surely coming at this point) will do the trick.
The irony for me is that, out of self political interest, I don't even want him in jail. I think the Dems are in a much better position in every election (not just national elections) if he is the candidate in 2024. Still, I want the rule of law to prevail, and I hope it does here regardless of the political ramifications. _________________ LakersGround's Terms of Service
