It has its moments, but tonight's show with Ben Stiller was just awful. And I mean, really, how many times do the writers want to re-use the same, un-entertaining characters with only slight variation?
It's never been LOL funny, just moderately amusing. But tonight's show wasn't even that. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

I find SNL somewhat funny, but I really don't watch it that often, so the skits aren't as stale to me as I assume they are to their regular audience.
I really don't have much reason to watch unless I really like the guest host. If there is a particular skit that is really good, I usually hear about it and catch it on youtube later on. _________________ Jeffs

There were a couple of skits the past few years which were good- **** in a box, jizz in my pants, the O.C. parody with Shia Lebouf. That's about it. I never watch SNL, Tonight Show, they all suck ass. _________________ Lakers. Built different.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno isn't funny at all to me. I just find Leno's style of humor rather boring. And his interviews just aren't entertaining.
Conan wasn't LOL funny, but he was very entertaining. I quit watching him after he moved to TBS.
Letterman overall has the best show right now, in my opinion. I might watch occasionally, but if there's an interview I want to see, I usually just YouTube it. Letterman is rather stale at times, too, especially with things like the "Top Ten" list. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

It's always been greatly inferior to Mr. Show, and Upright Citizens Brigade, but whatever I see of it now (which isn't much) is pretty pathetic. _________________ *Warning: The preceding post may have contained sarcasm and/or irony.

It ceased being funny once Lovitz left the show. _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.

Those were good years, but the 197(5?6?) seasons were wonderful. _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.

The only part I really look on Leno for is his monologue, and when he does the Jay Walking segment. SNL really is boring and stale, and has been for years now. The last time SNL was at least reasonably funny was when Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler and Tracy Morgan was on there. The only good parts of the show is when they parody politics (even that isn't funny anymore) and the Weekend Update. _________________ Bryant, putting the moves on Christie…rebound O'Neal…coming up short…Horry…for the win…YEESSSSSSSSSS -- Marv Albert

I think there were only 3 strong casts in their history from what I've actually seen, either live or in syndication. I gotta separate my love for the more legendary pillars (Chevy, Aykroyd, Belushi, Murray) from their movies in consideration of their work on SNL itself. I'll also admit that I might be a bit more partial to the late 80s, early 90s era as I was an actual fan at that point. I've seen some SCTVs from the same period, by contrast, that had segments that made me lmao hard. They need to be mentioned in this thread sooner or later (Candy, Ramis, Levy, etc).
I gotta w/ the "older guard" from the late 80s as it was mixing w/ the new batch of the early 90s. The period where Carvey, Hartman, Lovitz, Neilon, Dennis, Victoria/Jan began mixing and some being replaced by Myers, Farley, Sweeney, Spade, etc. That was a lot of talent and they had edgy writers and recurrent characters that had enough legs to leech out into the popular culture. I remember when Mike Myers was a newbie who could barely get on screen and he turned out to be their biggest face. They haven't had anyone who could do that and then become a star outside of the show since the late 90s (Ferrell if I'm not forgetting someone). Dearth of talent. And it doesn't help that there are few if any musical guests I'd tune in to watch nowadays. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL SEDALE TRIBUTE EDDIE DONX!

I think people tend to overrate old SNL (late 70s, late 80s, early 90s). Not everything they did was funny. There's a lot of filler that people tend to forget, and a lot of it was taken out for syndication.
SNL these days is mostly not funny, but, as others have mentioned, it has its moments. Whenever Alec Baldwin shows up, the show tends to be good. Dick In the Box, More Cowbell, Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin, etc. Those are all recent sketches that have had an impact. I still DVR it every week. If I don't like something, I just skip it. _________________ ¡Hala Madrid!

I don't think it's overrating at all. Nothing is 100% superb, even Magic, Kareem, and Kobe have had stinker performances among the bulk of their good works. But this period in the show's existence is as weak as the early 80s that no one ever mentions for a reason. Eddie Murphy was trying to get out of there as soon as he could. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL SEDALE TRIBUTE EDDIE DONX!

In the mid-'70s (the Chase, Belushi, Ackroyd, Newman, Morris, Radner, Curtain era), it was revolutionary. I remember watching the first episode and being floored. Up to that point, the cutting edge of American TV comedy was stuff like Laugh In and the Smothers Brothers. With a few exceptions, virtually all of the great works of American comedy over the last 36 years have their roots in the SNL revolution.
Since then, it's never been revolutionary again. It's had good eras and bad eras depending on the quality of the writing and acting talent, but it hasn't been groundbreaking.
