DeNiro's performance was the backbone of the The Irishman as far as I'm concerned.
I thought the beautifully restrained performance by Pesci centered that movie. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel
Perfect double bill: Steamboat Bill, Jr. and Police Story. I miss great physical comedians like Keaton and young Jackie.
Leo DiCaprio may have given the best slapstick comedy performance of the last decade in Wolf of Wall Street. I'm struggling to think of better, but there doesn't seem to be much competition.
Jason Statham should team up with the John Wick guys and do something like Spy but with actual action direction and stunts to go with the gags.
Maggie Cheung's hotness quintuples between Police Story and Police Story 2. Might pivot to just watching Maggie Cheung in everything - gotta track down a lot of late-80s Hong Kong romcoms along with this beauty:
I love the Police Story series. One of the best action franchises imo. Hong Kong quietly produced some of the top action films from the 80s and 90s.
Director Denny Tedesco scored with his 2008 film “The Wrecking Crew,” his critically praised documentary on the legendary session musicians of the ‘60s who performed with everyone from the Beach Boys and Phil Spector to Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley — so it makes perfect sense that he’s begun work on a film about legendary 1970s session musicians called “Immediate Family.”
This crew, which backed Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon and countless others, includes guitarists Danny Kortchmar and Waddy Wachtel, bassist Leland Sklar, drummer Russ Kunkel and others.
I'm looking forward to this. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Thanks. I too will be looking for this. I have The Wrecking Crew saved, and watch it periodically. Fascinating documentary.

As I'm watching the wonderful, wholesome Abel Ferrara flick Ms. .45, I'm reminded of Japanese schlock master Takashi Ishii's masterpiece Freeze Me (2000) undoubtedly influenced by Ferrara's earlier film.
Which led me down a rabbit hole to a mashup video of Ishii and Carpenter Brut that is extremely my (bleep): Vimeo*

It's ridiculous how good that car chase down the shanty town hill and climactic mall fight sequence are, right?
I haven't seen all of 2 or any of 3 yet, but looking forward to watching them this month.
Most of my HK action background is seeing Woo's The Killer and Hardboiled back in the 90s as a kid - both great! - so any recommendations are welcome. _________________ Under New Management

If The Joker Guy has 11 Oscar nominations, then Ms. .45 deserves 15 retroactive Oscar nominations. _________________ Under New Management

Decided to watch The Wrecking Crew again last night since I hadn't seen it in several years. Such a cool doc and story. You think of so many of those hits from that period as just being iconic popular music, and it was nice to be reminded how much craftsmanship and skill there was in that music. And how many totally classic riffs came out of that small collection of musicians is amazing. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Pain and Glory was great. Banderas with a beautiful performance.
Where'd you see it?
AMC of all places (Rolling Hills theater in Torrance). There were only 8 people in the entire theater. I think the Landmark is playing it next week.
Sadly I haven't been a Californian for several years now and it doesn't look like it'll be showing back up at my local art theater which tends to only recycle small Best Picture nominees (a third Parasite viewing...?). I'm happy you enjoyed it - Almodovar is an underrated king and Banderas' best performances have come out of their collaboration. _________________ Under New Management
First the Murdoch family flogged the good name of Fox for over two decades and now Disney has killed it: 20th Century Fox becones 20th Century. _________________ Under New Management

Jojo Rabbit was just wonderful. _________________ "The best there is. The best there was. The best there ever will be.", said Bret Hart regarding the Los Angeles Lakers.
It's David Lynch's birthday and he's celebrated by dropping a new short film on Netflix titled "What Did Jack Do?"
Watched it instead of the 4th quarter and had much more fun. It's a light, absurdist B&W neo-noir in which Lynch interrogates a talking monkey about the murder of a chicken. Apparently completed in 2017 and shown once at a French film festival, it looks like it's a Netflix property now which could be a sign of a future full-length Lynch film on Netflix. _________________ Under New Management
I was today years old when I learned that Elina Löwensohn who stole the show in Let the Corpses Tan (2017) was also in Hal Hartley's Simple Men (1992), which I haven't seen in over 20 years.
Anyway, for no reason at all except there's an upcoming Hal Hartley retrospective at the Metrograph, here's one of the most iconic moments of American indie cinema starring Löwensohn in Hartley's Simple Men: https://twitter.com/charles_kinbote/status/1219760783376207873 _________________ Under New Management

I saw Casablanca for the first time (completely) last night at Alamo Drafthouse. What a terrific movie. It was one of those that I'd always seen bits and pieces here and there but was hoping I could get a theater experience and man, it was worth the wait. Excellent film.

Hell yeah! It really deserves it's place in the pantheon of great movies and Michael Curtiz is one of the more underrated, gifted studio grunts in Hollywood history. _________________ Under New Management
