Can someone break down how their leagues are structured. I figure the leagues are seperated by region but exactly how many leagues are there and do teams from other leagues ever play one another. Its clearly not like american sports with one legitimate league so if someone could break it down I would appreciate it. ie) Arsenal is in the premiere league while Real Madrid is in a spainish league but could these teams ever play one another.

Every country has its own league. The best teams from the national leagues play in European Cups, the best being Champions League, the worse UEFA Cup. Countries are not represented equally here, from the best countries footbal-wise you have usually 3-4 teams in the Champions League, while the weakest countries' teams usually drop out in the preliminary rounds of the competition.

Most, if not all European countries have their own professional leagues that differ in structure slightly, number of teams and the time of year played. So take the English leagues. The Premier league is the highest pro league with 3 divisions below it (The Championship and the First and Second Division). But then below these 4 leagues are a myriad of semi-pro and amateur leagues. Promotion and relegation from all these leagues are based on league positions. Larger nations might have leagues of 20+ teams in each division. Smaller might have only 10+ and less divisions. Like my man above said, the only way teams from different nations can play each other is in European competitions (played annually and a lot of money involved).
