Congrats Frank. You deserve another shot after the way Pelinka treated you.

With Paul, Durant and Booker, Frank is not going to have to do much offensive planning. Just get a defense that everyone can buy into and start the season.

Interesting hire. Defensive specialist with no defensive players. I don't know if I want him to succeed. I have to believe Ayton will be a nice trade chip for him.

Or he might get more defense out of Ayton. And the team overall.

I agree he needs a couple of defensive minded players to round out the roster though.

I liked Vogel. Not surprised he got a solid HC job. Was disappointed he was made the scapegoat with the Lakers.

Not thrilled he is going to a Division rival but wish him well.

Yeah, the rationale really makes sense. The offense will take care of itself. Their My turn, Your turn offense is still good enough to generate a ton of points just by virtue of their talent. Frank can just focus on the defense. That's not too different than what he did successfully with us.

Yep! We didn't personally make the decision to let him go so ignominiously but I still felt terrible the way he got done so dirty.

Yeah, first thing that jumped at me, the Lakers only gave him 1 year extension (I think rumor was at 4-5M). He now has that PLUS 31M in guaranteed money. He would have never gotten those years and money from Jeanie/LA/this FO. So for him and his fam, good for him. He's a good dude, seen a lot of his press and overall stuff during the Laker tenure, really struck me as a solid coach who does his players solid. Not a genius, but defensively very good and good at making playoff adjustments.

No idea how he ends up doing in PHX, but as a former Laker champion, just like with any other former Laker champion, I'm happy for him.

Good for Frank. I like him personally because he's a positive man but he keeps it real, which are two qualities a good leader must have.

Still, I hope his team suffers a brutal defeat to the Lakers in next year's playoffs.

Seemed like a great guy and a solid coach..Maybe he can get Booker to do something more defensively. Glad he landed a nice role, he seems deserving of it.

This is actually kinda scary... We know Vogel doesn't mess up when he has the pieces. He's got KD and Booker, if he gets Ayton on the same page, watch out. Still can't believe what we did to this man. Dismantled his championship roster, blamed him for Westbrook not fitting in, then fired him. Then ultimately blamed Westbrook for Westbrook. LOL! Thinking back, do you know how clownish, how amateurish that looks? You said Vogel was the problem! So you fired him, then the very next year, you said well maybe Westbrook is the problem after all.

I agree. The FO looks like a bunch of clowns.

I give the FO credit for getting the right players this year.

But I think that their decision to fire Vogel will potentially bite them in the ass.

What is sad that when we look back at this period where the Lakers had both AD and Lebron, it will be a disappointment if they do not win another championship. What is even more pathetic is that we only made only one finals.

This will be an indictment on the FO.

It can’t even really be called a disappointment when Wilt and West produced one ring only.

There also the fact that Russ/Harden, Kawhi/George, KD/Kyrie came that same summer and they outlasted them all and won

Frank was straight up scapegoated after Rob went and traded away all of his role players for Russ.

Glad to see him getting another shot. Just wish it wasn't with a division rival.

Don't forget, in the championship season, the Lakers defensive ratings was #3 in the league.

Now, you may say that's because we had Dwight, McGee, Rondo, Green, etc.

Then in 2020-21, without the aforementioned players, the Lakers' defensive ratings jumped to #1 in the league.

Credits of the strong defense should go to Vogel.

However, after the Westbrick trade, not only the offense was horrible, the defense also plummeted. In a lot of games I watched, the game was over by half-time, trailing by ~20 points.

Where the heck was the defense?

Congrats to Vogel.

He was (correctly) against the Westbrook move, and his relationship with WB reputedly got him fired: https://www.si.com/nba/lakers/news/lakers-frank-vogels-handling-of-russell-westbrook-played-in-role-in-his-firing-bw2021

Quote:
"When the decision was made to fire Vogel, sources say his handling of Westbrook and the inability to find a way to make him a more productive part of the program were among the factors that played a big part. There was a strong sense that it was on Vogel to make the Westbrook experiment work, and the fact that it didn’t led to questions about whether Westbrook had been put in a position to succeed. That sure smells like the hope of a Russ revival to me."

Wow.

Well, he loves drop coverage, they will defend the paint and the 3; i wonder how he will handle “rotations”

But a good hire.

Best of luck to Frank, the scapegoat to the Westbrook era.

Wonder if Avery Bradley will now have a job in the NBA again...

Great pickup by the Suns, good to see Vogel land on his feet. He served the Lakers very well, coached our team to a title, this guy warrants respect.

There's some articles online about how Vogel might try to get Phil Handy to the Suns. Sure hope that doesn't happen.

Lakers insider Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times has now floated the possibility of the Suns poaching a few key members of the LA's current staff now that their former boss has signed with the Suns:

“Phil Handy, development coach/assistant Jon Pastorek and video coordinator Dru Anthrop all were retained after Vogel’s dismissal and are obviously names to watch as Vogel assembles his staff,” Woike wrote.

Excellent. Love ya Frank, but ya can't have Phil. (if other people knew about his contract already that's great I didn't and I've been wondering about this since Vogel became the new Suns HC)

Per Ganglani (Phil is apparently doing some kind of media event in Manila)

. (@) naveenganglani asked if Handy is considering joining Frank Vogel’s staff in Phoenix.

Handy: “Don’t believe everything you read. I’m under contract with the Lakers for the next two seasons. When Darvin came on, I signed a three-year extension. So I’m in Laker land baby.”

Now that I am satisfied there is no possibility of him taking Phil Handy it is no longer Lakers relevant. Lol
