Still a solid shooter. One thing he seems to have worked on is coming off screens and firing up a jump shot, it will serve him well. He's a very niche player, essentially his role in the offense should be the same as a Duncan Robinson or Ryan Anderson. Coming off the screen for a three or jumper, and setting yourself up moving off ball for open three point opportunities. Asking him to do anything else is a determent to his game and capability.

I did like that baseline drive and dish in the highlights.

Yeah I did too, but at this current point in his career or at least with the consistent skillset he's shown, the last thing we want him to do outside of summer league where you can practice this stuff, is try to break someone down off the dribble in an actual NBA game.

If he can't play within the team construct, he's gonna be overseas sooner rather than later.

I think Swider makes the roster this year.... 6'9 can shoot and stretch the floor.

He drives me crazy in summer league with his decision making, but his jumper is $$$ and he'd just be asked to space (and maybe run off screens) on the roster. Defensively tho, yikes. I don't have a good sense of if his offense is good enough to justify some minutes despite his defense (in the regular season). Isn't Duncan Robinson a really bad defender? Is Swider worse?

His defense is just atrocious, and he literally can't do anything on offense except shoot 3's lol. If he lines up a 2, it's not a good shot and I have no expectation that it's going in unless he gets to the rim for something uncontested that was created by a teammate. If he makes any kind of non-basic pass, it's probably not going to end well. I'm honestly much more intrigued with Hodge.

It's funny how -- minus the statement on defense -- what you said applies to Hodge equally as well lol.

Ha, it does, but he can play some D. That's such a major difference.

Totally. Hodge's defense is pretty nice. Love his anticipation and quick hands. I can see him having a place in the NBA in the KCP archetype. Well that's the upside, he could also be a washed up Avery Bradley type.

The question is how well the 3 ball translates at the NBA level; I think his defense is at least adequate (hard to make stronger claims than that because summer league competition)

Swider took all of his NBA character talent points and invested them in shooting. His 3-ball is so sweet that I'm surprised when it hits anything but net. That said, he left no talent points for D, rebounding, passing, dribbling, speed, anticipation, or any of the other things that might keep him on the floor. If he could bump any of those other skills up to half-way decent he'd get an NBA contract. As it stands, the most I can currently see is him being subbed in for a last-second 3 situation, a la Matt Ryan. C'mon Cole! Put in the work!

I totally get that he can shoot, but this is a shining example of why you can't just have players who only excel at one thing. He must expand his game and work on his off ball awareness.

Swider makes some bonehead plays, but he seems to try hard at least and he was grabbing rebounds which seems to be a skill that escapes many of our rotation players.

I can see him offering something at the end of the bench. The man can shoot.

I like Swider's effort on defense and on the glass, but I don't think he has what it takes to be passable as a defender. Offensively, while he's a sniper, the shot selection has been iffy, and he hasn't done well attacking closeouts.

Totally agree. I love his hustle but don't think his lack of size (4) or speed (3) allows him to translate to the league. Also, my view is skewed as i haven't watched him much... and the games i have he hasn't shot well. I must be the jinx.

As long as he proves himself to be a good three point shooter and a solid mover off ball there's a place for him in the league.

You dreading the "Cole Swider has agreed to a deal with the Golden State Warriors." tweet?
