Purpose and intent. That's always the key with running the triangle. When LO gets back, getting him on the block against smaller SF's to collapse the D will be vital. Getting or post game more established will help with our consistency. | Outside of Sasha and Kobe at various times, the team generally played good/effective intensive and quick-rotating defense that didn't allow the Suns to get into any rhythm.
On offense - Kobe wasn't often the "black hole" and was cutting/moving that allowed him to receive great passes (generally from Luke) while saving energy while allowing the others to get into a rhythm.
The Lakers are not as bad as they appear against the Rockets, nor as good as they looked against the Suns. However, as Stu Lantz has stated many times, once you have shown me what you can do - I will expect it every time!
DB
The lineup of Farmar (1), Critt (2), Kobe (3), Luke (4) and Bynum (5) seem to move the ball very effectively - do you think that this will a lineup that will used more and more? |

D seems to be improved. Nice game by all tonight. With our size Phoenix does not match up well when we force them to play our game. _________________ "I appreciate all those who have supported me. Nice D-Bar thank you...........Can you remember in the last three seasons the second unit held or built the lead in the game....they did it twice!!! wow something exciting can happen to the Lakers this season........Plus Kwame and Bynum combined for 22 rebounds and 22 points....WTF!!!!!
You were right about Cook.....I am glad you put his + - out there.....had a feeling it was bad. Maybe Phil will find the pics that Cook is blackmailing him with and sit him on the bench.
I give Sasha the most grief....BUT he actually played well even though it was garbage time...he did not look one dimensional...one game lets hope thta a thing to come
The last time the Lakers just killed an elite team like the Suns was probably back in the Shaq-KObe Dynasty |

Nice write up DB.
I wish the Lakers could rid themselves of Cookie, mabye to bring back a defensive specialist.
I'd like to see Crit get more playing time particularily with Farmar. I think those two can actually play well together. I just hope Crit doesn't let Phil's short leash get to him. Good to hear both Dfish and Kobe in Crit's ear. I think this kid Crit is going to be special, he just needs the playing time. |

Same thing I said, WOW. I was wondering who the hell are these Lakers? I wish Barbosa had stayed on the bench so we could have won by 30+

What a team game ! Great win. But can't get all excited about it. I hope this morning at practice the attention shifts on Utah and how to beat them. A win is just a win, no matter against who you do it. BUT these sort of wins can give a team trumendous confidence .. with 3 games at home .. I would think they should atleast win 2/3. Never know with the "as the Lakers turn" what's happening next.
BTW - As great as DB is in writing this stuff up, I find Hubie's commentary just as great during games. Now this is not only because we won, in losses last year (and the year before that) when Hubie makes his comments .. I find them very interesting. He really breaks down the game from a coaching standpoint .. immediately gives you the positive + negatives of the players/teams. Is spot on too.
Big props earned:
Kobe - great team + man defense, more balanced offensive game (but IMO can still be much more effecient if he takes less jumpers and makes the quicker pass when trapped)
Fisher - the guy that sparked the run. Made big shot after big shot. No doubt the heart and soul of this team.
Kwame - rebounded very well, did a solid job on Amare, but could have anchored a bit better IMO (and no comments on O)
The ENTIRE BENCH minus Cook !
Bynum - 14/13/3 in 23 minutes. Damn. Really applied himself, even though the speed of the game does not suit his style. He's finishing much harder, far more aggressive on O and far less hesitant (but there is still a little bit hesitance in his game that needs to go)
Radmanovic - Wow. Our MLE's of the last 2 years are looking good so far. This is the Radmanovic that the Lakers envisioned.
Farmar - Solid, solid game. Looks so much quicker and potent on offense. Gets into an attacking position offensively much faster.
Crittenton - A little erratic, but wonderful handles and creating ability. Kobe Jr. may be a valid nickname in a year.
The key for the Lakers in the regular season - especially once Lamar comes back and Luke moves to the bench - is going to be our bench.
Bynum
Radmanovic/Cook
Walton
Evans/Crittenton
Farmar
We definitely have one of the deeper benches in the NBA. The 2nd units killing other teams 2nd units should change a number of games our way in the W column. |

Thanks DB. Love these. First place I look, over the newspaper, over anything else online. Stellar as always.
I couldn't believe how well we played. We have seen the Lakers play well for short bursts, but not almost the entire game! Great to see. I am hoping they are able to put behind them all the garbage of the last months (trade talks) and just settle in a bit.
And really, how much fun was it to SPANK the Suns on their home court? OH SO FUN!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ I love LA........WE LOVE IT! |

Good stuff DB! I think it was all about defense first but also Radman's productivity, as noted in the summary, really hurt the SUns. If he continues giving like this, it will be huge for the Lakers, and lets not forget LO isn't back yet. _________________ "You Must Be Willing To Give Up That Which Can Be Lost In Order To Gain That Which Cannot Be Lost." - FORTUNE COOKIE |

Thanks DB, that was a recap!!
I finally was able to watch a Laker game and loved what I saw:
Fish stated on DP Show he would like to see Nash score and keep his apg down. Nash had finished with only 3 assists! 3!! Fish surprised me tonight by matching Nash's 19 points by scoring 14 of his own. But hey Fish, you're a pg - you should have at least 1 assist!
Kwame played good defense last night despite his hurting dogs. Amare was held to 7 points on 2-10 shooting. Might not happen again, but this was beautiful 'cause Amare used to abuse us big time. For the right price, Kwame should be retained - but brought off the bench for players like him. LG, this is what Kwame is. Anemic offense, good defense and offensive rebounding. Let everyone else score.
Like Tony The Tiger, Vlad Rad looked gggggggggrrrrrrreeeeaaaatttt! Damn that shot was on tonight. He looked confident out there. Good to see.
Farmar/Critt combo. For a stretch they were in there together and looked damn good. So good, that I saw D'Antoni put Barbosa in there with Nash. Farmar even made the "doberman" (AKA Banks) look tame.
Bynum. 7-10 shooting. He is our starter, but I think PJ wants to keep Kwame out there for defense. Message to the 20 year old big fella: DEFEND AND THE STARTING JOB IS YOURS!!! Wow, he looked like a man amongst boys out there at time. Scoring on Amare at will.
Turiaf had a quiet night to me. I still like him in there because he defended (a vital key v. WC PFs) and that will put LO (remember him?) at the 3 when he gets back.
Overall, probably will never beat the Suns like we did last night. That was Showtime-esque. What I did see was effort on defense. If we continue to do that, we win a lot of games this year.
And Finally Kobe. 16 points in a rout. Does that even sound right? Well, what contributed mostly was his 11 boards and 3 steals. I hope this game on the road is enough to get him to trust his teammates. Again, games like this can help prolong his prime - but more importantly his tenure as wanting to remain a Laker. |

thanks DB
it was such a *fun* game to watch. blowouts are boring, unless it's your team stomping all over the opponent. I love that they spoiled the suns' home opener. D'Antoni showed what a bad sport he was by flipping out after Phil called the timeout. it's not like Phil was throwing in our starters to run up the score. love that everyone (minus cook ) had a part in our victory. |

Thanks DB. I feel good about this team. Sure, they'll have their ups and downs but I think good things are going to happen for us this year. |

I can not believe D'Antoni said that. Sounds like something a 10-year-old would say. _________________ JVG FOR LAKERS HEAD COACH |

I think Fisher always played a smart and tough defensive game. However, I don't ever remember Fisher having a better game on both sides of the ball than last night. |

As close to perfection as you can get. Everything clicked - D, rebounding, Bynum, Fish, JoFar, and that Kobe guy.
Fish - 13/18 in 2 games 72% FGA. |

the last two seasons, teams were able to crowd Kobe without having to worry about guys like Smush Parker and Luke Walton from the outside. But with Luke now preferring to shoot shorter jumpers and to post up and Fisher getting wide open midrange looks, the court will begin to open up for Kobe. While Fisher's percentage will drop during the season, expect Kobe's to go way up as teams will become unable to crowd him. |
