Had just graduated and was living on the Jersey Shore that summer. I was the only Lakers fan, but my with friends were all from Philly, so they hated hated Boston too.
Epic. But man, at the time, there were two seconds left, and when Bird slipped Free for one more try at it, I was more than half-convinced that last shot was gonna go in.
I appreciate the fantastic history of that shot. I was watching the game. I've been blessed to watch a lot of historic moments live. I actually watched the game when Milwaukee ended our still standing 33 game winning streak. Thanks for posting.
This moment is the difference between 3-1 and 2-2. 2-2, with HCA, is not the end of the world.
Robert Horry's shot is the difference between 2-2 and 1-3. At 1-3, with 2 games scheduled at Cow-town, our 3-peat dream was almost over.
There are also two more greater moments in the Showtime era.
1) Michael Cooper's shot in game 5 vs Utah in 1988. Had he missed that shot, the Lakers would have lost game 5. Our back-to-back dream would likely have ended in game 6 in Utah.
2) Kareem's 2 FTs in game 6 vs Detroit. Actually, the "single greatest moment" was Laimbeer's "bump" on Kareem that was called for 2 FTs. Without that foul, the Lakers would have lost game 6 and the back-to-back dream would have been over.

I beg to differ.

Must have missed the anniversary threads for those moments. _________________ Darvin
Great moment. How did Bird get so open? That's the one guy you don't want to have the ball with a clean look. Triumph almost turned into tragedy.
I think the greatest moment was the Horry shot. Lakers likely lose the series if he doesn't make that. And it was so improbable that the ball would be slapped out to him.

That is the single greatest moment in Lakers history, to finally beat the Boston Celtics. West, Baylor, Wilt, and the Lakers organization were able to finally exercise their demons.
I had it taped on VHS and must have watched it dozens of times. I remember the ending song was Steve Winwood's "Back in the Highlife Again". Every time I hear that song, I smile.

"to finally beat the Boston Celtics"?
This Magic junior skyhook happened in 1987. The Lakers first beat the Celtics for the championship in 1985...
