22 Threes... Maybe it was the new jerseys. Maybe it was the new in-season tournament floor. Maybe it was the law of averages catching up. But the Lakers finally hit their threes.

Out of the gates, they sank 11-20 in the first half -- finally leading at the half for the first time this season. It was a dominating 74-51 half by the Lakers.

I’d like to think some of it was the process. The Lakers have been getting good shots and have been playing with purpose to set those up. They finally got them to drop tonight against the Grizzlies, tying a franchise record in makes with 22-35 from three.

They didn’t quite cruise in the second half, but kept the Grizzlies from staying connected. Bron started sleepwalking to start the second half with multiple turnovers. A flagrant closeout by Reddish, and they gave up a 6-point possession -- a 14-3 run in just 2 minutes.

The Lakers rallied back to push the lead back up to 30. They were able to rest their stars in the fourth as they went on to the 134-107 win. Good point differential in the tournament.

LeBron -- -- Good to have him back after the team had to run AD extra minutes in the last one. His perimeter shot was dropping early as he hit a couple of threes, a pull-up from midrange and a hanging fade in the paint in the first half on his way to 10 points on 4-9 shooting. He came out the second half on cruise control with a series of turnovers on passes and a fumbled dribble. That allowed the Grizzlies to cut the lead in half before he answered with a three. Love seeing just 23 minutes for him in a blowout win. Good job by Ham keeping the bench going in that fourth quarter to make sure nothing silly happened. We've got a lot of games in a short period here. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-11 shooting (3-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a +15.

Davis -- -- Dominant first half with 15 points on 5-8 shooting, 8 boards and 3 blocks. A good chunk of the scoring was on hustle plays -- putbacks or rim runs to get an advantage. The Grizzlies have a couple of bigs in their starting lineup, so seeing AD dominate the paint like that probably didn’t sit well with the Grizzlies. I don’t think that’s what led to a double tech in the first half with AD and a Memphis player, shoving him after getting tangled up after a putback score. Good job passing in this game. He’s been doing really well with the passes from the post reading the D (along with his teammates). He was great in the rim protection department tonight. He was patrolling the lane and not pulled out on the perimeter. Defensive Player of the Year type of presence in this game once again. Well-rounded stat sheet tonight. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 7-11 shooting (5-6 from the line) to go with 11 boards (4 offensive), 5 assists, 6 blocks, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a +21.

Russell -- -- The shot was falling for him. I like the looks he was taking as they were largely in the flow. The best was a highlight on the break when Bron went behind his back to Russell trailing near the end of the first half for a three. In the third quarter, he buried three threes and had an And-1 putting his man in jail to scored 12 of the Lakers points during a 15-0 run. With Bron in the mix, he could be more of a scorer than playmaker, and everything came smoothly. He’s been averaging about 17 a game, similar to last season, but his three shooting hasn’t been falling. Tonight, they were dropping. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 8-12 shooting (6-8 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists and no fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +25.

Reddish -- -- He’s getting great looks from the corners and climbing back into his career averages with some good three shooting after the stone cold start. He made 6-11 from three in the last two games after the 2-16 start in the first 8 games. So now he’s 9-16 from three in his last three games. First play of the game, he nearly had a steal on the perimeter, but wasn’t as disruptive defensively as usual. Good overall game, though. He did choke a dunk late in the game losing some concentration on the finish. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-7 shooting (3-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +16.

Prince -- -- Quiet, but steady night. He sank an open wing three. He scored a layup when Reaves found him cutting on a set play. He attacked the closeout against the zone and hit AD for a dunk. He sank a wing three on a handoff. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-6 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +9.

Reaves -- -- So he led the team in rebounding (12) and in assists (7) off the bench. I’m loving that rebounding effort. We need that energy as the team has struggled to beat teams to the loose balls and boards this season. Hopefully, he can bring more of that with consistency. On the assists, man, some great chemistry with Hayes tonight, including a nice wraparound bounce pass for a dunk on an inbounds sequence and then the soaring lob pass from about 30 feet out in transition on the left side of the court that Hayes ran under. He read the defense and put it perfectly at the front of the rim. The three ball was money tonight, he hit all four attempts and they looked like freethrows, just automatic. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-9 shooting (4-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 12 boards (2 offensive), 7 assists, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +13.

Hachimura -- -- I liked his aggression in the first half. Ham talked about that a couple games back. Aggressive Rui seems to find his way in the offense much better. Of course, also good to see the three ball go down, as well. Like everyone else, he was looking like money from behind the arc. He was just bombing from all over the court, feeling it late in the game especially. Some props, too, for the defensive effort. He had some good challenges and rotations in this game in addition to grabbing boards. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 8-10 shooting (3-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +6.

Wood -- -- A poor shooting night. He’s just not in a rhythm at all. It would be nice if we could set him up for some easy ones. His one make was a layup on the two-man game with Reaves. Good hands to prevent a strip on that. But He couldn’t connect with anything else. Good work on the boards. He had an offensive board that he hit LeBron on for a score in the first half. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-8 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 10 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +9.

Hayes -- -- He had two highlight plays of the game. In the firs half, he missed a freethrow, no one stepped in front of him as the miss came back in his direction. He grabbed it and threw down a monster slam. Demoralizing play for the Grizzlies. In the fourth, another demoralizing dunk on the break. I think it was more because of how Reaves just threw a 30-foot lob toward the rim and Hayes ran it down and slam. That forced a timeout as the Laker bench exploded. Some better work on the defensive end, as well. He was actually contesting shots well in this one. Too often he gets himself into no man’s land and doesn’t alter shots. Tonight he was more committed to the challenge. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-4 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 blocks and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +6.

Christie -- -- Garbage time minutes only. His three with over three minutes left tied the Laker franchise record for team threes with 22. He scored a layup after a nice hesi to freeze a defender. Maybe a little confidence booster for him. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-2 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 1 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 9 minutes. He was a +10.

Lewis -- -- He came in for the last few minutes. He crossed over nicely baseline but got blocked at the rim. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting in 4 minutes. He was a +5.

Ham -- -- Key Moment: The Grizzlies had a run in that third quarter and Ham took a timeout. They’d get a three out of the timeout and settled things down. The Lakers pushed the lead back up to 31 on a 15-0 Laker run of which Russell had 12 on a series of three-point plays.

Key Substitution: A poor close to the quarter and the Lakers led by 21 heading into the fourth. They had a sluggish start to the fourth without Bron or AD on the floor, but they were able to manage. Credit to Rui and Reaves giving the bench some fire power. Rui couldn’t miss.

Key Stats: The Lakers shot 22-35 from three (62.9%). Grizzlies made 20 themselves, but took 53 attempts. That 42 combined threes, though, felt like no one could miss.

It’s so satisfying how we blew them out in game 6 of the playoffs last year, and then did it again in the first game since then when they should have been seeking revenge.

Thanks DB! Excellent write-up as always! This time, an excellent game by the Lakers too!

Is this blowout because Memphis hasn't found it's groove yet this season, or that the Lakers have? Some of each?

Great to see so many Lakers had an excellent outing this game.

Keep it up Lakers!

Finally a blowout win for the Lakers. The great thing is that they didn't even play anywhere near the top of their potential. They still have lots of room for improvement.

Wow, I don't remember seeing that kind of shooting from the Lakers in quite some time. Not only the record-tying threes, every jumpshot inside the arc seemed to fall without even touching the net. What a sight for the sore eyes. Hopefully they gradually inch their way to being an (above)average three point shooting team. It makes the game easier for all the players. Also loved the defense and the rebounding effort, especially in the first half.

Go Lakers!

In some ways, true. But they may never have another 3pt shooting night like this one!
