question about satellite cable

Sorry if this sounds stupid but I moved into a house that has a dish on the roof not sure if it is direct TV or Dish Network but my question is does it matter who the dish belongs to when ordering one of these services?

No the dish doesn't matter. You just need to get it aimed at the the right satellite (directv, dish network) and get a box.
