This just might pique some interest.
http://www.rollingstone.com/tv/lists/100-greatest-tv-shows-of-all-time-w439520
I disagree more often than agree, as it seems my musical tastes are a better match to those of Rolling Stone's, but that is perfectly OK. I'm just not much of a fan of almost all network TV production, writing, acting, and content.
I do believe one of our Mods, for obvious reasons, will like at least one of the very high rankings--as will many others as from previous discussions.
How many are going to look to see just where this particular show ranked, or Breaking Bad, or I Love Lucy, or their personal favorites. Fun stuff. _________________ "A metronome keeps time by using a Ringo" |

The Top 5 is about right with me, although I'd change the order a bit. Freaks and Geeks even appearing in the top 50 is laughable, let alone #11. |

As you can tell I'm a pretty big fan of Mad Men, but its decline in quality starting around season 4 should have knocked it down several pegs. |

Also mishmashing all these different genres is pretty ridiculous. 24 sixteen slots behind the Shield? Come on... |

They have been for a very long time.
Their top 100 lists are terrible even for their normally low standards. |

Season 5 was quality the last 5 episodes. Season 6 wasnt very good, but Season 7 was definitely up there with 4 and 2, imo.
But that could be said with the Wire, season 5, Sopranos Season 5 and parts of 6, early episodes of Seinfeld. ... |

The top 10 is solid, except for the Soprano which I didn't watch. I would have had MASH in the top 10. I don't want to look again but was the Andy Griffith Show in the top 100? _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

It's an interesting list, I suppose, but it seems far too weighted to recent programming. |

Did anybody else find Six Feet Under horribly overrated? |

Sopranos deserves that spot. I know it's daunting at 86 episodes, but if you go thru it, I highly doubt that you'd consider it a waste of your time, even though I think Season 1 is a little gimmicky at times. The show in total meets the hype, though. Most lists like this have it at 1. Some have The Wire ahead of it, but even at that, that's a good indication of the Sopz ranking in the top 1-3 being pretty much fixed. It began the high-concept, very-adult style of HBO/AMC show that followed it. Tony is the most developed character in telly history, imo. He conveyed it all, too. It's not all angry/sociopathic/mob stuff, he was practically a real person with all emotions explored.
When FBI agents tell Uncle Junior which mobsters they want him to finger, he says with a shrug, "I want to (bleep) Angie Dickinson – let's see who gets lucky first."
I saw that movie of hers from 80 called Dressed To Kill. It had a controversial (for the time) Donald Trump style shower scene and yet all it conveys now are thoughts of Uncle Jun'. One of the writers said Angie wrote to thank them for making her Junior's template for a sexy woman. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

Married With Children not being on the list is a crime. So is South Park at 33. |

Very surprised that Married With Children isn't on the list, although I was happy that they included The Golden Girls, which is a great show and was always funny. Freaks And Geeks at #11 is just stupid, and Late Night With David Letterman at #13? First off, that's obviously way too high, and second, it has no business being ahead of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show (hell, even Letterman would be the first to tell you that). I also thought that NYPD Blue was too low on the list, but it comfortably made it, at least. |

My #1 is Breaking Bad. It's the greatest show I've ever seen.
True Detective was on its way to be the greatest show ever, and then that 2nd season happened. _________________ ¡Hala Madrid! |

What surprised me the most was that I Love Lucy was ranked so high. Though it has never been on my list, the fact that these shows are still being run, that it has sustained a popularity for generations, that it was the most popular show of its time, seems it should be in the top five.
For many of the same reasons, The Andy Griffith Show, still watched on re-runs, which I think was a better show, was not even on the list.
And to end this black and white segment, one of the finest comedies of all the, The Dick Van Dyke Show, was way too underappreciated by Rolling Stone. _________________ "A metronome keeps time by using a Ringo" |
