Van Peebles' masterwork Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song is essential to independent filmmaking, Black cinema, and American counter culture. Few American filmmakers could combine radical cinema, revolutionary politics, and gonzo fun like MVP, and none did so with so much cool.
Happy he got to see his career work receive a (better late than never) Criterion Collection release before his passing. May he rest in peace.

I rewatched Sweet Sweetback Badass song today. The first viewing I felt nothing. This time I was disturbed. I watched it through educated lenses. I've grown. Some will probably get angry, animals get mad. RIP Melvin.
