Quote: | Bulls not interested in trading for Andrew Bynum
Rumors of dealing Deng to dump salary unfounded, sources say
December 31, 2013|By K.C. Johnson, Chicago Tribune reporter
Last season, at least two teams inquired about absorbing Richard Hamilton into their salary-cap space near the trade deadline, but both also asked for a first-round pick to take the veteran guard off the Bulls' books.
The salary dump could have dropped the Bulls below last season's luxury tax threshold. But sources indicated at the time the Bulls refused to entertain those offers, with Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf signing off on the tax payment to keep the first-round pick.
That example should quell any lingering whispers of the Bulls trading Luol Deng for Andrew Bynum, whom the Cavaliers are shopping after suspending him for conduct detrimental to the team. The second half of Bynum's $12.25 million salary can be waived before Jan. 7.
That means, if the Bulls were to trade Deng for Bynum and waive him, they could save roughly $20 million in salary and tax payments. That isn't happening, according to sources.
As previously reported, the Bulls hope to re-sign Deng this summer in free agency. Also as previously reported, though the Bulls aren't seeking to trade Deng, if a team offered a rotation player and first-round pick in advance of February's trade deadline, they would consider such an offer. |

Quote: | Pau Gasol trade rumors: Report indicates Gasol-Bynum deal could be off
Pau Gasol's future with the Los Angeles Lakers is up in the air once again, as multiple reports indicate different outcomes for the future of the veteran center.
Previously, ESPNLosAngeles.com outlined a scenario in which Gasol would be traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for disgruntled big man Andrew Bynum, a former Laker teammate of Gasol's.
In this situation, Gasol and his large contract would go to Cleveland, a team intent to put together a playoff team, and Bynum would go to Los Angeles, who would immediately waive him for salary cap space. |

Newly acquired Marshall assumes control of Lakers offense

As the Lakers try to right the ship, it is Kendall Marshall who is at the controls.
Kendall Marshall admits he's been through worse on the basketball floor. The 2013-14 season looks bleak for the Lakers as the injuries have mounted, leading to the team welcoming 2014 as owners of a six-game losing streak.
Marshall, the 13th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, was a part of a Phoenix Suns team that won just 25 games last season. After being traded to the Wizards and then being waived, he found himself in the D-League as a member of the Delaware 87ers.
Now, as the Lakers try to right the ship, it is Marshall who is at the controls.
With Wednesday's news that Jordan Farmar will miss a minimum of four weeks with his second hamstring tear of the season, Marshall is the only healthy point guard on the Lakers roster.
Just six days after returning from a three and a half week absence due to a hamstring tear, Farmar suffered another tear in his left hamstring in Tuesday night's home loss to Milwaukee.
An ultrasound revealed the tear early Wednesday. Although it is in the same leg as his last injury the tear is in a different place, the team announced.

The gamble the playoff-hopeful Cleveland Cavaliers took on Andrew Bynum was a bust. Though he showed flashes of his old self this season, he has begrudgingly admitted that he might never be the same player again and his detrimental conduct only compounds his falling worth. Following the 76ers’ footsteps, the Cavs are said to be eager to part ways with the towering heap of trouble, with the latest trade rumor putting Bynum back in a Laker jersey in exchange for Pau Gasol and other assets.
The modern-era Lakers are known for their head-scratching management decisions but they’re not actually interested in giving the big guy another go. So keep the tears in check. This would strictly be a salary dump for them.
You’d only have to look at their history with the disgruntled and disjointed center to know the organization has no plans to give Bynum court time. They know all too well about Bynum’s lack of professionalism. Whether he was swatting point guard-sized gnats out of the air or exhibiting a lack of commitment to the game of basketball, the Lakers organization were willing to give up on his upside in exchange for rights to Dwight Howard and his own diva complex knowing that Bynum brings too much baggage with him. In short, Buss and Co. are not on a suicide mission. |
