One more article from me today:

Quote: | Please tell me we don't have to worry about the Over-36 rule if he signs an extension...
No such luck. The Over-36 rule applies to extensions as well.
Fortunately, if he signs his extension by June 30 he can only add on another three years, which will be up before he turns 36. So an extension signed now won't be affected by the Over-36 rule.
But if he waits until after July 1 and extends his contract by four years, the last season will commence after he turns 36. So he can't make more in a four year extension than he would make in a three year extension.
The net effect is that he would sign a three year extension, whether he does it this summer or next.
So how much money are we talking about with an extension?
The salary in the first year of an extension can be as high as 10.5% above the last season of the current contract, but it can't be above the player's maximum salary. Raises can be as high as 10.5% of the salary in the last year of the current contract.
Since an extension would take effect in 2011, and the maximum salary for the 2011-12 season won't be announced until July 2011, they pencil in the 10.5% raise, and amend the amount downward if necessary when the maximum salary is announced.
So assuming the economy recovers, the NBA starts making lots of money again, and the maximum salaries go through the roof, an extension would start at $27,410,906 and total $90,867,153 over three seasons.
If Bryant's maximum salary instead turns out to be 105% of his previous salary, then his extension would be amended downward to start at $26,046,562 and total $86,344,353.
You say we won't know the maximum salary until the extension takes effect. Which is more likely, a $90 million extension, or an $86 million extension?
The latter amount. It's hard to imagine the NBA's income going up so much that the maximum salaries increase to accommodate a full 10.5% raise for Bryant....

Nice article Larry
It covered everything.
edit: I didn't know that Kobe could also opt out next year. I agree that that's the most likely scenario. |

If we're going to ask Odom to take a pay cut and Ariza to not ask for too much money, Kobe should take a pay cut as well to lock in the other two guys (not to mention Shannon Brown). He's got more money than both of those guys... |

Kobe already has a contract. And the market says that these guys aren't going to get offered a lot of money. |

Would he take less money to see Ariza and Odom stay on the team?
“That’s not my responsibility, that’s the franchise’s responsibility to come to the table with things and have all the guys come back and make sure they get what they deserve,” he said.

Odom has to take a pay cut because there's no market for him. Ariza probably won't get ridiculous offers for the same reason. However, if Kobe were to suddenly go on the market, teams would throw everything they have at him. |

And the Lakers Organization has "got more money than" the entire team. Kobe's done his work, now it's time for the powers that be to pony up to keep the team intact. This is a business, not a charitable organization. |

Kobe should - to help lamar, trevor, and the lakers
Kobe shuldn't - instead he should do the opposite and sign for a max contract because he deserves it at this point of his career before he retires. |

It's a business. Magic Johnson took a paycut and all he got was Terry Teagle to give an assist for the all-time assist record at the time (before J.Stockton dismantled it). |

The business of contracts is always tough. A lot of Laker fans were happy to see Sasha come back as a Laker. Now a lot of us are wondering how to move that contract to another team.
We cannot have our cake and eat it too. _________________ This Laker Organization has not yet hit bottom. It is moving there quickly, and I suspect this year we will see zero talent coming to the Lakers and we will trade away Kuz and BI for old vets in the hopes of giving LeBronze some scapegoats. |

How about you tell Dr. Buss you would pay for Kobe's salary. Kobe gets what he wants, Buss doesn't have to pay and we get Thief and Candyman back. Sounds better to me. |

Agreed, Kobe has obtained his payday many times over already. _________________ "You Must Be Willing To Give Up That Which Can Be Lost In Order To Gain That Which Cannot Be Lost." - FORTUNE COOKIE |

What next? Will Rudy Garciuenas be asked to give back a portion of his paycheck?
Another epic fail thread. |

Curious question. Would any of you take a paycut to keep your coworkers employed? I read how some policemen were asked to take a paycut or have 9 of their fellow officers laid off. They chose not to take the paycut. Sorry if this ruins the mood of the thread. |

If Kobe is any kind of leader he'll make it happen. _________________ "You Must Be Willing To Give Up That Which Can Be Lost In Order To Gain That Which Cannot Be Lost." - FORTUNE COOKIE |

realistically if kobe was to take a pay cut, how much would his salary be assuming he takes the pay cut in order to keep LO and Riza? |

Wow, you are amazing. I just want to point out a typo, and comment about Kobe taking less. I think his popularity would go up enough to recoup the losses and then some, if he showed he cared more about winning and keeping this team together than himself, in terms of income, endorsements, media deals etc., during his retirement.
The typo is in bold:
Quote: | How many years can Kobe sign for?
Ordinarily he could sign for six years if he re-signs with the Lakers, or five years elsewhere. But since he's now 30, he runs up against the dreaded Over-36 rule if he signs a longer contract. The Over-36 rule doesn't explicitly limit contract lengths, but effectively does so by removing the financial advantage in singing a longer contract. |

They were discussing this on Mason/Ireland/Jalen Rose this morning. Jalen Rose started by saying if he were Ariza and got 5 million/yr it would be worth it to stay because being on a championship team opens up opportunities. So he was asked if he got 10million/yr... Jalen laughed and said it was nice knowing y'all.
Rose also said that in the end no matter how you feel about it... it's still a business. If Kobe were to get $135 million max and ended up decided to cut his salary to $115 million in order to help the franchise... it's one thing to like Ariza and LO, but how many people would want to give up more than $20million for anyone else?
$20million. Vanessa and 2 daughters... how do you explain to your wife and two daughters you gave up $20million to the billionaire (Anschutz owns part of the Lakers) in order to help them sign Uncle Trevor and Uncle Lamar?
I know I would be willing to sleep outside on the lawn to keep this team together, but would Kobe? |

Kobe is the LAST player that should take a paycut...(bleep) ridiculous...it's an insult to even ask him to take a paycut. Get real. |
