Lakers miss bad on Aldridge, fall of a once-mighty franchise continues
By Zach Harper | NBA writer
July 4, 2015 12:58 pm ET
LaMarcus Aldridge wanted to talk basketball, not anything else. This is how far the Los Angeles Lakers' organization has fallen over the past couple of years. They went from being the assumed prime destination of the NBA -- the organization every star died to join -- to being a team in need of a merciful second interview with a free agent, just so they can try to get on the same page.
And they still didn't get their guy. Aldridge is going to the Spurs.
This is becoming a very glaring and troubling trend in Laker land.
Whether it was rumors about a lack of basketball discussion in the first Aldridge meeting or possible unintentional subterfuge because of Kobe Bryant's presence, free agency negotiations between big players, Aldridge or otherwise, and the Lakers no longer go to a place that benefits a once-proud organization. We saw it when Dwight Howard left the team after one year and moved on to the Houston Rockets. We saw it with a courtesy visit by Carmelo Anthony last summer and the fact that they couldn't even land a meeting with LeBron James -- only his agent Rich Paul.

Lakers Rumors: Rounding Up Buzz on Amar'e Stoudemire and Free-Agent Targets

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports
There are two ways to look at the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency right now.
One, the team just isn't an attractive destination anymore. Kobe Bryant's still around, the team has two young rookies and the rebuild remains a few years out.
Two, all the above is bunk. As some information below will reveal, the team remains in the hunt for major names. When such a realization hits, it becomes clear the front office is just being more careful than usual about its rebuilding process.

Lakers News: Analyzing LaMarcus Aldridge Chase, D'Angelo Russell's Impact, More

The Los Angeles Lakers are slowly building a strong foundation of young players. The selection of D'Angelo Russell to join Jordan Clarkson and Julius Randle gives the organization three legitimate building blocks for the future.
Yet the Lakers are still a team in transition. As long as team legend Kobe Bryant remains on the roster, there will be an urge to accelerate the retooling process. The storybook ending would be one more title with him on the squad followed by the team smoothly moving into a new era.

Lakers Rumors: Latest Buzz on LaMarcus Aldridge, Plan B Options and More
By Sean ODonnell , Featured Columnist Jul 4, 2015
Not much has worked out for the Los Angeles Lakers early in the 2015 NBA free-agency period. The team set its sights on a multitude of top-tier players, including DeAndre Jordan, LaMarcus Aldridge and Kevin Love, with practically zero success.
Love agreed to a five-year, $110 million contract to remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers, while Jordan just recently announced an agreement with the Dallas Mavericks that will keep him in Texas for four years on about $80 million, according to Marc Stein and Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com. And then there's the case of Aldridge.
The Lakers completely botched their first meeting with the big man, failing to fully discuss the basketball aspects of the pitch. Interestingly enough, the team was granted a second chance with the power forward, and while its pitch was better, it still fell short, according to a tweet from Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times:

Aldridge, who turns 30 on July 19, had spent all nine seasons of his NBA career with the Portland Trail Blazers, developing into one of the league's best big men. He informed the Trail Blazers on Friday night that he had narrowed his choices to either the Spurs or Phoenix Suns, then chose the Spurs on Saturday morning.

Aldridge, Monroe teach Lakers valuable lesson

J.A. Adande, ESPN Senior Writer
If there's one thing the Los Angeles Lakers can learn from LaMarcus Aldridge's almost inevitable decision to join the San Antonio Spurs, it's that this is not about the presentations, it's about the roster and the culture.
The Lakers got a second chance to make their pitch to Aldridge after their first attempt was widely ridiculed for its lack of basketball focus. I'd argue the Lakers got their encore appearance because the first was widely ridiculed, and Aldridge's representatives felt bad that the word got out and wanted to give the Lakers a chance to save face.
Even if the Lakers scaled down the presentation, made it less about Hollywood and more about the hardwood in the second go-round, they couldn't change the basic facts that they can only sell the glorious past and the possibilities of the future. They can't sell the present. They don't have the core components of a team that won a championship a year ago like the Spurs do, they don't have a culture where the star player takes discounted contracts and even a role player primed to cash out like Danny Green sticks around at a discounted rate.

Lakers lose out on LaMarcus Aldridge: Who should they go after now?

NBA free agency began in Los Angeles at 9:01 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lakers have agreed to terms with exactly zero free agents.
The team met twice with forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who announced on Saturday that he'll join the San Antonio Spurs.
Marc Gasol doesn't have an agreement yet with the Memphis Grizzlies, but it's reportedly just a matter of time.
DeAndre Jordan will play for the Dallas Mavericks, Greg Monroe the Milwaukee Bucks, Brook Lopez the Brooklyn Nets, Robin Lopez the New York Knicks, Tyson Chandler the Suns, Amir Johnson the Boston Celtics, Tobias Harris the Orlando Magic, Brandan Wright the Memphis Grizzlies, Paul Millsap the Atlanta Hawks, Kevin Love the Cleveland Cavaliers, Draymond Green the Golden State Warriors, Bismack Biyombo the Toronto Raptors and Omer Asik the New Orleans Pelicans.

Los Angeles Lakers: Now what?

Well that did not go as planned.
The Los Angeles Lakers have not had a very successful free agency period and have failed to attract any big-name players to the team. The Lakers reached out to a number of star players including LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan and Greg Monroe. However, all of these players decided to take their talents elsewhere and left the Lakers in the dust.
So far, the Lakers have yet to add any significant pieces outside of the draft and are now forced to look at other options.

Pacers and Lakers reach deal, Roy Hibbert to be traded after July 9
Candace Buckner, candace.buckner [AT] indystar.com 6:24 p.m. EDT July 4, 2015
After a tumultuous start to the offseason, when he was called out by Larry Bird and cast aside for a younger, more athletic draft pick, Roy Hibbert now appears to be on his way out of Indiana.
On Saturday, the Pacers purportedly agreed to trade Hibbert to the Los Angeles Lakers. ESPN's Marc Stein first reported talks of the trade. A league source confirmed to The Star the deal can be completed after July 9, the end of the NBA moratorium. If all goes through, the deal marks an abrupt end to the seven-year Indiana tenure of the player who once supplied the defensive identity of the Pacers.

Report: Lakers acquire All-Star center Roy Hibbert
WRITTEN BY MICHAEL CRONIN POSTED: 07/04/2015, 03:10PM
The Lakers missed out on Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan and a host of other big men, as they tried to upgrade their front court, but finally they got their man — former All-Star center Roy Hibbert from the Indiana Pacers.
Technically, the deal won’t be completed for a few more days, but multiple sources say it’s all but done.

REPORT: LAKERS, PACERS FINALIZING HIBBERT DEALJuly 4, 2015 · 6:46PM
The Lakers and Pacers were deep into discussions Saturday on a deal that would send center Roy Hibbert to Los Angeles and at least temporarily solve a problem for both, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reported.
Whether other players would be involved was not immediately clear. The Lakers would be able to absorb the $15.5 million on the final season of Hibbert’s contract into available cap space — room that had been set aside for failed attempts to land a marquee free agent — making it possible they would only be sending draft picks to Indiana in return.

Lakers close to making trade for Pacers center Roy Hibbert
ERIK S. LESSER / EPA
Center Roy Hibbert became available in a trade this off-season when the Pacers decided to play an up-tempo game instead of the half-court oriented basketball they had featured.

The Lakers are finalizing details to acquire Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert, a middle-tier option after the team struck out on a slew of big-name free agents this week.
Hibbert gives them a post player with legitimate NBA experience but he is coming off a poor season.
The Lakers will give up at least one future second-round pick and perhaps some players no longer on their roster who are playing overseas. They might also include cash to Indiana in the deal.
Hibbert, 28, is a good shot blocker but erratic scorer and below-average rebounder. His days in Indiana were numbered when team President Larry Bird all but guaranteed he would play a lesser role next season.

Unless Lebron, Kobe, Durant, westbrook type.
Hibbert will fill a hole, but not at the expense of the future.
But he will cost $$ which the Lakers should have. |

Hopefully Hibbert will have a chip on his shoulder because of last season and also because this upcoming season is his contract year.
Will Upshaw embrace probably the last and greatest opportunity to prove his haters are wrong this upcoming season?
http://www.silverscreenandroll.com/2015/7/3/8889011/la-lakers-robert-upshaw-nba-draft
With both centers having a "Chip on Their Shoulder" should motivate them to play, especially given the Lakers' track record of giving players a decent change to prove themselves - like what Ed Davis did last year.
Maybe they will pick up David Lee once the Warriors' price goes down and/or "motivated by Lee's agent to move him.

Lakers reportedly close to making deal for Indiana center Roy Hibbert
July 4, 2015 Updated 7:17 p.m.
BY JANIS CARR / STAFF WRITER
The Lakers couldn’t get the centers they wanted so they are looking at the next best, and perhaps only, option left for a veteran big man: Roy Hibbert of the Indiana Pacers.
The Lakers and Pacers are actively working on a trade that would send the 7-foot-2 former All Star center from Indiana to L.A. The Lakers are expected to give up at least one future second-round pick and possibly players who are playing overseas in a trade for Hibbert.

The best part of free-agent season in the NBA is all the speculation it brings, both for the players seeking new contracts and for potential trades. Through two days, there has already been enough manic action and talk involving all 30 teams to fill an entire offseason.

Everything You Need to Know from Day 4 of 2015 NBA Free Agency
By Stephen Babb , Featured Columnist July 4, 2015
Day 4 of NBA free agency may not have been the busiest so far, but it was certainly one of the most momentous when it comes to the league's ever-shifting balance of power. The always-contending San Antonio Spurs just got a whole lot better, while the Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors grew slightly deeper on Saturday.
By now, much of the dust around the league has settled. The LaMarcus Aldridge decision marks the last widely anticipated relocation of the young offseason. Much of the business occurred in its opening hours, and still more is set to follow the major dominoes that have fallen thus far.
