i think Blair Witch is very well done. the shaky camera is precisely one of the main reasons why the film is effective. i remember being very scared and impacted by that film watching it in the theater. of course it has no repeat value...but it's not intended to. |
At first it sounded like a cool concept and was effective, but it got real annoying when I started feeling like puking than watching. Of course, it probably didn't help that my friend insisted we watch it near the front of the theater. |
yeah i can see why being at the front of the theater would be a little queasy.
i don't really get motion sickness. i remember seeing Cloverfield and they were handing out barf bags as we walked in but thought it was no big deal. Same with Blair Witch. Still...a movie that effective made with such a low budget is remarkable. It was quite a hit. Made $140M and cost only $60,000. Scared me like few films have. |
It was way over rated none the less. I watched it on dvd one Halloween (having never seen it in the theater) and was like what's the big deal with this? Honestly, that is the winner. |

I thought Iron Man was actually a really good movie. Wouldn't look at it as over rated by any means.
I agree with everyone who said Crash though. |

I can do without the final 20 minutes of Pinapple Express. The rest was pretty funny, lagged in a few places... |

I haven't. I'm just wondering, because as a stand-alone (have not read the books) film, it is the most epic thriller up till this point in time. |
No, I haven't read the books.
I just did not like the movies.

Can't get any better than that description. I guess it depends on how old you are, which decade you were born in. |

I never understood all the hype about Saving Private Ryan.
Blade Runner is not so much overrated as it is dated. I never saw it when it came out since I wasn't yet born. I saw it for the first time in 90s, and it looked good. These days, it just looks dated.
Gone with the Wind is overrated today but back in 1939 when it was released? |
Had a great, great grand mother who lived to be 104. Lived by herself until she was 103. She died in the 90's. The only movie she ever saw at a theatre was GWTW. |

GWTW is a lot like Babe Ruth. Sure, he couldn't dominate like that now, but he did then, and reamins a timeless icon.
As for Saving Private Ryan, aside from whether or not you like the angle about the last surviving son, it's wonderfully done on so many levels. Whether its the realism of combat, the camaraderie, the timeless issue of men dying for f'd up missions, the humanity/inhumanity on both sides of a war, the tension of honor, courage and love vs. fear, self-preservation and hatred, among many other things, the movie touched combat veterans especially. It had a lot to say, and did it well. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. I agree with you assessment of GWTW. it will be an iconic film as long as our culture survives.
I have very mixed feelings about SPR. The opening scene was so shocking and seemingly realistic that I was stunned. And I do remember seeing how Vets who had been there reacted to it. But I don't get the same feeling for the film post D-Day. Spielberg is just such a fundamentally dishonest filmmaker that I can barely stand to watch any of his films anymore. |

re: matrix. you just had to be part of it when the movie came out i think. my girlfriend thought the movie was rather trite the first time she saw it. i, on the other hand, was glued to the tv screen. alot of that stuff was stuff that i saw for only the first time - the bullet scene, the super fast hands, the lobby shootout with the slomo flips. i remember thinking that all action movies should look like this after leaving the movie theater. the good thing about the movie was that there was a story outside of the action - simulated reality movies are always fun. _________________ -Most people learn by saying mother, numb, horse, angry... Reppin has obviously never had the town recluse befriend him with tree hole trinkets.
Juno was terrible. Contrived gahbage, full to the gills with unfunny zingers. I about turned it off when one of the kids said, "Phuket, Thailand!" instead of "F". The screenwriter must've done work for Scrubs before that. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

Apocalypse Now (pretentious)
Cleopatra (over-hyped and over-budgeted; so bad it forced 20th Century Fox to sell Century City)
Forrest Gump (did not deserve the mindless accolades)
Reality Bites (hated Winona Ryder's whiney ass acting ever since)
Blair Witch (not worth the hype)
Godfather III (like opening a box from Tiffany and finding a turd) |
