No disrespect intended but this is a selective argument Quote: | GM has the Vette. Ford has the Stang. Porsche is synomous with 911. Ferrari has its V12 | You're talking car models until you get to Ferrari, then talk engine layout. If we seperate technology from models, then you could say the Japanese are on equal footing with Ferrari's reputation for speed with their reputation for quality. Another point, some of the iconic status of both the Vette and Mustang come from their continuous production since inception. Where as cars such as the Z (in it's various incarnations) ceased when economic conditions made it impossible to keep the model "pure". Whereas both the Vette & Mustang lines have numerously been compromised with either terribly antiquated chassis or underpowered engines or both (Mustang II anyone?). Their vehicle history's have been sullied by GM & Ford Just trying to make a few bucks of the brand.
Now, as 999, and others have mentioned above the Japanese do have their share of icons. The Skyline GTR is certainly an Icon worldwide. Think about it this way. The Skyline has never been sold in the U.S. but will be a powerful enough brand to launch a new high end niche model in the USA on. Also mentioned was the Mazda Miata which is the best selling roadster in all of auto history. That is also an icon along with the Honda CVCC/Civic, NSX, and the aforementioned Toyota Landcruiser, and Camry.
As a car nut, you gotta give the Japanese their due when it comes to Icons. |
