Thanks Scott, Rick and DB. That makes a lot of sense. That means trouble when facing penetrating perimeter players and bigs with an outside shot (re: Garnett et. al.) We still have some defensive work to do. That being said . . . what a nice start! |
we only have trouble with it when the center can shoot from 15 feet+. the pistons hurt us the most when rasheed was at center.
KG rarely plays center for the celtics |
We just need to make some adjustments and work on a few things and we'll tighten it up. Guys can't be as aggressively overplaying the passing lanes if a team is running counters for that. They need to adjust. You also need to see if a team can beat from the perimeter. Someone mentioned Rondo...one of the few things where we took the Celtics out of their game was when we let Rondo try and beat us from the perimeter. Kobe sagged off and helped on others and the Celtics offense stalled badly.
A lot of our problems were in transition, too. The Kings were getting quick looks after we made baskets. That's just hustle work on our end to get back. And if you want, you can deliberately slow down the tempo like we did with the Suns when they used to run and gun.
I think when it all comes down to it, our biggest issue will be on the simple high screen plays in the middle of the court. Pull our bigs out, try to attack a lane, and you may have some decent success. That's been bread and butter for NBA teams for decades. I wouldn't be surprised if Phil went to a 2-3 zone at some point against teams that run pick and pop or screen-rolls with their bigs and get penetration. The Celtics run more zone like that to keep their bigs back and patrolling the paint. |
