Towards the end of the deal it could look terrible, but $14MM a year for the last 3-4 years of it, when we'll be in the 2030's, might look like chump change. A team like the Dodgers can carry that on their payroll without it killing them.
This also clears the path to trade not only Cartaya, but also Rushing, potentially. Smith is going to be catching for another 4-5 years, at least. |
Friedman confirmed it on an interview on the radio. He said it’s for CBT purposes. They don’t expect Smith to play 10 yrs. He’ll play for as long as he can but they just have to manage their payroll for CBT purposes.
I’m surprised he was so upfront about it.
They also asked him about what are they going to do with all their great catching prospects. He said it’s a good problem to have:
Quote: | 1) You always need depth at that position since no one catches 150 games anymore
2) Great trade pieces to fill other spots on the team
3) I think he mentioned a position change if possible for some, but I forget |

I guess when everyone knows it, and it's not illegal to do, why not say it? Haha. |

@Feinsand
Breakdown of Will Smith’s 10-yr, $140M extension, per source:
$30M signing bonus
2024: $13.55M
2025: $13M
2026: $13M
2027: $13M
2028: $9.5M
2029: $9.5M
2030: $9.5M
2031: $9.5M
2032: $9.5M
2033: $9.95M
The deferrals -- $5M per season -- will be paid out annually between 2034-43.
|
Looks like Will Smith is going with the 10 yr deferral program like Ohtani did.
This means he’s moving to a tax free state in 10 yrs.
So he gets a $30M signing bonus while deferring $50M of his $140M contract.
So he’s deferring 36%.
Here’s my math breakdown on his CBT number:
Quote: | Ohtani deferred $680M which I think had a present value of $417M or so. So 61%.
If applied to Will Smith, his $50M would have a present value of $31M.
That would explain the $30M signing bonus.
So, $31M + $90M = $121M present value.
So my guess is his CBT number is $12.1M per yr. |
Yup, Spotrac lists it at: $12,241,285

Glasnow was good today. Not great. I give him a 7/10 and maybe I’m being too hard on him but his 7/10 is 1 ER in 6IP |

It's good to have power stuff! Also, the Cardinals lineup is pretty pedestrian now. Glasnow is going to be very good, possibly elite if he doesn't walk too many. We all know what the potential hiccup is, and that's health.
And Miller could be similar if he can get more swing-and-miss with his breaking stuff. |

I’ve had this feeling that Jason Heyward is going to revert back to his bad self this year. |

Absolutely possible. But I like that we brought him back because, if nothing else, Freddie seems to love having him on the squad. If he falters enough, perhaps Pages can take his spot by June. And if we don't think Pages (or Vargas, I guess) is ready, there's always the trade market before the deadline.
Also, in looking at the Brewers rotation behind Peralta, I wouldn't be surprised if Adames is wearing Dodger blue by July. |

For an extra $10 a month on my Spectrum bill I get to watch Dodgers via Spectrum/MLB collaboration. I simply had to add mobile service ($0 cost) to my plan. I simply added the new Spectrum Number as a secondary carrier on my iPhone. I also got an upper on my Internet to 1Gig for $0. The Promo lasts a year. |

The Dodgers signed Drew Pomeranz to a minor league deal. He had been released from Angels camp within the past week. Not a bad flier to serve as organizational depth, if we can somehow get him right. |

Bobby Miller gets the start over Yamamoto.
Rojas starting over Lux.
Kike over Outman in CF
Taylor over Heyward.
Looks like we have 3 platoon players this yr. |

Roberts has said that Lux won't be used in a strict platoon. I know we promised Kike he would always start against lefties. You figure that Heyward will never start against lefties. I think Lux and Outman could at times. |

Guy is going to feast in this lineup and hitting at Dodger Stadium instead of the Mariners park. |

Arizona picking up where they left off in the playoffs, just mashing.
Juan Soto: 3/4 today. He's going to love being away from Petco Park as well. |

There is absolutely 0 reason for Muncy to be batting ahead of Teoscar vs lefties. And this has nothing to do with the 2 home runs. I don’t care about the imbalance when the BP comes in later on.
Bobby with a great finish. |

He was a beast for San Diego a few years ago. Looks like the type of reclamation project we're always game for. |

I think he had his best stretch last season in the bullpen. Problem is, he shouldn't be used as a multi-inning reliever just because he has starting experience. He throws hard and I think for one inning bursts, he may be useful. Asking for more than 1 inning at a time with him, though, might be asking for trouble. |

Interesting, on the Apple telecast just a couple of minutes ago before the final out, Dontrelle Willis said that Buehler touched 97 in his latest sim game. If so, this would be a highly, highly encouraging development. He's making his first rehab start on Sunday at AAA Oklahoma City. He's apparently expected to make about 4 starts in the minors before a late April return to the majors, if all goes well.
Fingers crossed, folks. |
