I've found Ortega Hwy 74, Turnbull Canyon, and just recently drove Big Bear Lake.
Does anyone else know good, challenging roads to tackle on a fun drive? _________________ Resident Car Nut.

Head up Angeles Crest Highway from La Canada-Flintridge, you can either just head up to Mt Wilson for a short drive, or cruise all the way over to Wrightwood and then down to the Cajon Pass. Killer scenery and plenty of twists and turns.
Palomar Mtn (se of Temecula) is an interesting drive (along the lines of the other ones you mentioned), and from there you can wrap down thru Julian and wind down past Cuyamaca, and onto Alpine/the 8. SE SD County--Jamul to Campo (Campo Rd) is something you'd probably dig. Not much CHP/cops, but tons of Border Patrol.
A cool all-day (or two-day) drive is: cruise N on the 5 to Hwy 46 (Lost Hills); head W on Hwy 46 thru the hills, past Shandon (where James Dean bit the dust), and on to Paso Robles (hitting the 101), continue W on Hwy 46 (you'll actually be going S on the 101 for a few miles before it splits back off) to Cambria. It'll spit you out on PCH in Cambria. Hang a right and cruise past San Simeon (Hearst Castle) and on to Big Sur (best drive in CA, if not the entire US, imo). Spend the night in Monterey--peep the aquarium--and then head back down thru Big Sur (you'll be on the ocean side this time) and take the coast the whole way home.

^Find these roads yourself? Drive a good ride?
I'm checking it out on Google Earth. All 3 routes look very impressive. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

Yeah, I used to be on the road a lot for work, SLO to TJ, and some of the drives I'd like more than others. Even in my work truck I'd figure out a way to make them fun.
Those are just a few that came to mind right away. |

Some local roads:
Carbon Canyon from Brea to Chino Hills
Santiago Canyon Road...connects Jamboree with El Toro
Trabuco Canyon Road...starts by Cooks Corner...only a few miles, but a nice drive. |

The Ortega Highway from like right when it gets to Riverside County to Lake Elsinore, is Hell! especially at night!
Big Sur at night is crazy too (going South though)! _________________ ♪ ♫One good thing about music, when it hits, you feel no pain...

I'd never do 74 at night. But no joke, I live a a ways from there, but have done roughly 50 laps on that spot, over the past 3 years. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

I remember Cajalco Road being fun in the Corona area back when I had my "93 Rx7...
Unfortunately, I don't know how it compares to any of the roads you are all talking about...
And I know driving through the Angeles National Forest is fun as all get out - unless you have your whiny arse girlfriend with you who squeels like a wild pig every time you accidently run up the dirt a little bit near a cliff... |

Oh I know about Stelvio Pass. I wish that was in Cali. I've read a lot of crazy stories about driving that spot in the rain too. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

It's also one of the premier bicycling climbs -- I'm hoping to get out there next summer to climb it (along with several climbs in France). |

You mean the 39 right?
By far the best drive I've ever had was Tail of the Dragon. Even the drive just to get there was high speed bliss. By the time you get to TOTD, it's dangerous to go 40-50mph in a basic economy car. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

Last month's OUtside magazine had an article about Tour rides you can do in the US. http://outside.away.com/outside/destinations/200707/top-bike-routes.html
6 of the 10 are here in California with most of those 6 here in SoCal. Mt Baldy, Mt Wilson, Latigo Canyon. _________________ I'm really big in Europe. |
