WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. announced plans on Tuesday to provide an additional $625 million in military aid to Ukraine, a package that includes additional advanced rocket systems credited with helping the country’s military gain momentum in its war with Russia.

President Joe Biden provided details on the latest package—which includes four High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, known as HIMARS, 200 mine resistant vehicles, hundreds of thousands of rounds of artillery and mortar ammunition—in a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Vice President Kamala Harris joined the leaders on Tuesday's call.

They have only been able to give them 4 HIMARS at a time up to this point. They're still far from it, but Zelenskyy wants at least 100 as they are the most destructive weapon for materiel and troops yet (along w/ US intelligence). They're also simple enough for 18 yr old lads to quickly learn how to operate them. The defense contractors likey because they've been getting good press as have the Javelin launchers. They've sold HIMARS to the Aussies, UAE, Singapore, Estonia, and others already. May be more buyers out there after this conflict.

They’ve given Ukraine 16 himars and 10 older similar items (forget the name I think m270 or such)

https://www.newsweek.com/half-ukraine-tank-fleet-captured-russians-1749866]

Quote:
The ministry said on Friday that Ukraine had likely captured at least 440 Russian main battle tanks (MBTs), and around 650 other armored vehicles since the start of the invasion on February 24. It calculated that "over half of Ukraine's currently fielded tank fleet may be captured vehicles from the Russians."

It's estimated Ukraine has more Russian tanks and IFVs than they had at the start of the war.

President Zelensky says the world must act now to stop Russia's nuclear threat.

Speaking to the BBC, Ukraine's leader warns that Russian officials have begun to "prepare their society" for the possible use of nuclear weapons - although he does not believe the country is ready to use them.

It comes as Ukraine's army has been making big gains, recapturing large swathes of territory from Russia in a major counter-offensive.

M270s are the Gulf War era predecessors to HIMARS, but the rocket pods are apparently interchangeable w/ HIMARS and the electronics in the older variants are probably upgraded to current spec given that's how they extend service life of aircraft. I have to think Biden/advisors have their own number limits on any one weapon system they agree to give to Ukraine. Money factors into the equation of course, but I don't know if we'd give Zelenskyy anything he asked for by specific quantity even if the money was there. What's the line they don't wanna cross to offend Putin? Whatever that line might be, it's probably what they think is commensurate w/ Putin plotting with our enemies to kill US troops in recent engagements.

This is humiliating for Putin. It's also his birthday. How will he respond?

It’s apparently the best supply/retreat option for the Russians in the area. There’s a road to the North and the port still functions, but this makes holding that part of the south east much harder.

This is a very, very worrisome time, as Ukrainians continue to push back against Russia, in a very, very effective fashion.”

If Putin uses a nuclear weapon, it will probably be the end of the war in Ukraine . . . but not in his favor.

He'd have to be really desperate and stupid to go the nuclear route.

Using a nuclear weapon should be a worldwide concern. I don't think Vladimir is at the nuclear use point yet. If he gets there I hope whoever has to launch a nuclear attack uses discretion. Does Russia have stop gaps or can Putin launch at will? As long as he's in office I'll have concerns.

Quote:
Light traffic has resumed on Russia's only bridge to Crimea, following a huge blast brought down sections of the roadway.

The blast on Europe's longest bridge - a symbol of Russia's annexation of the peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 - killed three people, Russian investigators said.

Russia's foreign ministry published a video on Saturday, seemingly showing cars using the bridge.

President Vladimir Putin has now ordered the country's Federal Security Service to oversee the key connector to the occupied peninsula.

It looks like there was enough damage that Russia won't be able to send heavy equipment like tanks and artillery over the bridge for awhile.

('Russian attack' on city claimed by Moscow kills 17 people - BBC News)

Quote:
At least 17 people have been killed by Russian missile strikes on the south-eastern city of Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine's defence ministry has said.

Dozens more were wounded, and several residential buildings destroyed.

The city is under Ukrainian control, but it is part of a region that Russia says it annexed last month.

Zaporizhzhia has been hit repeatedly in recent weeks, as Russia hits back at urban areas after suffering defeats in the south and north-east of Ukraine.

Don't think anybody thought that Ukraine would put up the resistance they did. Look at the military strength on paper and Russia looked like they had an overwhelming advantage. What Putin didn't count on was Ukrainian citizens were fighting for their right to simply exist while the Russian population were probably not keen on sacrificing themselves for Putin's vision.
