Hey... since no one has mentioned him... how about Neal Schon? Yeah, yeah... the one from Journey. But, the dude is actually a hell of a guitarist.

He must have been good, Carlos Santana hired him at 15 for his band.

My favorite, though maybe not the best (even though Rolling Stone has him at #2) is the late, great Duane Allman. Probably the greatest rock slide guitarist of all time. He and Dickie Betts put together an awesome guitar duo. I was lucky enough to see the ABB before Duane's untimely passing, and they were definitely the greatest American rock band ever. From the haunting riffs on Layla to the inspiration for Freebird, Duane was great.

Finally some respect for the late great Duane Allman. Have you seen this kid Derek Trucks play slide? He's Butch Track's nephew and is quite an amazing player, saw him with Slowhand this year.

Speakig of Duane, on the liner notes of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue it was mentioned that Duane Allman was crazy about and inspired by that classic jazz album. Partly explains his masterful improvisations.

And Kirk Hammett isn't even the best guitar player in his own band, much less the best in rock history.

You may not like Kirk Hammett or may likely you don't like that type of music. But you cannot deny his greatness after closing your eyes and listening to Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets (arguably the greatest album in history) from beginning to end. No one can jam as fast as Kirk with his pure precision and perfection. Don't base your opinion of him off his last album.

Here's a list from Rollingstone (top 100).

I'm actually a musician by trade, and own every Metallica album from Kill 'Em All on. I certainly KNOW Metallica's stuff. Hammett didn't even write the solos and riffs on Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets, Hetfield did. And Hammett is incredibly sloppy live. When you have an infinite amount of takes, eventually you're gonna hit it....but live is the truest test. I don't know if you've ever seen Dream Theater (Petrucci) or Steve Vai live, but Hammett doesn't ever approach what they do. Like I said, he's not even the best guitar player in his own band.

And considering that I mentioned Vai and Becker, I'm not sure what gave you the impression that I don't listen to that kind of music.

I've seen Hammett live two times. He was incredible, as usual. Maybe you caught him on a bad day. Anyways, I'm sorry my opinion is wrong, but I'm not alone.

Best guitar solo of all-time

Hammet voted best solo of all-time for "One" by an overwhelming 29%.

He's also rated number 11 all-time best guitarist by RollingStone. Sorry, Vai and Becker did not even make the list. Oh, and either did any other members of Metallica....so to say he is not even the best in his own band is laughable.

And as someone mentioned above, when you are thrashing live while jumping around head banging your performance will not be perfect. As long as you can hit your notes with perfection while still you are alright in my book.
