So tired of the same things over and over:

Quote:
1) Most of the team batting around .200
2) Starters can't go 5ip
3) BP is so shaky
4) Every team steals bases vs. us
5) We don't steal bases
6) Defense is shaky

Juan Soto's pretty hot right now:

5/5 last night
2/3 today

So, 7/8 last 2 games. Here are his numbers now:

Quote:
.271 avg
.424 obp
.486 slg
.910 ops

Here are his numbers 2 days ago:

Quote:
.248 avg
.411 obp
.466 slg
.877 slg

Looks like the Padres struck gold by signing Gary Sanchez from the EDD office:

Quote:
10 games
32 AB
5 HR
11 RBI
.289 avg
.333 obp
.737 slg
1.070 ops

Corbin Carroll's 8/111 extension is looking like it might be the deal of the century for the Dbacks.

After an 0-for-4 tonight, Mike Trout is down to .258, the same average as Mookie Betts. And Betts' OBP is 7 points higher and his SLG is a whopping 53 points higher.

Baseball Reference WAR: Betts 2.6, Trout 2.2
Fangraphs WAR: Betts 2.7, Trout 2.1

Looks like Trout's no longer close to being the best player in MLB.

Interesting. I love numbers so let's take a look at what the D'backs saved with this extension.

He's a rookie this yr, so they had 6 years of control over him.

They bought out 2 of his free agent yrs + they have an option for a 3rd free agent yr for $28M (or $5M buyout).

So, potentially 9 yrs for $134M or (8 yrs $111M as mentioned).

...............................................

First, what's the most that a player can make in their first 6 yrs?

Let's take a look at Juan Soto as a super 2 for example.

(I don't think Corbin Carroll qualifies for super 2 status since he only played 32 games last yr. For comparison's sake, Soto played 118 games in his first partial non-full year)

Quote:
Year 1: min - $600k
Year 2: min - $650k
Year 3: arbitration ($8.5M)
Year 4: arbitration ($17M)
Year 5: arbitration ($23M)
Year 6: arbitration (~$32M)

Total: $81.7M for his first 6 yrs (with super 2 status)

Note: Estimating Soto's arbitration award for next year.

.........................................

So, let's find an example of a recent super star who didn't have super 2 status (and stayed healthy all 6 years):

I think Aaron Judge is a very good comparison. He only played 27 games his first partial non-full year. Carroll played 32 games. Judge didn't get super 2 status and neither will Carroll:

Quote:
Year 1: min - $550k
Year 2: min - $620k
Year 3: min - $680k
Year 4: arbitration ($8.5M)
Year 5: arbitration ($10.2M)
Year 6: arbitration ($19M)

Total: $39.55M for his first 6 yrs

.....................................

So, getting back to Carroll, we know that his last 3 free agent years were bought out for $28M per year. (Last one being an option year w/ a $5M buyout).

https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/corbin-carroll-30414/

So his first 6 yrs are worth $50M. It should come out close to the following:

Quote:
Year 1: min - $700k
Year 2: min - $750k
Year 3: min - $800k
Year 4: arbitration ($10M)
Year 5: arbitration ($15M)
Year 6: arbitration ($22.75M)

Total: $50M for his first 6 yrs

How much would he potentially be worth 6 years from now? $45M? Let's say $45M.

$45M x 3 = $135M

D'backs paid: $28M x 3 = $84M

So, they ended up saving $51M potentially. But they took on alot of risks because they guaranteed him $111M when they had control over him for 6 yrs on non-guaranteed 1 yr deals.

Angels young fireballer Ben Joyce, who was just recently called up, had to leave the game today in the 6th inning after experiencing numbness in his fingers and forearm. That doesn't sound good at all. Could be another guy trying to break the radar gun on every pitch who succumbs to injury.

Yeah, throwing it 105mph isn't good for the arm.

Also worth noting that Ohtani has been pretty ordinary over his last few starts, and his fastball velo was even down a little bit tonight. He gave up 3 ER in 5 IP and his ERA has ticked up over 3.30 now.

As a hitter, he's sporting a .919 OPS.

Our guys are chasing while they are not. It's going to be a tough game to win.

Also they are making contact with Miller's heaters. I think it's bothering him so he is tip toeing around the strike zone hoping to get some chases.

He needs to challenge them. They are not chasing.

Edit: Soon as I say this Castellanos chases. LOL
