Boras claiming MLB teams are much more interested in talking early this year.
Quote: | "Clubs are wanting meetings and wanting to get in front of the players," Boras said at the general managers meetings. "They're all telling me they want to make much earlier decisions. I did not hear any of that last year." |
Quote: | When asked if any of his high-profile clients might sign before mid-January, Boras said, "I think all of them have the possibility of signing much earlier than that." |
Quote: | Boras thinks teams would rather explore the trade market first, trying to "dupe" other teams into bad trades -- based on their analytics -- before they turn to free agency, hence the delays. |
MLB has to figure out how to take more advantage of its transaction season to increase fan interest. |

This is very promising, as there is already significant free agency news:
--Possibly the best reliever on the market is already gone: Will Smith has agreed to a 3-year, $40MM deal with the Braves, and it could become a 4-year, $52MM deal if the Braves exercise a 4th year option
--Jake Odorizzi has accepted the Twins QO and will make $17.8MM, probably realizing that the QO would have depressed his market a la Keuchel last season. It's more than he would've received per year, so he can hit free agency again next season without being encumbered by the QO. |

Jose Abreu has also accepted his QO from the White Sox. (Today is the deadline on accepting or rejecting QO's.) |

Trout wins the MVP, ho hum. I had always thought that Pujols was the best player I had seen but it has to be Trout. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

Pirates pitcher Felipe Vazquez faces 21 new child sex-related charges
Prosecutors filed 21 new charges Tuesday against suspended Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Felipe Vazquez after investigators found evidence of child pornography on devices they say he owned.
Vazquez, 28, was ordered to stand trial Tuesday on 10 counts of child pornography, 10 counts of unlawful contact with a minor and a single charge of corruption of minors in addition to sex crime accusations filed in September in connection with the alleged assault of a 13-year-old girl in Scottdale.
“They had exchanged photographs … and subsequently did engage in sexual intercourse in his vehicle,” testified Trooper Michael Thompson during a nearly two-hour preliminary hearing.
Both sets of charges involve the same girl, who now lives in Florida, Thompson said.
Vazquez was arrested in September on a warrant issued by Florida police, accusing the All-Star pitcher of sending sexually explicit photos to the girl and soliciting sex via text message. Hours later, he was charged with sex crimes by Pennsylvania state police related to allegations that he engaged in sexual activity in August 2017 with her in Scottdale.
A request by Florida authorities to have Vazquez extradited to Lee County, near Fort Myers, was denied by a Westmoreland County judge Tuesday.
“He will stay until the charges are disposed of in this county,” Common Pleas Judge Rita Hathaway said.
Thompson testified about a few messages between Vazquez and the girl and the sexual contact alleged to have occurred outside her home. During an interview at his Pittsburgh apartment during his arrest, Vazquez showed Thompson images on his laptop that the girl had sent him, according to testimony.
“He wanted to show me things that she had sent him,” Thompson testified.
Seven images and three videos of the girl in various stages of nudity were found on an iPhone XS and Apple MacBook Pro troopers seized from Vazquez during the investigation, he testified. The pair continued communicating up until his arrest.
Vazquez will remain in the Westmoreland County Prison without bail.
His attorneys offered to post $1 million bail and have Vazquez be placed on electronic monitoring at a home in Westmoreland County. Attorney Robert Wheelock argued that Vazquez would not flee because of his talent and potential to resume playing baseball professionally. His sister attended the hearing in support of him.
“He’s got easily 10 years left in him that are going to be extremely lucrative,” Wheelock said.
Vazquez was expected to challenge extradition to Florida, he said. He claimed efforts by Florida prosecutors were “legally deficient.”
Assistant District Attorney Jim Lazar argued that no bail should be set, in part, because Vazquez faces deportation to Venezuela, if convicted, and because he is a “significant flight risk.” He has permanent resident status in the United States, Lazar said.
“He is a man of considerable means,” Lazar said, listing contracts worth millions of dollars Vazquez had with the Pirates during the past couple of years.
“When you’re 13 years old, you don’t get to consent to having sex with an adult male,” Lazar argued. “She’s 13, and he’s a professional baseball player.”
District Judge Charles Moore sided with the prosecution.
“I’m not comfortable putting him in a position where he’s going to be out in our community,” he said.
Wheelock said after the hearing he plans to take up the bail issue with a Common Pleas judge.

that guy is just mentally sick....this is not a case of a 17 year old with a push up bra. Grown men do not view 13 year old children as anything but children that are to be protected. |

Ex-Magic executive Pat Williams wants to bring MLB to Orlando
Quote: | The man who helped bring an NBA team to Orlando said Wednesday that he wants to bring a Major League Baseball team to the theme park mecca. |
Quote: | With a population of 2.5 million, metro Orlando also gets 75 million tourists each year. In addition to pro basketball, the region has professional men's and women's soccer teams. |

The Orlando Dreamers is probably a fitting name. I think it is clear that if Orlando could prove to be a good home for a MLB team, moving the Rays down the highway seems more logical. I have always wondered how the Rays would do if the stadium was built in South Orlando near the attractions and still relatively close to Tampa.....and call them the Central Florida Rays...or even the Florida Rays since the Marlins changed to Miami. The best case scenario is the team draws from both metro and surrounding areas....or since it is too far outside Downtown Orlando, it draws from neither. |

I was reading a study released recently in regards to the NBA's most loyal and engaged fan bases by Mike Lewis of Emory University. I noticed he released one about MLB in March this year. It basically looks at 3 different elements.
Fan Equity - Home game revenue
Social Equity - Twitter
Road Equity - Teams draw in away games

this really sucks....the Reds needed to upgrade the offense at this position, and we had been linked to him for months. At least it weakens the Brewers. |

I feel stupid and ill. When I read your response I wondered if 16 was the common age of consent in South America. Then I was reading an article this morning where some porn star is claiming a Thunder player owes her money and it mentions she claims to have had intercourse with a Pacers player when she was 16....but 16 is the age of consent in Indiana! I did not know any states had age of consent being that young, but apparently most of them do!
https://www.ageofconsent.net/states
I knew some states had exemptions for close in age consent...such as an 18 year old with a 17 year old, but I really was not aware so many states list the age of consent @ 16. As someone who has spent time around normal 16 year old females in recent years, that is just too young....they are just too immature.
This map just makes me sad....

China the age is 14! In Japan and Angola it is 13! |

I was aware of the 16 year old age of consent in some states but assumed it was for cases where a high school sophomore and senior are dating/things of that nature that are not creepy or predatory. But for a law to equate to "16 and you're an adult who a 30/40/50 year old can pursue" is just wrong IMO. |

I was reading through some of the other countries, and some are more complex than the listing. For example, Japan lists the age as 13, but...
Quote: | At 13, Japan's base age of consent is the lowest of any developed country. However, many prefectures also have local "corruption of minors" or "obscenity statutes" (淫行条例) which raise the de-facto age of consent to 16-18, unless they are in a "sincere romantic relationship", usually determined by parental consent. For example, the effective age of consent in Tokyo by local statute is 18. The age of marriage is 16 for girls and 18 for boys with parental permission, and 20 otherwise |
Sounds like only some of the very rural areas actually utilize the 13 year old age of consent. No great, but a little better than I initially assumed. ChickenStu was correct about Venezuela being 16, but most of the countries around it like Brazil, Columbia and Peru the age is only 14. Not that it matters because this took place in Florida where the age is 18. |

So he's a despicable pedophile in the US but an accepted member of society in Brazil, Columbia and Peru.

If only he'd taken her to Nigeria (11) he would have been ok.
https://www.ageofconsent.net/world
Quote: | What is the Nigeria Age of Consent?
The Age of Consent in Nigeria is 11 years old. The age of consent is the minimum age at which an individual is considered legally old enough to consent to participation in sexual activity. Individuals aged 10 or younger in Nigeria are not legally able to consent to sexual activity, and such activity may result in prosecution for statutory rape or the equivalent local law.
Nigeria statutory rape law is violated when an individual has consensual sexual contact with a person under age 11. |
