I've been away from the site for almost a week and am just getting the news, kinda in shock right now. Phil is a great guy and I'm really going to miss him around the site. Don't really have much to say, like I said pretty much in shock right now at the sad news. My heart goes out to his family, this really underscores the fragile nature of the gift of life we've all received, let's all the make the best of it because tomorrow never comes for every single one of us eventually, you never know when so treasure the time and loved ones around ya like this is the last day.
Rest in peace Phil, and Happy Holidays to my LG compadres, I'm sure Phil wouldn't have had it any other way. _________________ !

I didn't read this sticky until just now.
I didn't really have any 1 on 1 contact with Phil, but I always liked him from his posts. My thoughts will be with he and his family on Christmas. This is truly surprising and saddening news. My condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace Phil you will be missed. |

I think a great way to remember Phil would be to keep him logged here at all the time. just a thought _________________ “What is 17,505”

Wow. I just noticed this thread. Rest in Peace Phil.
Glad to see 10 pages of LGers giving their good-byes and condolences. I'm sure Phil appreciates that too. |

RIP, you will most definitely be missed. |
I do now. I had a nice PM exchange with Phil a couple of weeks ago.
I'm going to drop FS and butcher an email in case they haven't heard. |
Damn, it's good seeing most of the lt gang around here again.

I am terribly saddened to hear of Phil's passing.
It is really nice to see butcher, Fatsam, Dajadeed and nlbford on here although it is under bad circumstances. Lakerstalk really was a special place and the only website that I wish was still that isn't!
RIP Phil

Wish Phil could have enjoyed this game with his family on Christmas. That makes me sad, knowing how big of a Lakers fan he was.
Phil, you'll always be remembered on this board. |

I missed this thread too! Hope Phil is hanging with Chick, Greg and Jill... I met him a couple of times in real life via LT: he was one of the good guys, that is for sure. My heart goes out to his family.
BTW, that is me guarding Phil and blowing by him for a layup in those pictures that Alpha posted (on page 5, iirc). That sure brought back fond memories of the LT days. Nice to find out the other LT alumni are still around, but sad that it is under these circumstances. That was a great site while it lasted. Life is short... |

LarryCoon wrote: | Phil was a connector -- a conduit who brought others together, and helped them out in any way he could. His contribution to LG is one example of that. In addition to bringing people information through his posts (I don't remember ever seeing him engage in an argument about anything), he immediately stepped up when Jason was ready to sell LG, and accepted the challenge of continuing in Jason's footsteps. Even the sale of the site helped others -- the money went not to Jason, but to UCSD, where a scholarship was set up in the name of LakersGround. If any of you ever want to pursue a career as a pharmacist at UCSD and apply for financial aid, you just might be the beneficiary of Phil's and Jason's altruism.
Phil & I probably exchanged about 100 emails & PMs during the transition, talking about how to run the site, how to fix the problems, and how to move it forward. We disagreed on a lot of things, but he always listened with an open mind, and changed his opinion when it was warranted. He was a complete neophyte when it came to server technology, but he knew where he needed help, trusted others when appropriate, and did his best to learn about all this foreign technology.
Phil also quickly realized that he wasn't the right person to manage LG long term. There were a lot of tough decisions to make, and sometimes any choice would end up pissing somebody off. He took it all very, very personally, and pretty quickly realized that both LG and his sanity would be better off if it were in someone else's hands. He did his best to ensure that the site went to the right hands, and I think everyone will agree that his choice of DB was the right one.
Phil's non-LG life reflected the same passion and commitment as his LG life. He was heavily involved in the Obama campaign for the last year, and was ecstatic about Obama's victory and the prospects for the new administration. He was continuing his work with the transition team, and was planning to be at the inauguration next month.
Phil career was as a marriage and family counselor (again...helping others), and was excited about a project that was starting up to help Marines and their families at the 29 Palms Air to Ground Combat Center, which is close to where he lived in Joshua Tree. He was also very passionate about Joshua Tree National Park, and said he may have been Obama's top authority on the park.
My daughter and I go camping in JT once a year, and Phil & I were both looking forward to going on a hike together. Sadly, it'll have to be without him.
Rest in peace, Phil. You touched a lot of lives in a lot of ways, and just as we were all better off through your presence, we'll all be a little worse off through your absence. |
Thanks for this info, LC. Everything you said was pretty much how I envisioned him to be, even in my brief encounter with him solely from LG. I'm still shook from this news. The pics of him help and the outpour of condolences help as well. He just seemed like a hella-cool dude. We lost a good one. _________________
