panamaniac wrote: | Had a good time watching the Elton John biopic. Huge Elton fan, so it was definitely a treat to hear his music scored for the big screen. The acting was solid, particularly Taron Egerton, who apparently was handpicked by Elton himself (and sings pretty well too). From a technical filmmaking standpoint, I found it to be tad rushed. Similar to the Mötley Crüe movie. By the third act, most of the actions seemed inconsequential and just kind of played out like a montage of Sir Elton's life. But the movie built enough goodwill through the first act, as his upbringing and childhood experiences are compelling and offer an introspective dissection into the man he would become. Also, some of the narrative choices made it seem a bit hip, as it segues in and out of musical numbers highlighting each stage of his life. They serve as nice little time stamps. Although, it does make one wonder; Bernie Taupin wrote all of those lyrics. So who knew they were so closely intertwined with Elton's life. Or maybe they planned that, I don't know. Either way, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the film. I found it better than Bohemian Rhapsody from a storytelling perspective. |
Worth seeing on the big screen?
And great review, thank you. _________________ Under New Management |

Thanks. Yeah, I would say so. I think you’ll appreciate Egerton’s performance. |

If it's playing in your area, go see The Last Black Man in San Francisco and let me know what you think. _________________ Under New Management |

The Soderbergh remake? Not super high, tbh, though it's a lot of fun. _________________ Under New Management |

Loved Ocean's Eleven. The sequel wasn't as good, but still fun; loved the twist near the end of that one. The third film was meh. I haven't seen the remake yet with the Sandra Bullock-led cast, but plan to. |

I really like him in oh brother where art thou, Syriana, and Michael Clayton, but his easy charm in the Oceans franchise is hard to beat. _________________ “We must always take sides. For those interested in hard to find short films, I present Le Cinema Club: Le Cinema Club.
Every week the site (on Saturdays) updates with a new, usually rare short film often from name directors. _________________ Under New Management |

It shouldn't be a guilty pleasure, imo, it's a truly good-to-great flick. Elmore Leonard meets Soderbergh meets Clooney and Lopez at some of their best work.

I liked it. I don't think it's a movie I'll ever watch again but it was a great watch that posed a lot of fascinating questions. |

A Netflix movie I came across that I really liked was The Outsider with Jared Leto. Really good Yakuza movie, IMO. |

Like, did we need yet another reenvisioning of The Wicker Man? Perhaps we did. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel |

The Farewell may be screening at a theater near you and I highly recommend it. It's a lovely paean to that sensation of going home yet never being able to go home again and the deep, broad, simple emotions that govern families.
As an additional sell for what is mostly a Chinese language family drama about a grandmother with cancer, The Farewell is frequently really funny and the characters - especially the grandmother (Nai Nai) - are wonderfully written and acted with an impressive balance of tone. It's a rare indie crowdpleaser that brings a distinct visual style and doesn't get bogged down in trite mawkishness. _________________ Under New Management |
