|

It seems like it's a few sleepers in every year's draft, but I usually never paid much attention to the ones who were before they were drafted, so I never heard the reports about them.
What can you remember people saying about these players (and more that you add) that made their stock slip so low, even if they weren't exactly sleepers?
-Josh Howard
-Dwayne Wade (Yeah he was #5, but he was still slept on hard)
-Nick Van Exel (#37)
-Gilbert Arenas (#31)
-Manu Ginobili
-Tony Parker
-Smush Parker (undrafted)
-Byron Russel (#45)
-Voshon Leonard (#46)
-Andrei Kirilenko (#24)
-Michael Redd (#43)
-Bobby Simmons (#42)
-Carlos Boozer (#35)
-Kyle Korver (#51) - I would assume because they saw him as a shooter only |

Josh Howard - Undersized at SF, not enough ball-handling for SG. Lacks 3pt. range.
NVE - SG in a PG body.
Arenas - SG in a PG body
Ginobili - unknown because scouting wasn't as developed by most teams.
Parker - unknown because he was a 19 yr old PG. Spurs used some special statistical formula derived from his gameplay before drafting him.
Smush - SG in a PG body. Not enough ball-handling or consistent range. Average passer.
Bryon Russell - Self-made player out of Long Beach St. Developed jumpshot and played D.
Lenard - not atheltic enough for SG. Too short for SG. No PG skills
Kirilenko - Too skinny. Undefined offensive skills.
Redd - Self-made shooter out of Ohio St.
Bobby Simmons - Sought out by MJ. Felt he had some talent. NBA size and athelticism Self-made in the NBA
Boozer - Undersized at PF. Not explosive
Kyle Korver - Lacked strength. Questionable defense. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

Kobe would be a sleeper, and with Wade he was taken where he was supposed to pretty much, the only thing about him is some said he could go as high as four to as low as twenty seven...
Cavs- Lebron... they still do it
Pistons- Darko.... if they could do it again Anthony or Wade
Nuggets- Melo.... I think they still do it
Raptors- Bosh.... they needed him, they still do it
Heat- Wade.... best place |

Nothing was being said about Andrei Kirilenko. I can't even recall his name on any draft projection. It was a surprise pick, and most Jazz fans felt he was a bust as he stayed in Europe for an additional season... which was interpretted as the Jazz front office sacrificing the remaining championship window of the Stockton & Malone tandem.
What I do remember was a major (bleep) on the ESPN Jazz board, where the fans felt betrayed by Scott Layden... first he picked Kirilenko, and then he left for the Knicks. One lone Eastern European poster kept posting that this Kirilenko guy was a total athletic stud with incredible skills, as he had watched him on television repeatedly. Nobody really believed him.

Josh Howard also had that drunk-in-public charge or something like that, iirc.
And don't forget Tayshaun "too skinny for the L" Prince. |

Prince was dismissed by almost everyone on this board, as he was considered way too skinny, too weak and didn't have much of a first step.
Qyntel Woods on the other hand was the second coming of TMac. |

Hmmm....looking at those that Mike answered....seems like Shannon Brown and Dee Brown might be a good gamble. |

Thing is, the players that made it... above average to condor wingspans. Shannon Brown yes. Dee Brown question-mark. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

Totally. I was actually praying for TayTay , but I tend to be biased toward local talent--and nothing pisses me off more than seeing those guys get past Mitch and then go on to kill it elsewhere (eg Prince, Arenas, B Diddy, etc.). |
