Quote: | Yankees Trade Sheffield to Tigers for Three Pitchers (Update1)
2006-11-10 16:26 (New York)
The New York Yankees traded Gary
Sheffield, who complained about playing first base after the
Major League Baseball team picked up his $13 million contract,
to the Detroit Tigers for three minor-league pitchers.
The Yankees received right-handed pitchers Humberto
Sanchez, 23; Kevin Whelan, 22; and Anthony Claggett, 22, for
Sheffield, a 37-year-old All-Star outfielder.
Sheffield, who hit .298 with six homers and 25 runs batted
in over 39 games last season, sought to become a free agent and
sign with a team of his choice before the Yankees picked up the
final year on his contract. With the Tigers, he'll be reunited
with manager Jim Leyland, whom he played for on the 1997 World
Series champion Florida Marlins.
The nine-time All Star missed 117 games with a wrist injury
this season. He was moved to first base when he returned because
the Yankees acquired right fielder Bobby Abreu from
Philadelphia.
Sanchez posted a 10-6 record and ranked second among all
Tigers' minor-league pitchers with a 2.63 earned run average and
129 strikeouts in 20 games with Triple-A Toledo and Double-A
Erie in 2006.
Whelan ranked third among all Tigers' minor-league pitchers
with 27 saves in 2006, going 4-1 with a 2.67 ERA in 51 games for
the Class-A Lakeland Tigers.
Claggett posted a 7-2 record with a team-best 0.91 ERA and
14 saves in 51 games for Class-A West Michigan in 2006. |

This is is a good move for the Tigers....
Hey, I hope he proves me wrong. Detroit was crazy with Tigers' fever this past WS. _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.

We'll see if you still think so when the Tigers are paying him $13 million and he's acting like Sheff acts in the clubhouse. _________________ Game recognize game, Granddad. - Riley Freeman, The Boondocks |

great trade for Yankees, bad trade by Tigers.
Yankees get the young pitching they need, while just gving up a cancer that is old and injured.
Why wouldn't Detroit just sign someone like Carlos Lee for similar money and not have to give up the prospects.
The yankees have enough hitting to give up Sheff and they will probably sign some big free agent bat to take his place. |

Wow, dumb move for Detroit. Yankees needed to add some youth and Sheff wanted to leave anyway.
+1 Yankees |
