CNNSI - Indiana Pacers forward Jonathan Bender retired Saturday after he was unable to recover from a series of knee injuries.
"Due to a medical condition in my knees, I will not be able to continue playing basketball," Bender, 25, said in a statement through the team. "The Pacers gave me the chance to play with, and against, the best players in the world."
Toronto made Bender the fifth pick in the 1999 draft, then traded him to Indiana before the season started. He played seven seasons with the Pacers, but never in every game. His best season was in 2001-2002, when he averaged 7.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. [READ] |

No it looks like the Pacers made the wrong decision. They decided to keep Bender. |

Any player who plays less than 82 games in four seasons combined will be avoided like the plague. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. You're giving Mitch too much credit. |

Now that Bender has retired the Pacers can file the insurance claim- they will get 80% of next years salary paid by the insurance company saving 6.4 million dollars.
Also they can now file for an exemption to sign a player for 1/2 Bender's salary because he played fewer than 10 games in 2 straight seasons due to injury. Currently the Pacers only have 10 healthy bodies. |
