I bet you can all guess what this post is going to be is about. He's a free agent this Summer. He's not a bad fall back option. Currently up there with PPG in the league, and may even end up an all-NBA player this year. We should definitely go for him if the other options don't pan out.
Yes, all of that. But that's not actually what this thread is about. Go check Kemba Walker's stat lines throughout his career. Go year by year. Check out his production. Check out his shooting percentages and his efficiency.
Right now, Kemba is on a 48m/4 year contract. He's been playing at an all-star level for the past 4 years on just 12m a year. How did this happen?
Here's how. He was a lottery pick that the team had high hopes for, but his early production was disappointing. By his third season, the season that, according to everyone, "you see it or you don't", he was averaging 18 points per game on less than 50%TS. In his 4th year, his contract year, his production stayed the same, and his efficiency dropped even lower.
Bust, right? Can't pay him. Gotta trade him, because he's going to want the max, and he's clearly not a max player.
The Hornets kept him. He didn't get a max contract. Why not? Because he was a restricted free agent, and you generally have to overpay to get a restricted free agent. No one is going to overpay a 2015 level Kemba player.
How does this apply to the Lakers? There seems to be a narrative, both within the fanbase and throughout the media, that the Lakers need to find out "who can play with Lebron". That the young kids have this season to get it together and prove that they're future stars, or they're out. Trade them all!
The bottom line is this: the plan for the Lakers is to get another star in free agency this Summer. That's plan A. For some reason, people seem to think plan A was "hope the young guys develop in to all stars right this year, oh no it's not working, abort the plan, trade everyone". That's not it, chief. The current young Lakers do not interfere with the actual plan A. In fact, trading them for a huge contract in return is actually what would blow up plan A.
Assuming we get that other max player, that's it for our cap. It doesn't matter how many of the young kids we let walk or trade for expirings and picks. We're going to be capped out. The only way to sign a productive supporting cast is to keep your own guys. They don't have to be stars when you already have Lebron and another all-NBA superstar. If they're going to be productive role players, there's no reason to not keep them around on reasonable contracts and see how they continue to develop into their primes.
And yes, I would abandon all of that and ship them all out for Anthony Davis tomorrow if we could. That's just not realistic.

You seem to be all over the place. First you start off how Charlotte got lucky because they signed Kemba to a cheap contract and then he blossomed into a star. Then you say we should sign all our guys even if they don't turn into stars.
Don't see why Charlotte getting Kemba for $12 million a year means we get a great deal signing Jordan Clarkson for $12 million a year. |

Maybe. But that team isn't going anywhere. They can offer the most money no doubt. But I've followed Kemba for years going back to UCONN, and he's not made that way. It's probably eating him up inside that he hasn't gotten anywhere in the playoffs.
My guess is he's eyeing NYC. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

So he wants to be in the playoffs and is looking at the Knicks? I guess if KD or KL join him. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

Right. With another max and possibly Porky returning.
Out of the top FAs, he's the most NYC bound. He loves that city and I could see him being the face of NYC. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

He took UCONN on that magical championship run through the Garden. It was electric. I can see him doing that again. (though not championships ). _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

JR is a good player but he is overrated.
That is how LG is, trash a guy all year as soon as he leaves and does good. They cry that we don't have him anymore. |

What did Charlotte want?
I've followed Kemba for a long time now. Trust me, dude bleeds NYC.
I've acknowledged that CHA can offer more money, but not sure they will. He's a FA so he can choose $+mediocrity or 85-90% of same $+face of NYC+better chances to succeed.
Guy is an unknown b/c he's been playing in Charlotte. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |
