Good stuff, LBP.
I still have to think we have a move or two coming. It would make no sense whatsoever to reduce payroll significantly but to still barely exceed the CBT. It feels like we're going to make another move to shed some payroll, or we're going to make a significant trade where we add a lot of payroll while we give up prospects and/or established big leaguers. |

Quote: | Padres Appear 'All In' For Shohei Ohtani Next Season
Unless the Los Angeles Angels sign him to a contract extension, Shohei Ohtani will be the most anticipated free agent of next offseason.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have long been linked to Ohtani, but according to a report the Padres are the "stiffest competition" for the two-way star and are planning to be "all in." |
Makes no sense. Where are they getting all this money from? How'd they jump from small market to big market?
Something's gotta give. They can't sign Ohtani, Machado, and Soto right?
How many ~$300M contracts can they carry? Right now they have 3:
Machado, Bogaerts, Tatis
Are they going to get rid of Machado and Soto and go with:
Ohtani, Bogaerts, Tatis? |

I didn't realize this about Gavin Stone:
Quote: | Dodgers pitching prospect Gavin Stone has shot up L.A.'s prospect rankings since being drafted with the 159th pick in the 2020 draft (which only had 160 picks). |
What a find. The 2nd to last draft pick in the entire 2020 draft and he's shooting up the prospect list.
Quote: | SportsNetLA analyst and former Dodger Jerry Hairston Jr. saw Stone in action recently, and he came away as impressed as everyone else who has seen him.
"Gotta chance to see Gavin Stone throw a bullpen last week. Can see how guys have a tough time squaring him up. Extremely Impressive"
|
Quote: | Stone's changeup is his calling card, a pitch MLB Pipeline rates as a 70 on the 20-80 scouting scale and have listed as as one of the best among all right-handed pitching prospects. BP was also very high on Stone's change:
"His changeup might flat out be the best in the minors. It tunnels well off the fastball with big sink and run, and when it isn’t missing bats—which is a lot of the time—it induces weak ground ball contact."
https://www.si.com/mlb/dodgers/news/dodgers-analyst-impressed-by-gavin-stone-la-pitching-prospect-js77 |
Yeah, I thought Pepiot had the best changeup in the organization. Didn't know Stone had a filthy one as well. New top 100 lists should be coming out soon. I expect Stone to shoot up those lists. |

Quote: | Scott Boras On Carlos Correa Saga: I Don't Understand The Mets
In the wake of Carlos Correa's free agency saga, Scott Boras expressed frustration with the New York Mets.
Correa originally agreed to a 13-year, $350 million deal with the San Francisco Giants, but the deal collapsed after the club consulted with orthopedic specialist Dr. Robert Anderson.
The shortshop then reached a 12-year, $315 million pact with the Mets. Correa underwent a physical, and two days later, the Mets balked too. The club also consulted with Dr. Anderson, who advised against the long-term deal.
"I don't understand the Mets," Boras said. "I gave them all of the information. We had them talk to four doctors. They knew the issue the Giants had. And yet, they still call the same doctor the Giants used for his opinion. There was no new information. So why negotiate a contract if you were going to rely on the same doctor?
"It was different with the Giants because a doctor had an opinion they didn't know about. But the Mets had notice of this. They knew the opinion of the Giants. So why did you negotiate when you know this thing in advance?"
The Mets tried to renegotiate Correa's contract, but Boras ultimately negotiated a six-year, $200 million deal for his client to return to the Minnesota Twins. |
Boras has a point. |

The current owner/chairman, Peter Seidler, is a two-time cancer survivor and has apparently made it his mission (since taking over in 2020) to do whatever he can to bring a championship to San Diego, as well as doing other things for the city like working on homelessness. By all accounts he's a good person and exactly what you want from an owner as a fan. I expect the Padres to spend, spend, spent well beyond their status as a small-market team for as long as he's running them.
Interesting fact, he's also the nephew of Peter O'Malley.
These small market teams make tons of money. Most are just too cheap/greedy to spend it; San Diego is not. |

I hope I am wrong, but the Dodgers seem like they will be tanking next season, just like the Lakers & Rams did after winning championships... _________________ “Always remember... Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools, and accepted by idiots.” |

Baseball America Top 100 list out.
Quote: | By Team:
Orioles (8)
Guardians (7)
Dodgers (6)
Mets (6)
Rays (6)
Diamondbacks (5)
Red Sox (5)
Yankees (5)
Cardinals (4)
Nationals (4)
Pirates (4)
Reds (4)
Rockies (4)
Cubs (3)
Mariners (3)
Rangers (3)
Twins (3)
Angels (2)
Astros (2)
Brewers (2)
Giants (2)
Marlins (2)
Padres (2)
Phillies (2)
White Sox (2)
Athletics (1)
Blue Jays (1)
Royals (1)
Tigers (1)
Braves (0) |
All that trading has finally caught up to the Braves.
Quote: | Top 10:
#1 - SS/3B Gunnar Henderson (Baltimore)
#2 - OF Corbin Carroll (Arizona)
#3 - OF Jackson Chourio (Milwaukee)
#4 - 3B Jordan Walker (St. Louis)
#5 - RHP Andrew Painter (Philadelphia)
#6 - Grayson Rodriguez (Orioles)
#7 - ?
#8 - Elly De La Cruz (Reds)
#9 - Francisco Alavarez (Mets)
#10 - ?
|
Quote: | Dodgers (last year in parentheses):
#18 - Diego Cartaya (23)
#21 - Bobby Miller (38)
#30 - Miguel Vargas (40)
#54 - Michael Busch (76)
#55 - Ryan Pepiot (99)
#56 - Gavin Stone (NR) |
- Looks like Baseball America might be higher on Pepiot than we are.
- Interesting to not see Pages up there.
- Stone is a fast riser, wowo.
- Miller is a fast riser as well. Knocking on the top 20 spot.
- surprised to see Vargas rise after that lackluster debut last year. Guess it's based on what he did during the entire season. Top 30 is very good. 3 top 30 guys is amazing.
Quote: | Guardians:
#19: Daniel Espino.
#20: Gavin Williams.
#68: Bo Naylor.
#72: George Valera.
#77: Brayan Rocchio.
#85: Logan Allen.
#86: Tanner Bibee. |
Quote: | Orioles:
#1 - Gunnar Henderson.
#6 - Grayson Rodriguez.
#15 - Jackson Holliday.
#41 - Colton Cowser.
#75 - DL Hall.
#76 - Jordan Westburg.
#93 - Connor Norby.
#95 - Joey Ortiz. |
- Orioles become first team with consecutive Baseball America No. 1 prospects from same draft class.
- Crazy how the Orioles got Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson with their first 2 picks in the 2019 draft.
- The Orioles are really shaping up to be the next Astros (tanking/sucking and then hitting on their high draft picks).
Quote: | Angels:
#42 - O'Hoppe
#53 - Neto |
Quote: | Mets:
#9 - Francisco Alavarez
#16 - Kodai Senga
#33 - Brett Baty
#50 - Kevin Parada
#92 - Alex Ramirez
#95 - Jett Williams
|
Looks like Mets are doing well, spending all that money while building up their farm system.
Quote: | Padres:
#22 - Jackson Merrill
#69 - Dylan Lesko
|
After seemingly trading away their entire farm last year, Padres are back with 2 top 100 prospects this year, plus they just signed the no. 1 international prospect for $5.6M.
Quote: | Rangers:
#26 - Evan Carter
#59 - Josh Jung
#66 - Owen White
|
It's good to look at the Rangers, since they seem to be our main competitors for Bryan Reynolds
Quote: | SF Giants:
#38 - Marco Luciano
#39 - Kyle Harrison
|
And it's interesting to take a look at the SF Giants and the job that Farhan Zaidi is doing stocking that farm system. Doesn't look like he's doing a good job up there. They've been hoarding prospects for awhile now and they still only have 2 top 100 prospects. Conversely, SD traded away so many prospects lately and they also have 2 in the top 100. |

Yup. If you look at our team, talent-wise, we might be a Bryan Reynolds away from not losing any talent from last year's team:
The Same:
RF - Betts
1B - Freeman
2B - Lux
C - Will Smith
Improvement:
3B - Muncy probably should be an improvement over last year
DH - Martinez probably an improvement over JT
LF - Chris Taylor should be an improvement over what we had last year, which was Chris Taylor and Gallo
Bench - probably an improvement over last year with Thompson, Busch, Vargas, Outman
SS-CF Combination:
Last year:
SS - Trea Turner - .809 ops and 4.9 WAR
CF - Bellinger - .654 OPS and 1.2 WAR
Total WAR - 6.1
This year:
CF - Bryan Reynolds - .807 ops and 3.0 WAR
SS - Miguel Rojas - .605 ops and 2.5 WAR
Total WAR - 5.5
Doesn't that come out to a wash?
So, most of our lineup should stay the same or is an improvement over last year. The only thing we haven't addressed is our CF-SS situation. We're going to take a hit by downgrading from Trea Turner to Miguel Rojas/Lux, no doubt about that. If we can upgrade in CF from Bellinger to Reynolds, it should be a wash.
I haven't broken down the pitching yet. This is just for the position players. |

With expanded playoffs, there’s less importance on winning 100+ games and the division. That isn’t to say what we saw this past season will be the norm, but teams should now better pace themselves over the long season and make it to October healthy and playing their best ball. All those wins during the summer don’t mean squat if your team fizzles out as the playoffs get started. Winning 110+ games is meaningless if it doesn’t result in a World Series victory. |

Muncy is high on Vargas:
Quote: | “Man that guy can hit. When I did my rehab assignment early on in the year, and I went down to OKC, I saw first hand what he was doing down there. And then he came up and I know his numbers weren’t necessarily the best but I’m very impressed with Miguel Vargas. I think one of the things I’m most impressed with is there’s so much hype and, kind of, hoopla surrounding Miguel Vargas and he hasn’t let any of that get to him." |
Quote: | "He was there early every day. He was there wanting to work every single day. He would be in the cage and he just wanted to watch people hit. And I was so impressed with that. For a guy that’s going to be as good as he is. He’s going to be a star in this game for sure. I think he can really, really hit." |

I like the move for Miami, as I'm not much of a Pablo Lopez guy, and Arraez still has 3 years of team control left (Lopez has only two). The Twins did get two prospects from the Marlins, though, including their #5 prospect, apparently.
The Dodgers have Chris Woodward back in the organization, it was announced today, as he was brought back as a special assistant in the front office. Too bad we can't have him get back out there as the third base coach. |

it’s a soft tank season. They did enough to make the playoffs but that’s it. They just don’t have enough pitching to win a ring. |

Dodgers have 7 prospects in MLB Pipeline’s latest top 100 ranking:
14. Diego Cartaya
24. Bobby Miller
37. Miguel Vargas
54. Michael Busch
56. Gavin Stone
70. Ryan Pepiot
81. Andy Pages
In looking at this, I really feel like it's time to either give Busch a shot at everyday playing time vs. righties, or trading him now. He's 25. You can't keep a top prospect for much longer and expect him to hold significant trade value. |

I do agree but I think it's a small step backwards. I still believe that the team can still contend for the WS title. We just won't get the 110 wins which I am more that happy with. |
