How can the Hawks give Phoenix such a valuable pick for Joe Johnson when he was a free agent? Is this pick protected?
This is going to make Phoenix bigger and younger for years to come.
This is why Colangelo is Colangelo and Mitch is Mitch. |

Protected through #3 this year. Unprotected next year. They thought Johnson was going to put them over the top into the playoffs and so the pick would not be important-whoops.
Also, they should have just made the max offer and forced PHX to eat the contract which they were not going to do.
So, no Oden/Durant/B.Wright. BUT, if ATL stays at the 3rd worst record they have a 47% chance of a top 3 pick and a 53% chance of a lower pick likely the #4/5. A coin flip. |

Can someone explain this...is Atlanta top 3 protected before or after the lottery? for instance, if atlanta finishes with the 3rd worst but picks 4th because of the lottery, does phoenix get the pick? |

after the lottery. before the lottery doesn't count for anything other than the lottery odds. |

pick is top 3 protected, and johnson was restricted.
the suns had a real problem matching the max deal he got, but if the choice was losing him for nothing - they might have done that and looked to trade him (or marion) later.
the hawks got a great player. i dont think they're idiots at all.
(ok, lets ignore speedy claxton's contract...) |

Hopefully they will trade the pick, didnt they trade out of the first round last season? If they did, thats funny, because they could have had either marcus williams of rajon rondo, either of which could and would have solved their current back up point guard role and would have been the future PG because of steve nash and his age. I dont think they will be that stupid this year however _________________ "99% of the players in the NBA would immediately have surgery to repair a torn ligament in their small finger, but

The real STUPIDITY is they are sitting at the 4th worst record. They can't even tank properly. |

Just a passing thought, what if Atlanta lands the top pick? I'm not just saying getting Oden, but what if Conley is there at 12 when they pick again? If they need to, give up a youngster or a future pick to move up to secure him, but think about that young roster with 2 college studs that have played together since high school...
Conley/Claxton/Lue
Johnson/Stoudamire
Smith/Childress
M.Williams/S.Williams
Oden/Pachulia/Wright
I don't think we'd have to think about the Phoenix pick in 08, this would win them the division on sheer talent alone. |

Phoenix is in salary cap hell right now. As much as they'd like to have the talent from a #4 pick, I'm not sure they want to absorb the guaranteed ~$6 million. I'm guessing ownership is probably crossing their fingers, hoping Atlanta gets one of the top 3 picks. _________________ Game recognize game, Granddad. - Riley Freeman, The Boondocks |
